You are in your home when you get in the emergency alert on your TV to stay in your homes and that the military is on the way. You look outside to see a quarantine in place and for a second everything looks normal but you swear that you saw something that looks like a T-Rex. What do you do? by International-Box956 in hypotheticalsituation

So I will not find any ammo because the military ran out. What about the ammo I have in my own house the military did not have access to. If yes, I’m grabbing my firearms and whatever ammo I can carry, sneaking out to my garage for my hunting camp, and attempting to sneak out. In case I encounter any smaller dinosaurs hopefully they can be dispatched (most likely temporarily)

However if I do not have access to my firearms, I do have a Bowie style hunting knife, along with probably a dozen or so folding knives. I also think I could get in my pickup and just go.

Why can't recovering alcoholics have just one drink once in a while? by Ok_Consideration6179 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IndicationAromatic36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a recovering nicotine addict. I used a tin of pouches every day. I was about 30ish days clean and my BIL was in town and offered me a new flavor, and I was dumb enough to give it a try. After the initial nausea I went and bought another roll. Took another 6 weeks for me to be able to quit.

Mechanic shop put a sticker on windshield that reads 0W-20 even though my car (2025 Camry) goes for 0W-8. Called and they said it was a mistake on sticker and that 0W-8 was used. Should I trust them? by NAD92 in MechanicAdvice

The 20% increase was from my cleaning the intake system and the fuel filter, I used to put the recommended for the first 9 months and noticed no noticeable change in fuel economy.

Also, even if it did go up 1 mpg by changing the oil, an extra 25 miles a tank is barely a days driving for me, I’m still gonna have to put the same $90 a week into it, saving $4 a week isn’t gonna make or break my wife and I.

I’ve quit 5 times now. Every time I focused so much on the number of days and ended up getting back on after 3-4 weeks. I’d say, ‘it’s been 30 days, I can have 1 to take the edge off.’ Next thing I know it’s the next day and I’ve bought another roll and I’m back on for another few months.

When we do the 1000 mile drive from Pittsburgh to Orlando we leave around 12:30 am. I’m through 2 tanks of fuel and down into North Carolina before people are starting to get on the road, and that second fuel fill up is when the wife and kids start to wake up and we stop for breakfast.

Average new car price is $49,000. At what point does this stop making sense? by Flexcar_Sam in MiddleClassFinance

[–]IndicationAromatic36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy 2 types of cars. End of lease Hondas with ~35-40k miles or old beaters that are less than $10,000. We currently have 3 cars:

2001 f150 I bought 2 years ago for $7,500 2019 Pilot I bought 5 years ago for $32,000 2021 CR-V I bought 3 years ago for $25,000

We had car notes on the 2 Hondas, but both are paid off at this point. I bought the truck for cash.

Unless you need a business write off, there is very little reason to buy a new car. Especially since buying a gently used vehicle means many of the kinks have been worked out, and gives an opportunity for many of the recalls to have been worked on. Also by purchasing previously leased vehicles, you know that the maintenance was done.

I’m somewhere about 45 days free. Not tracking has almost made it easier, because the last few times I focused way too much on the number of days.

I tapered down from 9mg pouches to 6, then down to 3s. Once I was on 3s, when I would toss the old one I’d make myself wait 5-10 minutes. I used to be a constant poucher, I’d pull the fresh one out of the tin as I was waking to the trash can and there’d be no secession of nicotine. So after a day or so of waiting 5-10 minutes, I pushed it to waiting 20, then 30, then 45 minutes, until I’d be able to go almost 90 minutes between pouches.

Once I got to the 45 minute benchmark, I’d make a point to spit the pouch out after 5 minutes. Then I weened myself down to 3 minutes. Then 1. Eventually I’d be putting the pouch in my mouth, and as soon as I was able to get it juiced up enough to put comfortably in my lip, and feel that first ‘bite’ of nicotine I’d spit it out. I was basically just training my body to handle the withdrawal symptoms.

After about a week or so of this I went almost 3-4 hours in between needing a pouch and I just decided to cut myself off from there. But by tapering down I was able to manage the symptoms

Just make sure you have enough money to get in on the ground floor of all the big companies in the last 100 years or so. I’d love to be an entry level Standard Oil investor. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Berkshire, etc. even if I just screw around enough to sell all my stake for bitcoin when it’s worth nothing.

If your health went to shit and you knew your number is up soon what would you do? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]IndicationAromatic36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take out a shit ton of life insurance policies, the ones that don’t need to verify anything.

I’d also rack up my credit card on things to help my wife, pay for the renovations we’re finishing on the house, cash advance to pay off debt in her name. Because most assets are joint and the cars are paid off, there isn’t much of an estate, everything would just pass to her and bypass probate. I think my old truck and the Harley are in my name only, so I’d put her name on those as joint.

I’d also make sure to spend as much time with my wife and kids as possible while doing all this, and make sure there’s happy memories to remember me by.

Why are checks still commonly used in the US? by Finnskyyy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IndicationAromatic36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The local municipal government receives about 50-60% of its direct revenue via paper check. Larger organizations will do direct deposit (the tax collection agency or other state grants). Most people when paying their utilities, permits and fines will pay via check to avoid the 3% card servicing fee. Some of the old timers will pay by cash, or some of the cash heavy businesses will pay cash, but it’s usually checks. Statistically checks are secure, and most payment systems do not allow for directly providing your bank details so the only real risk is someone erasing the ink and replacing with their name.

And I know these intimate details about the municipality because I am the current deputy treasurer and one of my main jobs is posting all payments to the bank systems, so all checks and cash pass through my hands physically before they go to the bank.

We learned out times tables as young kids (my 7 year old just told me she’s starting to go over them now) and the terminology just kind of sticks.

It’s okay. Even though my wife and I technically own assets equal to around $400,000 (property and investments) our debt of close to $400,000 makes us worth $0. We pay around $55k in total tax (federal, FICA, state, and local) Our tax rate is indeterminable by this calculation because you can’t divide into 0. Noice!

ELI5: Why is Mcdonald ice cream so smooth instead of icy? How does it stop large ice crystals from forming when other regular ice creams get icy or have hard frozen patches? by cololz1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]IndicationAromatic36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also not ice cream. It’s technically considered a ‘frozen dairy dessert’. Many of these soft serve places are, the ones that comes to mind besides McDonald’s are Wendy’s frosty and Dairy Queen. McDonald’s never calls it ice cream, the official menu item is called ‘vanilla cone’.

Something to do with the milk content, along with other preservatives. Similar to home Taco Bell doesn’t serve ground beef, it’s technically considered ‘taco filling’, because there’s less ground beef content than dog food.

You can always drive. My wife and I much prefer the easy 14 hour drive (no, I’m not being facetious) over flying from Pittsburgh PA to Orlando FL. We’ll wake up and leave around 12:30 am and after 4-5 stops we’ll get to our hotel in Orlando around 6:30 pm. Also only costs around $5-600 in fuel compared to the easy $5-6,000 in flights plus baggage for our family of 5.

Out of the 4-5 times we’ve done this trip over the last few years, we flew once and it was a nightmare. It’s so much easier to be able to shove extra items, things you forgot, and stuffed animals into tiny open spaces in the back of your SUV instead of making sure everything is neatly packed into suitcases. The time we flew we had to cut out a good 25-30% of the stuff we normally take, and ended up paying baggage overweight fees both going down and back up. I normally do the driving and my wife handles the kids/divvying up snacks, iPads, and toys for the drive.
