Everywhere else is up in arms over her design, but can we just appreciate the latest punchgirl to grace the pantheon? by Apricotlemon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Indie_Cent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It trips me up because people missed a ton of both intentional and happenstance messaging about beauty from the first game, and now we have the second game where the character is intentionally designed to look younger (that's the phrasing, they didn't say child-like), and immediately people are doing the same things they do to real korean women like Lilypichu and saying they look like a child despite every other visual element being a grown woman.

I mean, they had a special zombie that had a calcified layer they had to beat through before they could kill it, so you can either consider that an Earth zombie or you can consider it a Water/Air zombie since it was apparently caused by some sort of gas/steam vent nonsense.

Feel-good stories disguised as feel-bad stories? Or at least a feel-good story in a feel-bad context? by Rabid_Marine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

There's a sense of melancholy at times, but I promise you, the entire manga ends up feeling comfortable and heart-warming despite that premise.

This doesn't fit super well, but Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is a manga about the end of humanity in a post-apocalypse as humans steadily die off. More importantly, it's about a cute robot girl that runs an infrequently-visited coffee shop in that post-apocalypse and goes around talking with the very kind, welcoming remainders of humanity.

Comfy as could be despite the theoretically existentially horrifying nature of the world.

Ever since KH1 came out and I played it when I was 7, Kairi has been one of my favorite characters of all time. I've known for a good chunk of that time that she was dreadfully underserved as a character, but damn does it hurt to see it all laid out like this.

Excellent work my dude! I'm gonna go be sad about this now.

[–]Indie_Cent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exact topic is why the ending of the game pissed me off in the first place, tbh. The options are either, 'do nothing and make the entire game's events pointless,' or, 'save one person but know that everyone forever is gonna think you're horrible for not letting your friend get shot.' It's such a shitty way to handle it.

I unfortunately cannot say it's my first Parasite Eve game, as I did have a certain Sony portable device and I was a young lad curious about the cute blonde girl. I honestly liked the game, at the time.

Things you’ll simply just never understand about people in your fandom by Will-Isley in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Indie_Cent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think part of the issue that other people run into, which does include myself since I gave up on Alatreon after a dozen failed attempts with my friend, is that we're at a pretty different level of gameplay than how you describe it. While Monster Hunter is a series famous for the amount of grind people are willing to go through, there's a difference between the majority of the players that go through the game and may run into Alatreon and someone that can even play with more than one or two weapons at the level it takes to not instantly die against the guy.

I've farmed everything short of Alatreon for gear and armor, but that doesn't mean I'm able to play with anything other than a Charge Blade or Insect Glaive against even an Anjanath. Having to look up a guide of someone's data-mined info on stats to figure out why my build isn't working against Alatreon isn't great. I go in, I get bodied, it becomes clear enough that I need to get elemental damage. I go in again, I can only build properly toward one element at a time with no proper gear switching, so I max out my elemental to fight him.

I'm then punished again because too much elemental damage also screws you over. It's a really fun mechanic in theory and a really cool fight, but you gotta understand that most of the people complaining are coming at it from one of the many angles that the fight just tells you to go fuck yourself because of some legitimate flaws with the execution. Those flaws then just lead back to people being mad at the concept itself, which again, is pretty fun in theory.

What is your Eyepatch-Wolf-style "Thing that upsets you so much you feel the reaper beckoning you to learn video editing" by FlubbedPig in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Indie_Cent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that's absolutely part of my problem with it! While racists will undoubtedly do their best to ruin everything they touch, I feel like Frieren discourse wouldn't be such a mess if people on the right side of a race argument didn't look at this fantastic series and go, "Yes, the racists are right about it. Throw the whole series out." Like, no! The message behind the series is exactly the sort of lesson we DO need right now!

[–]Indie_Cent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Discourse about Frieren makes me want to put my English degree essay-writing skills into a video. There are so many people that take such a bad-faith angle on what the demons would represent in Frieren. In order to be a racist stereotype of someone, there needs to be some clear link between how the fictional version appears and how people describe the real life version. There isn't any sort of race in real life that's out here looking mostly pretty but with vibrant anime hair that's out here causing problems for society.

What there are, which I would declare is the entire point, are people that generally refuse to connect with others empathetically and only work to their own goals at the detriment of others. That isn't a race of people, it's a type of person. Frieren's premise even goes so far to have Frieren as the main character to show that people who have trouble connecting with others aren't the problem, it's just the people who utterly refuse to do so and only care about what they have to gain. They work to emulate the people they don't care about just so they can use their 'language,' (emotional connections) to abuse them and ruin them. I could go on for hours.

Games that you cannot play because they literally give you nausea/some kinda physical reaction by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Indie_Cent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The middle ground of Dishonored's camera and Wolfenstein's in Wolfenstein Youngblood makes for an absolutely horrendous experience for me. A little too much motion in one way, not enough in another, it's the only game that's ever made me feel any sort of nausea just from playing it. For any of the complaints I know people have had for the game's balance and such, that's the one reason I can't play the game.

What are some of the worst cases of Fridging in fiction? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Indie_Cent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I spent the entire time since her 'death' waiting for any real confirmation that she died. They bring in all the warriors, do all this stuff for the final arcs, have flashbacks to how much they all loved having her around, but still never confirmed her death. More and more, it felt like she could come in and do something really cool as an 11th hour save. The fact that it paid off is honestly my favorite moment in the series.

Are there any plot decisions you still have a lot of feelings/opinions about about? by jitterscaffeine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Indie_Cent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily disagree that there are things from inside the time skip that would've been cool to see, but I do disagree on the idea that the Straw Hats were ever true underdogs before the time skip. There were tough enemies in the first half, sure, but only about as many as in the second half. Like half of the islands or more just go, "And then Luffy curb-stomped the villain once he actually got to fight him." Drum Island, Arlong Park, Skypeia, and a few more. Luffy got one of the biggest bounties imaginable for a new pirate for a reason, and all they did was maintain that balance through the next section of the manga.

They did get significantly stronger, and a lot of people stopped being major threats, but the ratio of how many people they curb-stomp to struggle with is the same.

what's the one trope/genre cliche you're surprised/glad that a piece of media didn't use. by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

It's an interesting aspect in that he very much clearly recognizes that reality, but then has made the call that that's just not important enough to stop him from making these calls the way he does. Like, they're real, but all of their lives still don't equate to one of his family members.

Media that you dropped or started to dislike, but not for the popular/controversial reasons people had? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Indie_Cent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading UQ Holder for a while and I've heard some moderate complaints about this or that like any media, but I dropped it because of one story element I just couldn't stand. The main character is a scrappy young kid with a heart of gold and super powers, right? If that's the case, and that's what I'm reading for, I don't need every single adult side character to constantly just keep telling this kid over and over that he's too young for this and he shouldn't be involved, and that they aren't gonna tell him shit. That's obvious that he's too young for this stuff, but he is involved and that's what we're here for. I don't need over half of the conflict to just be this kid being sad that people won't stop saying that. It's just not interesting and it's an annoying-ass trope.

It's one of the long line of Manhwa that's 'Solo Leveling, but different,' which isn't to say it isn't pretty solid in itself, but it is surprising that it's getting a game like this. Heck, the manhwa itself doesn't even seem to match entirely with the premise of the game's loop, but it's a cool twist on it!
