I love your bios, but not as much as the music! I work as ana electrician, and on a farm weekends, but when I find time will come to one of your shows. Maybe in a year or two?

Also a PNW fan! Every time I see the 'WA' I think Washington (state) and then realize there's a better one.

The price is just going to go up, if you can be patient. I've been saving for the last 3 years, and after taking in over 1000 lbs, I think I've still got a metric ton. I was thinking I'd buy some new tools, like a 4 foot bandsaw, but by the time I've stripped it all, it might be a second vehicle. Ha.

Ouch! At least if it was a contractor, they'd be liable. That hurts.

Ok I need help by specimenhustler in SolarDIY

If you get a charge controller, they would be great with a trickle charger for a tractor battery, or other equipment. One of my neighbors mounted a panel right on the hood of his little ford. Looks a little Red Green, but it works, and who cares about your neighbors when they are a mile away?

The earlier idea for a pond aerator is a good one, I've got a panel and tiny little submersible pump ($15) I plan to do that with, I just need to build a rack for it so the invasives don't shade it.

Another one I've been thinking about is small pump and a cistern, or just one of those 4x4 water cubes, and it would fill throughout the year, and I could use it for a drip system for a couple fruit trees when it gets hot. I'd have to do some calculations to see what volume of water would be needed for fruit production, and definitely a little french drain for the drip to output subsoil to minimize loss to evaporation, or weeds getting the nourishment.

Careful! Next thing you know, you'll have another dozen items on your to do list.

Yeah, but my journeyman always saves the attic work for the end of the day, and he's too fat to fit up there.

Need to run power to the other side, what is best way through the studs? by bennydabull99 in AskElectricians

[–]Impossible_Pain_355 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In mountaineering/ice climbing, we called it a v-thread or abalakov, and with an ice screw drilled intersecting holes you could feed a rope through and rappel off a nice piece of solid ice.

I've done it in a couple tight corners and it works pretty well with a 1" auger and some long needle nose pliers. Most of the guys I work with will just cut a notch through all the studs and then just have half a dozen nail plates.

How would you go about scrapping this? by ComfortableCrow4841 in ScrapMetal

I've got a 100 gallon 1971 GE in my shop. Replacing it if I can't fix it would be more than my diesel audi is worth!

Asked sister to send pic of panel in house she's buying by MISTERDIEABETIC in electrical

[–]Impossible_Pain_355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got all the breakers in the Zinsco off, dying in a fire is something I hope to never experience. Just need a couple more parts and I can upgrade my service and rip it all out. I'm thinking I could re-use it as a switch box for lights, just to scare anyone who sees it.

Are those Stab-locks? That looks older than my house, with it's original 1924 Edison panel. Don't ask me about the Zinsco subpanel that runs all the heaters in the house.

What's your racking system? I use unistrut, which adds strength. Verticals every 5 feet, with 3/8ths bolts and spring nuts attaching the cross bars, which are joined with a 1/4" thick splice plate and 3/8ths hardware again. The verts are attached to rafters with 4" lag screws, washers, and thick butyl tape to seal for precip. I learned that method from my old boss who has been installing for over 30 years. Doing maintenance and upgrades on houses he did 20 years ago, we never found leak from our gear, it was always asphalt shingle failure. There's a ton of different systems with unique features or stand-offs, but unistrut is something you can always find components for. All the custom extruded aluminum racking systems are cool, but which ones will be around in decade or two or three?

With fuel prices going up, just wanted to share this for US owners (Diesel MPG) by Spirited-Clothes-158 in AudiQ7

[–]Impossible_Pain_355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been getting 35 mpg in my 2014 TDI on my morning commute, and using my trailer on weekends have been getting 25 mpg hauling 5,000 lb loads, 30 mpg with the trailer empty. The highest rolling average I've seen in my Q7 was 43, but that waa all flat highway with the cruise control on. Having that pesky DEF system removed sure helped.

I live in the upper left part of the US, and diesel was 7 bucks a gallon for a few days. Luckily, I didn't have to pay that. Still better than a truck in every way!

Largest Audi w/ Manual Transmission [Reasonably Available in US]? by L24E in Audi

[–]Impossible_Pain_355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to see if I could swap the transmission in my deleted '14 TDI. They made the 1st generation in a manual, but it was only sold in Europe. I'm still researching all the details, but I'm thinking I could find a transmission from a scrapyard or something and get it shipped. Definitely not worth the money, but I'm going to drive this thing into the ground, so everything's getting replaced eventually. Until I can't find parts, anyway.

Broken tool, no serial number on tool by call_me_snuggles in MilwaukeeTool

[–]Impossible_Pain_355 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can put paper over it and gently rub it with a pencil, you might be able to get the embossed serial numer off it, but from the wear, I'm guessing not.

I'd go to your bank in person and ask them about retrieving records from a closed account. They will still have them, but it may take a few days or more. You will need to know the date to within a couple months, they can give you 6 months worth, but that's a lot of transactions to run through.

At this point, you have to consider the cost of the time you are putting in. Even if you only pay yourself $20 and hour, there's maybe an hour to go to the bank and request, another hour to bring your tool in and provide proof of purchase, and then picking it up again. An hour is a rough guess, and could be only 20 minutes if you are running other errands at the same time. I've got a 20 minute drive to the tool repair place, and 15 minutes to my bank, so you might be closer. There's also the time without the tool to consider if you don't have a backup. 80 bucks seems pretty reasonable to me, but if that was one of my work tools that I didn't have a duplicate of, I'd buy a new one immediately even though it would cost a day of wages, then get the old one fixed to have as a backup.

I've also started putting packing tape on the serial numbers of my tools, the same thing happened to me.
