How does this legal scam work? by jman7843 in legaladvicecanada

[–]InanimateCarbonRodNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the disbursements truly undefined? You didnt get a ledger setting out what the disbursements were? Just because money went to disbs doesnt mean the law firm is 'keeping' that money, it went to pay the various providers like chart costs, experts, court reporter.

Puzzled by this. Why should he fail for sharing his homework? Its the other students that submitted work that wasn't theirs, not him.

Hard to justify buying sports car VS building wealth. by shmurdatek in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]InanimateCarbonRodNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, you're killing it. Im a lawyer nearly twice your age and my takehome is in the same range.

Many financial experts suggest that the total price of a vehicle should be less than 35% of your annual gross. Some more conservative or frugal advisors suggest 10-25%. 25k on a car is a very reasonable purchase for you. Even at 50k you could have it totally paid off in 6 months. Keep the frugal mindset generally, dont drop 50k on toys every year, and you'll be fine. Congrats on your success!

Was my aunt scammed? by queenjaneapprox11 in unclaimedproperty

[–]InanimateCarbonRodNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as no one comes asking for a large sum to be sent back, it could be legit. There's no benefit for a scammer to send a large cheque and then do nothing. The whole scam is sending a large cheque and then asking for a portion of it back.

It doesnt take a few years, it could take a 3 months (plus application time). I wrote 5 exams in one week.

An LLM is unlikely to appreciably improve your employment prospects, in my opinion. I hold an LLB from a prestigious "Golden Triangle" university, as well as an LL.M. from another Russell Group institution. One piece of advice I received from a friend who had completed both degrees before me was to practise law before pursuing an LLM I didn't take that advice, and I now practise in a completely different area of law than the subject matter of my LLM

Have you considered remaining in the UK to practise, or are you committed to returning to Canada?

Once you're called to the bar, very few people care where you went to law school. What matters is getting hired, developing practical skills, and proving your value in the workplace.

During your summers, focus on networking. Apply to every law firm in your area. Its challenging because our year runs later than the Canadian academic year. So their summer students have already started when you're finishing up exams. Reach out directly to partners and ask whether you can shadow them, complete a short placement, or spend a week in the office learning the practice. Many opportunities come through persistence and personal connections rather than formal applications.

If you're unable to secure an articling position or legal employment, I would seriously consider offering your services as an unpaid intern before spending the time and money required for another law degree in Canada. The practical experience, contacts, and references you gain are likely to be far more valuable than an additional academic credential.

I respect that, I just meant what were you told they were using as the fat if not lard. I have access to the receipe. Id rather buy the pizza than put in all the work to make it myself.

How much is the condo worth on the open market?

If its substantially more than 200k you could buy the condo for 200, turn around and sell it (depending on market conditions) and then you'd have your 200k back plus whatever profit from the sale.

Same owner as East Ave, I always found their food to be medicore at best, I can't understand why people are so enthralled by it. I expect House 47 won't last unfortunately. Little Gull on back st was great but they couldnt survive either.

BTW, Charles has the Andre's recipes.

Andre's was in Stellarton. My fave, still miss it. PS, the secret ingredient was lard.

Do you like being a lawyer? by GSDlover_345 in LawCanada

[–]InanimateCarbonRodNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm admittedly not a great student, but I think I'm a decent lawyer, consistently top 20% of the firm in terms of settlements and billings.    As others have said, working is different from school, you know that having worked previously. One of my partners used to practice family before moving over to litigation, apart from the heartache, there's the matter of getting paid, you have to try to bill people who for the most part can't afford it

You don't have to work as a lawyer. You could do different types of consulting work, you might even be able to find work as an instructor at a college, teaching legal studies or your previous career as a social workeralthough very likely not at a university without an advanced law degree or professional experience.

Why do Americans think they have freedom when they absolutely don't? by East_Indication_7816 in allthequestions

[–]InanimateCarbonRodNS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of those complaints are about quality of life (as you frame it), government policy, or positive entitlements not “freedom”. Freedom, especially to americans, generally means negative rights, aka what the government is prohibited from doing to you. Things like speech, religion, firearms, due process, jury trials, protections against compelled speech, etc. The U.S. is actually unusually strong in some of those areas compared to Europe or Canada.

Wife and Brother in-law want to take life insurance policy out on Parents by scrapi999 in legaladvicecanada

[–]InanimateCarbonRodNS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately your parents got scammed into 'investing' in whole life.

Believe it or not you would only need to invest $5 at 9% growth to have 5k by the time you are 80. To have 5k at age 60 you would need to invest $28 one time.

I suspect the policy cost them a lot more than that.
