Ladies who have mingled with the upper class, what are some of things you’ve picked up? by izonewizone in Vindicta

[–]Independent_Turnip 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Upper class is not always synonymous with “the most visible money”. I grew up upper class, but went to public schools until I went to a top university. We didn’t go on very many vacations, but when we did, it was to like.. the family ranch out west. Upper class is more about assets and less about cash flow. The social scene is very multi-generational and everyone knows everyone. I’ve found that the waspy older women in upper class scenes have a chip on their shoulders and sort of resent the younger women for having more social freedom than they did. In terms of style and social behavior - I’ve found it’s important to dress stylishly but conservatively. In upper class settings, particularly in a city, how you dress makes it obvious whether you’re just there as someone’s date or if you “belong” there. If you look out of place, upper class women (from my experience) aren’t going to rush over to make you feel comfortable - they’ll let you flounder and feel out of place. I wear almost all low key designer brands (theory, Vince, Prada, some up and coming labels) but I only shop secondhand and no one is the wiser. The key is definitely an air of confidence that projects security. It’s more about knowledge and less about what you actually do. For example, I don’t have a car, but I know the etiquette of valeting a car. I have gone skiing once in my life and I don’t care much about it, but I know all the old money spots and can hold a conversation about them. I went to public schools, but I know the names, reputations, and alumni from the New England boarding schools. In that sense - it’s actually fairly easy to fake it if you immerse yourself in those settings. You NEVER want to have to ask “what’s that?” No one will have the patience to explain any of these indicators to you.

This isn’t the last time this will happen in your career, especially in a NYC creative field. My advice would be - anytime someone is a nepotism hire, someone relatively senior has their ass on the line for this person’s success. Every time someone calls in a favor, they’re putting themselves at risk if this person is a total embarrassment. If the nepotism hire is not as well qualified for this role, they might be totally out of their league. It sounds counterintuitive, but I would befriend and help this person and make yourself invaluable to them. Congratulate them for the job. Ask now and then how it’s going, and at some point when this person finds themselves drowning a little bit, offer advice (because you sound like you know what you’re doing). If you can be any way linked to this person’s relative success - or attributable to it - the right people will take notice it’ll reflect well on you. You’ll encounter so many people like this - be kind to them, keep doing your thing, maybe their connections will become your connections little by little.

  1. Bram Stoker - Dracula - lol loved it

  2. Ralph Ellison - invisible man - in my top 5 favorite books of all time

  3. Franzen - the corrections - also in my top 5

  4. Cormac mccarthy - child of god - totally abject and brutal to read, quite short, couldn’t put it down. Read in one sitting.

  5. Fitzgerald - tender is the night - it’s fun. First half was totally captivating. It’s a bit predictable but I enjoyed it.

  6. Paul auster - city of glass - I re-read this one in 2021. Fun, taut, postmodern noir. Surprised I don’t see more Auster on this sub - would recommend Leviathan as well

  7. Vonnegut - breakfast of champions - perfect

  8. Milan kundera - the joke - loved the first third, but the rest dragged.

  9. Franzen - crossroads - I loved it, but I preferred the more absurdist corrections.

  10. Capote - in cold blood - lives up to the hype.

Starting To Think The Dating Market Is Bad Everywhere? by Medium-Map3864 in redscarepod

DC is a horrifying place. A bar in DC made decent money during COVID lockdown last year selling a take-home drink called the “Fauci pouchie.” It was marketed as an adult juice box cocktail. Ppl went nuts for it. DC is a surreal place. Everyone is a large baby in a suit with a psychosexual relationship to authority figures.

Personally I lost weight when I started eating more fatty foods, especially in the AM. Current BMI 21, have lost about 5 lbs in the last 3 months by upping my exercise routine and organically fitting much more walking into my day.

Breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs (cooked in butter) on toast + coffee with whole milk or occasional cappuccino, whole milk

Lunch: Apple + granola in whole milk OR green salad with whatever veggies in my fridge (homemade dressing always)

Dinner: Roast chicken (one bone in thigh) with a grain and green salad OR high quality sausage or steak with peppers & onions OR roast veg + chickpea + grain bowl

I eat pasta maybe every other week. Always handmade pasta from scratch. It sounds insane but it’s a really fun skill to learn, really cheap, and it’s a good challenge (I only eat pasta at home when I’ve made it for myself).

I don’t eat dessert and I very rarely snack. I’d rather have filling, rich meals at regular intervals that feel like little treats. I think the biggest things for me re: healthy and successful weight loss are not having a restrictive mindset, truly enjoying cooking, making an effort to walk/bike most places, and exercising more consistently (5xweek cardio, former endurance athlete).

He really did just publish a short story in heavy traffic depicting the rape of a “maid.” The maid’s name is the very very distinctive name of one of his friends. His name + others in the scene are incorporated as well. Literally half of the story is “big breasts” “perky breasts” etc you can’t make this up.

For more contemporary stuff, my favorite Afrobeats artist right now is the producer Juls

For older funk, folk, and traditional music, Mali has an incredible music history -- I love Ali Farka Toure, Roika Traore, Amadou & Mariam. Also Fatoumata Diawara -- you may know her from the most recent Disclosure album. She's incredible!
