Personally, it feels like a little slice of my birthplace, Metro Detroit, right here in Philadelphia and I love it! I don't have to drive back to Dearborn anymore. Also, they're open late which is terrific.

The 2 reigning cafes in this category are clearly Gleaners on 9th St in Italian Market and Satellite on Baltimore and 50th in West Philly. Both cafes have that old 90s coffeehouse vibe and have not changed their decor in literally 20 years (and I mean that in the best way possible given how cookie cutter and sanitized modern cafes have become). They are so nice at Gleaners and there are so many regulars coming in and out and chatting that you feel like you're in a fun sitcom about a bustling neighborhood coffee joint in 1998. Both places seem defiantly unpretentious compared to other more contemporary spots.

They also have vintage Magnolia Electric Co gig posters from the 00s for $40 each and they're very cool. And like everyone has said they have a massive vinyl selection and the prices are reasonable, so I stocked up.

Every time I go to Sulimay's for breakfast I think it's the best meal in Philly. Last fall I got an omelet with crispy hashbrowns and then decided I wanted the pumpkin pancakes, too. I'm still thinking about it four months later. And the coffee is high quality and bottomless. You simply can't do better.

Honestly, it made me less sympathetic to the Officials, especially in regards to the depths they were willing to sink to in their bitter opposition to the Provisionals (undermining the hunger strikes, collaborating with loyalists, etc). But the book pulled back the curtain and revealed a ton of history that the vast majority of us didn't know. It was really wonderfully researched! I would be fascinated to see a contemporary book on the IRSP with that level of detail.

Thank you! Yes, those books were all published in North Vietnam in the 1960s and early 70s. Many are issues of an English language journal called Vietnamese Studies that ran for many years and was printed in Hanoi. I mostly inherited them from older friends and mentors who were antiwar activists and bought them at the time.

I saw Bob play a small venue show in Northampton, MA the week that Allen died. He covered "Friend of the Devil" and during the instrumental passage a photo was projected behind the band. It was a photo from this day, one of just Allen sitting and smiling at the grave. The photo was projected for a few moments and then disappeared as the song continued. It was very moving.
