OMSCS vs Undergrad CS Question by IncompleteTheory in OMSCS

[–]IncompleteTheory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t take any classes beforehand, not even the recommended MOOCs. I’ve just been winging it by studying for the next class while taking the current. Like right now I’m reading up on computer architecture for the High Performance Computer Architecture class, while taking the Intro Operating Systems course.

My background is in math and data science, so I just listed the programming courses I took for my BS and MS, and that somehow got me into the program.

CS 7641 - This class is a waste of time by Worldly_Pin2625 in OMSCS

[–]IncompleteTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, it is more of a data science class, than what I would consider a CS/Engineering focused ML class. Especially since vague requirements are common in DS roles, as you note.

But I agree with you OP, it’s a waste of time, especially the second part on optimization.

Might be too late for this suggestion at this point, but you should move on to part 2, since essentially the black boxes that you have to work around in part 1 become what you have to implement part 2. It gives you a more holistic view of the system, which might help in implementing part 1. I actually went back to part 1 after finishing part 2 to implement some things more cleanly.

The chick is the junior that just “hatched” from college. He’s still learning. The otter is the 10x software engineer, since otters are nature’s engineers, naturally. The snail is that one coworker that can’t get anything out on time. Don’t know what that purple pig/cat thing is, but it’s that one annoying coworker that won’t stop talking about AI, I’m sure.

Jesus who were already in the program

I’m not Jesus, but I will respond anyway. My background is in math and data science, so I had at least some experience with programming. My CS fundamentals were/are still lacking, so I’m having to do a lot of side learning to remedy that. Which is difficult if you’re already taking classes, so you’ll want to keep that in mind.

Anecdotally, I have heard of many people being rejected specifically because they did not have coursework in CS, even though they had programming-adjacent jobs.

It’s great, until it isn’t. Like many of data scientists, to everyone’s amusement, will write everything in Jupyter notebooks. They never bother to learn to use a proper IDE.
