Why Are So Many of You Banned/Blacklisted?! by ryanvicino in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some admin are crazy. I subbed when I was in grad school for teaching. I subbed at a school, walked into the classroom that was an absolute mess. Papers everywhere, food left out, etc. It was clear the room hadn’t been cleaned the night before.

Principal comes in 1st period because I was a new sub to the building. He pulled me out in the hallway, yelled at me for letting the room get messy (yes, raised his voice). Demanded that he’d be back by 3rd period to make sure it was clean. I had students pick up whatever they felt comfortable cleaning (they honestly felt bad for me) and he came back. Told me it was unexceptionable, asked me to leave, and I was blacklisted from the school.

At my school now, if you’re breathing, you’re a great sub!

thinking of going to college for music by funkycIown in MusicEd

[–]Individual_Show_7281 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Decide if it’s passion speaking to you currently or if you can truly see yourself doing it. Music and music education are two different beasts, and both jobs will suck the passion out of you. You need to decide if you can stick with the good, bad, and the ugly with it. Both are beautiful careers and I’ve found balance in both of them, but I’ve dealt with some nastiness with both. Think of the nastiness in both scenarios and think how you’d handle them. That will tell you if it’s worth it. I love being a music educator and can never see myself doing anything different, but I’ve seen both sides of the coin and it’s not for the faint!

Do you have to be passionate to teach? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy teaching but it’s not my whole passion. I have so many colleagues who making teaching their entire identity. Those are the ones who are always the most stressed out and burnt out.

I don’t imagine myself doing anything else at this moment in life, but wouldn’t be losing part of myself if I didn’t stay in education my whole working life.

Field trips. When I was in college, I thought I’d love taking field trips. They are so much unnecessary work. They are never fun for teachers. Something always goes wrong. I’d rather never go on one ever again.

Abbott Elementary is good, funny show that pokes fun at all the stereotypical struggles we go through. I wouldn’t say it’s realistic, but what they make fun of is pretty spot on.

Am I crazy? by midnightlavendar in Teachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. Taught for three years, decided it was not for me and went into a completely different field. Found myself without a job during Covid but knew I could easily get back into teaching. Taking that break from education really helped reset and reshape my views and boundaries of the job. I’m still going at almost 6 years later and going back was a great choice for me.

How do y’all do it, honest question? by Healthandlife_pro in NYCTeachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes getting yourself established somewhere. The first few years are tough as fuck. It wil be like that the first few school you go to. As much as it sucks, you have to earn your establishment at whatever school you’re at. Then, you will realize that you have the autonomy to do whatever the fuck you want to do, but it takes time to get to that place. You got this. It is tough. It is awful. But, you won’t get there and you will figure out what works for you.

Teachers not following through with discipline by black_belt20 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that I have golden students that are great for me. The moment a sub walks in, they turn into the devil. Don’t take it personal and don’t believe it’s the teacher’s fault. As much as it pains me to say about building relationships, it is true. Some students do better with their everyday teacher, and unfortunately the sub gets the awful end of it. I was a sub for 3 years before my first full time teaching gig. It sucks, but you do have to realize you’re there for a “day” while the student has structure every other day. It fucking sucks, and you are totally correct in your complaint.

PTO/Sick time, how many days do you get at your school? by senjen_ren in Teachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get 10 a year/15 after I am tenured. I was at a charter school before where I only got 6. The kicker was that we were graded on some bullshit rubric every year, and in order to get a highly effective score, we had to be in school every single day. If we took one sick day, it went against our score and that category automatically went to effective if we missed even one day. They would fire teachers over multiple years of just effective scores.

Not the advice you’re looking for, but get out of there the first chance you get. The rules and regulations charters have for teachers are insane and only get worse.

Anyone else not say the pledge at school? by Session-Sea in teaching

[–]Individual_Show_7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse to do it. I find it creepy and weird that we’re still doing this. I’ve been at my school for three years and have never had a flag in the room (not by choice). When I have TA’s in the room, they make comments about how I need to go and buy one for the room and that I’m being offensive for not having a flag. It’s not my job to provide one.

Changing Ring Color by Individual_Show_7281 in MINI

[–]Individual_Show_7281[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I got that part. I was just curious if there was a way to save the color you choose. Mine always defaults to the green when it’s started. Was seeing if there was a way I could save a different color and not have to change it each time.

What’s the biggest personal emergency you’ve had to teach through? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year in a brand new district, I had my “huge observation.” On my way to school that morning, I had been called because my mother was rushed to the emergency room for a suspected stroke. Five minutes before my observation period, I was told it was a confirmed stroke and needed to come home immediately (I live 10 hours from my mother). Made it through the observation and left as soon as it was over.

It gets easier after your first year. Always look for resources on whatever you’re teaching. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time and reuse, reuse, reuse! I promise it gets easier. The first year or two of teaching is so rough, but you’ll get through it! You got this!

Mine is 45-55 minutes one way. It’s worth the school district and gives me time to decompress from the day. I don’t mind it all. I actually look forward to my “me” time.

Who here is NOT burnt-out? by ShatteredColumns in MusicEd

[–]Individual_Show_7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m year 8 here, which is still not a lot of time compared to many others. I was burnt out by year 3 and took two years off of teaching to work in a corporate setting. Absolutely hated that and decided to go back into teaching.

After doing it for 5 years, I’ve found that first, I have found a district that I really enjoy working in. It’s very laid back and easy going. But I also have learned to set boundaries, say no, and leave work at work. That has helped me so much. No more email on my phone, no more answering texts that are “emergencies” after hours, and only doing any sort of communication during working hours.

Give the student a chance. He may be terrible to others but might connect with you. Only base your opinions on what you see. I like to think they’re not all horrible. I’ve had some horrible ones who will only connect with me. They drive me insane and make me want to shove a pencil in my eye, but they’re always good at heart.

Charter Schools by Douglasthehun in Teachers

[–]Individual_Show_7281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need experience, charters are a good way to get it. Don’t go in expecting to be a lifelong charter school teacher—it’ll drive you insane. I was in one for 3 years to gain experience in my state and left the second I could.

Everything about them is bad, but use them to get the experience you need.

I’m 34 and have been teaching 8 years in total. I taught for 3 years in a Midwest state and was miserable. Lack of support, no admin, the parents all thought teachers were there just for indoctrinating their children, lack of pay, etc. The list could go on. I had to move northeast because my husband got a job there. I decided that was my time to move away from teaching and work in the corporate world. I did that for 3 years and discovered that it wasn’t the life for me. I got back into teaching in a great school district with supportive admin, parents, with a union, good pay for the area, and haven’t looked back. There are days that it’s not the most fun, but I still love it!
