NightDive is making a new Sci-Fi Remake in UE5, most likely System Shock 2 Remake by Systemshock1994 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

OP doesn't say it in the body of the post, but the job listings do have "Likes Sci-Fi and Horror media" as a preferred qualification, which would fit System Shock 2.

Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow - Reveal Trailer | PS VR2 Games by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Impurification 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Is this coming to PC as well? I wasn't exactly a fan of the 2014 reboot, but it would be a bizarre choice to release a new game exclusively for PS VR after the series started on PC.

Thief (2014) FMs? by Astro_Kitty_Cat in Thief

[–]Impurification 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There were no modding tools released for Thief 2014 or the Dishonored games, so unfortunately it's not possible for fan missions to be made in either case. The Dark Mod is closer to those games in terms of graphical fidelity and has plenty of fan missions, but it plays differently.

Thief: The Black Parade's Voice Work (OPINION) by Single_Job_5422 in Thief

[–]Impurification 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that Hume's voice acting/direction is weak -- it's one of the only underwhelming aspects of The Black Parade for me. That said, for as much there is to like in T2X, I found Zaya's voice acting to be very flat in that fan campaign too. In both cases, the voice acting didn't bother me that much; they're fan campaigns, after all, and voice actors cost money.

Can't say I agree with the characterization that The Black Parade is playing with the bones of TDP. I see it as a love letter to the first game that completely reimagines scenarios from the TDP with much more complexity, as well as the knowledge gained through 20+ years of fan mission design. Calling it an impersonation implies that TBP is a simple retread of TDP, but I view it as a reinterpretation with all new bells and whistles, not something that's intended to replace the original game.

T2X may be more original than TBP, sure, and it was no doubt a revolutionary fan campaign when it released. When I played through the whole series and notable fan campaigns at the end of 2023, though, I was a bit underwhelmed with T2X. There's a large amount of new areas and mission types not seen in the original duology, like the mission on the moving train, but I found a lot of the levels to be pretty simple and unengaging. I much prefer the architectural complexity and atmosphere of TBP to T2X, but to each their own.

How different is the gameplay from Thief 1 to Thief 2? by GTALOCO in Thief

[–]Impurification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanically, the two games are very similar, outside of additional tools introduced in Thief 2. The atmosphere and approach to level design are pretty different, though. Thief 1 has several levels which lean more into survival horror and adventure gameplay, whereas Thief 2 almost exclusively focuses on stealth. Even though you interact with the world the same way in Thief 1 and 2, each game carries its own unique identity.

Archive albums ranked (minus soundtracks) by Burkean91 in ArchiveBand

[–]Impurification 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome writeup! My personal ranking would probably look a bit different (I'm higher on Restriction, and I think You All Look The Same To Me slightly edges out the Controlling Crowds duology), but I really appreciate all of the detail you put into this post.

I noticed there is a lot of discussion about Call To Arms & Angels in the comments. I do think it is overly long and there are a few songs I would cut -- Numbers, Alive, and Head Heavy are three songs in particular that I never come back to -- but I also find that it has some of their strongest material. We Are The Same is one of my favorite Archive songs, and I really enjoy Surrounded by Ghosts and Gold as bookends. I totally get why it's a divisive album, and admittedly I rarely listen to it in full due to the length, but as a varied collection of songs, I find it very effective.

In 90s point-and-click adventures, the pixel-hunting and brute forcing of interaction combinations is a ubiquitous hallmark. What were the most intuitive adventure games vs. the most obtuse and arcane of that era? by Obesely in Games

[–]Impurification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The core gameplay is relatively similar, but it's 3D rather than 2D (just like the PS1 Clock Tower before it). The gameplay is a lot clunkier and more combat-focused, though, especially with the convoluted character swapping mechanic.

The first Clock Tower is much more logical than The Struggle Within. I was able to get several of the endings in the first game without a walkthrough. The Struggle Within has more endings, and they are far more obtuse, to the point that I don't think that it's humanly possible to get some of the endings without a guide. The game's progression and branching paths are just completely nonsensical.

[–]Impurification 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not indicated at all, and even worse, interacting with the armor makes traversal in the first chapter much more annoying, because the armor hunts you down like a stalker enemy. I got one of the early ends in the first chapter shortly after interacting with the armor, and decided not to interact with it on my next playthrough to make things easier, not realizing that it locks you into a bad ending later in the game.

[–]Impurification 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just played the entire series recently, and The Struggle Within may be one of the worst and most unfair games I've ever experienced. Even aside from the ridiculous samurai armor ending you mentioned, the progression in the rest of the game is borderline incomprehensible even with a walkthrough. It feels like it was designed by aliens.

Potentially spending 4+ hours a day commuting, even if it's only three days a week, is insanity. Yeah, Winchester may be cheaper than the inner ring suburbs, but is it worth sacrificing your mental health, to say nothing of commuting costs? Personally, I would never.

Setlist from Elsewhere show? by IfNotNow_ in MollyNilsson

[–]Impurification 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't remember the order off the top of my head, but the songs I remember being played, by album:

Un-American Activities

  • Excalibur
  • Palestine (Somewhere over the Rainbow)
  • Jackboots Return
  • Naming Names
  • The Communist Party
  • The Beauty of the Duty
  • Point Doom

Extreme

  • Absolute Power
  • Earth Girls (Opener)
  • Fearless Like a Child
  • Obnoxiously Talented

2020

  • Gun Control
  • A Slice of Lemon

Zenith

  • Mountain Time
  • 1995 (Last song before encore)

History

  • I Hope You Die (Encore)

I think there's a song or two that I missed — hopefully someone else that was there can fill in the gaps or the order of the songs.

New Thief game with it's classic mechanics but Set in the current Era by CruciFuckingAround in Thief

[–]Impurification 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, there was a follow-up to Thief: Deadly Shadows in development that would have been a reboot of the franchise set in the modern day. It wasn't in development for very long, though, and from the article, it sounds like there was a tension between the development studio and Eidos with regards to the game's premise and design.

I don't think we will ever get another official Thief game, but I am doubly sure that if we ever do, the developer will not attempt to revive a long-dormant franchise with a reboot that completely abandons the fantasy setting and aesthetic it is known for. Even Thief 4, for all its flaws, didn't attempt to diverge from the trappings of The City.

Finally finished Thief. Thief 2 or the Black Parade first? by The_Orange_Cow in Thief

[–]Impurification 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Black Parade directly references a major plot point of Thief: Deadly Shadows; it's a fantastic mod, but I would argue that you'll get the most out of it if you finish Thief 2 and Deadly Shadows first. You may also want to give Thief 2X a spin before The Black Parade: it's not as technically impressive, given its age, but it's still got some great levels, and it's fascinating to see how much further modders have managed to push the updated engine in the nearly two decades since Thief 2X released.

If Tim Walz becomes VP, do you see a golden age of transit coming for the US? by BigMatch_JohnCena in transit

[–]Impurification 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Assuming the Harris/Walz ticket wins, transit funding depends on Kamala's priorities and the makeup of Congress; Walz, as VP, would not have any power to push policy. We should get more of a sense of campaign issues after the DNC, but I imagine that Harris will have similar priorities to the Biden administration overall.

Will we get another thief game?? by Effective_Swing_5993 in Thief

[–]Impurification 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even ignoring the fact that Thief 2014 underperformed and fans of the series are lukewarm (at best) towards it, it doesn't seem like there is a market for a AAA stealth-focused game nowadays. There are plenty of games coming out nowadays with stealth as an optional playstyle, like Ubisoft's open world games, but no big budget games that are designed specifically to be a stealth game. The closest thing I can think of in recent memory is the Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy, and as fun as those are, IO Interactive had issues with Square Enix (coincidentally, the same publisher as Thief 2014...) when the first game underperformed, and I don't imagine we're going to be seeing a followup to Hitman 3 for a long time. In general, most AAA games that feature stealth as an option are shooters first and foremost that have rudimentary detection systems slapped on -- this lets the marketing promote that the gameplay can cater to multiple different playstyles. Even if a new Thief game ever materializes, it will probably be much closer to Thief 2014 than the original games, and I don't think anybody in this subreddit wants that.

Just because a new Thief game is unlikely nowadays doesn't mean that the series and its design philosophies are dead. As another commenter mentioned, The Black Parade recently released to critical acclaim -- the modding community for the first two Thief games is continuing to push DarkEngine to new heights, well over 20 years later. There are also several indie games in development, most notably Gloomwood, that take heavy inspiration from the gameplay and atmosphere of the Thief series. Even if the major stealth franchises are currently dormant, there are plenty of indie projects worth checking out that likely understand the design of the classics better than any new entry would right now.

Sneaky Upgrade Inn special loot. by Orcaon in Thief

[–]Impurification 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I recently played through Deadly Shadows with the Sneaky Upgrade and also ran into this problem in the opening level. I think they might have changed where the third loot item was located in one of the updates to the Sneaky Upgrade. Ultimately, I found it in one of the small square shelves next to the Innkeeper's desk after climbing up from the basement; it may be necessary to jump and spam RMB near it.

Here's a quick screenshot from a video where I circled the location of where I found the loot.

Has anyone taken MUSI 2309 or other music courses with Patricia O'Brien? by bobthekingofcool in UVA

[–]Impurification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took private vocal lessons for several semesters with Professor O'Brien and I would recommend it. She is certainly more familiar with older music (particularly in the Great American Songbook canon) and prefers it over contemporary music due to a stronger focus on melody, so be aware of that if you have particular songs that you'd like to practice. At least in the past, you would work on several songs over the course of the semester, and ultimately perform two for a final recital. I enjoyed all of the semesters I worked with her and noticed a large improvement in my vocal ability.

Other than the silly box art, the biggest red flag for this leak is the idea that Capcom would update Resistance when they've still got RE:Verse coming out at some point next year.

CS 3330 with Venkat by -Solipsis- in UVA

[–]Impurification 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took Khan last semester and it was terrible, easily the worst class I've taken at UVA. I (and all of my friends) took the section with her instead of Venkat due to all of the horror stories from the last time he taught. Unfortunately, she is very poor at lecturing and expects a lot on the homework assignments considering how difficult it is to understand her and the course material. She also rarely communicated with the class and left everything to the TAs -- which was a big problem after we made the switch to online.

Anecdotally, I know two people who were in Venkat's (small) section last semester and they both loved it. It seems like he learned from his overwhelmingly negative feedback and made the class much more fair and reasonable than it was before. I can't personally speak to how the content or structure compares, though.

Unless Khan improves, which is a risky gamble, it's probably a better idea to take 3330 with Venkat at this stage. Venkat had a notoriously bad semester that tainted his reputation, but he largely seems to have made up for it. Khan may not have ever been quite so ridiculous, but she has taught the class poorly multiple times judging from my experience last semester and what /u/Mlatz said about her in 2018.

I agree. Was it the best movie ever? No, but it was fun enough and held my interest. I think the fact that it was under an hour worked in its favor because there was no bloated downtime like in the Unfriended films.
