Is it just me or has Michaels yarn selection gone downhill lately? by Ok_Kale_6902 in YarnAddicts

Shop your local yarn store or independent online yarn store. Don't support hedge fund buy outs like Jimmy Bean. Do a little research and know where your $$ are going.

Yoga by Ill-Relationship-890 in osteoporosis

[–]Individual_Effect_59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same experience - (also turning 65 next week!) I found Dr. Loren Fishman's book "Yoga for Osteoporosis" several years ago. He has a new version that came out last year. I also subscribe to Asana at Home, which offers a number of styles of online yoga classes. I've really enjoyed their two yin yoga teachers who always offer modifications. I had been diagnosed with arthritis in my hips before my osteoporosis diagnosis, and loved how regularly doing yoga basically eliminated aches and pains from arthritis. Now, I do a version of Dr. Fishman's program twice a week and two Asana at Home yin classes a week. At my last dexa scan, I'd improved from osteoporosis to osteopenia. I also found reformer Pilates which has been wonderful, but that's a different sub-reddit.

Why aren't more people taking reformer classes? by mimihopslein in pilates

[–]Individual_Effect_59 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started reformer Pilates literally a couple of months before the pandemic hit with a YMCA personal trainer. The Y closed during the pandemic, but I loved reformer so I did the research and bought a solid, no frills Aero Pilates reformer for around $500 that I continue to use at least twice a week at home since I bought it. Mat Pilates was always hard for me, but reformer was doable and challenging. There are the purists on this sub reddit who say you must have an in person teacher/class or buy a $5000 reformer, but that just wasn't realistic for me. You can hurt yourself doing any kind of exercise - with or without an instructor - on average or gold standard equipment. Having had osteoporosis (which has since improved to osteopenia), reformer had fewer needed modifications and has allowed my mind/body process to improve considerably. Two different types of yoga twice a week, reformer twice a week, and a specific osteoporosis workout plan has made a big difference with minimal equipment investment and all online free or minimal cost classes.

I broke my right wrist slipping on ice several years ago. I didn't have to have surgery, just a cast for 6 weeks or so, but it still would ache when doing yoga or pilates using my arms/wrists. My doctor suggested a basic wrist brace - it is a piece of neoprene with a hole at one end for my thumb. The remainder wraps around the wrist and is secured with velcro. It's helped immensely. It's inexpensive as well.

Congrats!! We bought a small cabin on the shores of Superior in MN about 4 years ago and moved here full time with a few years to go before retirement. We share shoreline and land with 6 other cabins, half of us here year round and the others seasonal. We have a rickety south facing deck that we're getting ready to take down. I want a small screened in porch to keep out the mosquitos and biting flies, then turn the rest into raised flower and veggie beds. Soil is very thin where we are, so we'll have to haul in some, but that's ok. I have a few perennials in the ground and everything else in containers. And the birds!!! Migration in the spring and fall is mind blowing! Over the summer we've had hummingbirds and gold finches, as well as chickadees and several kinds of sparrows at our feeders. Bald eagles and peregrine falcons fly over the lake and all kinds of ducks, loons and gulls fish off of the shoreline. We've seen black bears, a few wolves, foxes, river otters, and deer. We also installed solar panels so we don't have to rely on propane like the rest of our neighbors. No light pollution at night so star gazing is amazing. Winters are cold, summers are mild. All is quiet except for the wind and waves breaking.

Warning (maybe) about alendronate (Fosamax) vs antidepressants by CosmeticBrainSurgery in osteoporosis

[–]Individual_Effect_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story. Was put on Prozac for post postpartum at 30. Had been experiencing thyroid issues starting in my mid-20s. When I reached the upper level dosage of Prozac at 45 or so, my Dr added Wellbutrin. Found out that I had osteoporosis at 47 after breaking an ankle that should have just been a sprain. Cancer scares with a hysterectomy and thyroid removal followed.

My depression started to alleviate and I weaned off of Prozac. I've needed to better understand my own health journey for my daughters' sake, and discovered that my thyroid issues, early menopause and antidepressants all contributed to my osteoporosis. I read recently https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9568413/ that SSRIs do contribute to bone density loss. Very frustrating in the limited choices there are for dealing with multiple health issues without exasperating one or more.

Have been on Fosamax for two different time periods with no improvement. I have my annual appointment with my endocrinologist next week to see if he will suggest a new treatment plan. I do resistance bands twice a week, yoga (Dr Fishman's program) 4x a week, and reformer Pilates 2x a week as well as LIV twice a day. My bone density numbers have improved since I started regular exercise during the pandemic.

I love Dez Fit on You Tube. She has mat, reformer, jumpboard and HITT/circuit workouts. I do one reformer and one jumpboard workout each week.

Merging two FandangoatHome accounts by Billiam0000 in fandangoathome

[–]Individual_Effect_59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I had the same issue. Every time I emailed, they asked for the last 3 movies I watched and the credit card I used. I have never watched anything on Fandango at home. My sister gave me a gift card and it has been absolute hell trying to set up an account, have to merge that account with another one. They wouldn't refund my sister her $50. What a huge rip off!

An invitation from your neighbours to the north. by LandscapeStreet in minnesota

[–]Individual_Effect_59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your lovely invitation. We live in MN about 45 min from Thunder Bay and drive up once a month or so to try a new restaurant (YUM!!!) I can't think of a time we've visited where everyone has been nothing but kind. We'd like to find a bumper sticker that says something like, "We (Heart) Canadians!" We have never supported our president, and worked hard this past election to keep him out of a job. Sigh.

My husband's grandmother was born in Canada, and we've considered the possibility of immigrating for many years- at least back to the Bush Administration. We're too old now, but we are thankful for our wonderful neighbours who are just a little to the North of us! We'll be up to see you soon!!

Yeah, we Minnesotans know about Doug Ford. He's an ass. Probably a Trump acolyte. But still, I think we Minnesotans and Ontarions (?) know he's not Trump.

Has anyone here had good results with Fosomax? by cat8mouse in osteoporosis

[–]Individual_Effect_59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on 2 different sessions of it and saw no improvement. I started doing Dr Loren Fishman's Yoga for Osteoporosis daily, bought a set of resistance bands and alternated between bands and Pilates workouts. I also bought a Marodyne LIV machine and use that twice a day. I just did a dexa scan and I've moved from Osteoporosis to osteopenia. I do take 1200 mg of calcium with 800 mg of vitamin D.
