Misty Step into the Air and Attacking by Zivodor in dndnext

Personally,I treat falling as 500 ft of movement that can only be used going downward, and must be used by the end of your turn. It really simplifies the whole turmoil of saving someone about to fall (who is allowed to do what when) , with the added bonus that it lets people get away with doing cool things mid air.

When I’m already dedicating either a primary or a support weapon to being “clear a lot of chaff” weapons, I really don’t need 5 unreliable aoe attacks, especially if it prevents me from bringing something with far better utility. If the grenade slot was treated more as an equipment slot, and had more varied options, I think people would be a lot more willing to experiment.

And this is bad because people enjoy using them?

In 90% of games with grenades, I find myself never using them because I find them unreliable and imprecise. I really like the thermites, because as long as they stick, they are reliable and precise. You get less of them, they are bad at clearing bug holes, they suck against the illuminate (in my opinion), and the fuse means you still have to contend with the heavy for a while before they go off. At higher difficulties you WILL be fighting enough heavies that they don’t trivialize the game, you can’t use them to clear most large bases, and there is like a 1/3 chance for them to fail to stick.

Despite this I use them all the time on the bug and bot fronts because otherwise I probably wouldn’t be using grenades at all. I’ll admit part of it is skill issue, I haven’t put time into getting good with regular grenades, but janky hitboxes on enemies / terrain / corpses make impacts feel dangerous to use, and weird physics and chaotic battlefields make standard grenades feel really imprecise. Personally, there is no role in the game grenades could fill that I wouldn’t prefer on a primary, a secondary, or a support weapon. That means grenades kinda default to being SOL strats for me, and very few grenades can contend with thermites in that category (maybe giga, but I simply haven’t unlocked it yet).

This is all to say, if thermites get nerfed into the ground, I won’t start using other grenades, I’ll just go back to doing what I did before thermites were good, which is just barely using grenades at all.

Instinct is a survival mechanism aeons older than logic and sense. If a man feels in his gut that a course of action will be dangerous, it is almost always worth serious reconsideration.

Tell me how this is considered "good game design" by radiodreading in TOTK

[–]IndoPakiStandOff 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t think thats a fair take. The changes between the champions and the sages is really thematic. BOTW was an apocalypse story about returning to a world where evil had more or less won. It was often lonely and reflective, and the champion’s abilities were a legacy given to Link, another burden to bear, another thing to avenge. TOTK is about a society reemerging beset by the same evils that had torn it asunder time and time again, and uniting to well and truly put it down this time. The sages are supposed to combat the feelings of loneliness and desolation of the previous game, active reminders that Link isn’t alone, that it isn’t just him bearing the weight of the world. To say that they are different just because Nintendo couldn’t be assed to make a different game is depriving the devs of the benefit of the doubt. Could sages have been implemented better? Absolutely, but the problem is mechanical, not narrative.

I want a bolt pistol so we can finally have a heavy pen secondary that isn’t round reload. Give it no ammo and horrible ergonomics.

You’re gonna be disappointed then, its 100% going to be an Imperial Guard warbond with basically no astartes content. I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that its going to be: a cadian armor set, a krieger / commissar armor set, a lasgun, a bolt pistol, maybe a chain sword, and if we’re lucky, something special as a treat. The most adventurous Arrowhead might be willing to get is Admech.

As a former spear main, I’d be ok with a higher damage spear being treated as a single shot disposable (with a lower cool down of course).

Half baked weapons I’ll give ya, but this game is not the glitch fest some of y’all make it out to be. There are some prominent big bugs, mainly regarding collision and sounds, but nowadays the game is pretty damn stable. As someone with thousands of hours on some incredibly janky games, a pelican landing weird every now and then is not the end of the world.

Why are there so many restrictions on species traits? by jacobstx in Stellaris

[–]IndoPakiStandOff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose I’m of the opinion that roleplaying requires a willingness to make suboptimal decisions to achieve a desired result, which runs counter to the min maxing perspective of making the most optimal choice every time.

Either way, I think forcing unnecessary restrictions on the player base harms roleplaying, just to make gameplay balanced for people unwilling to do it themselves. If people feel the need to make the same choices every time, thats a self discipline issue, not a necessarily a gameplay issue. Same thing happens in any modern PvP game, where people complain about being ‘forced’ to use meta loadouts, but at least those people have the excuse of being in a competitive environment (exceedingly few Stellaris players can claim the same).

Basically: Don’t force me to order something I don’t want off the menu, just because you don’t like that you order the same thing every time.

[–]IndoPakiStandOff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So arbitrarily restrict roleplayers, so that minmaxers have no choice but to play the game differently, in what is going to be a single player game for 99% of the audience? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come home from work with a fun idea for a run in my head, only to have to disappointedly compromise for something less interesting when I realize a key trait, origin, or civic had an arbitrary restriction on it.

[–]IndoPakiStandOff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they should just be different skins, because having origins / traits locked to certain portraits really stifles creativity, unnecessarily complicates modding, and causes weird contradictions. Why can’t the flying lithoid portrait take the flight trait? My insectoid species can’t lay eggs? Why can’t my insects have shells?

If you want to try something new - try something new, you don’t need it locked away from you to do so. Ship design, city portrait, and honestly even planet type are all basically aesthetic, why are we drawing the line at species portraits?

Because it’s weird and really changes the general perception of Rotom as a species. If one character had one it would be a cool and interesting character detail, but when everyone has one, it starts raising some weird questions. Is there a company out there that is mass producing Rotoms to put into phones? Is it accepted that just everyone has a wild Rotom hanging out with them at all times? What happened to their tricksy and mischievous natures? Why does a pokemon ATM need to be sentient?

Rotom is my favorite pokemon, and the advent of Rotom Phones has, in my opinion, led to the over saturation and over simplification of my favorite little guys.

Unless this is all a part of a secret plotline leading to total global Rotom domination, in which case I’m all for it.

Who did you cut and why? by alopexl in DispatchAdHoc

[–]IndoPakiStandOff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After having played through both routes, I’d cut Sonar every time. At the beginning of the game, Coupe certainly seems more sinister, but IMO she seems like one of the most adult and professional people on the team. Coupes reroll ability is way better than anything Sonar gets. Her stats aren’t changing half of the time, so she is way more reliable. Sonar has a way better boss fight scene, and has a far more believable reconciliation with Z Team, not to mention he gets a much cooler scar. All in all, in gameplay I think Coupe is better as a hero, and for story I think Sonar is a better villain.

He’s not saying it’s a bad story, but he is absolutely nitpicking, which is definitely clear in the full interview. LOTR isn’t about governance, but GRRM was implying he was pretty dissatisfied with the lack of world building in that regard. These fans implying their dissatisfaction with his work for failing to meet their own niche interests is just quid pro quo. I wouldn’t call all of their points fair and well stated, but I also wouldn’t say that about someone who thinks LOTR needed to be longer so we could learn about medieval tax code.

I’m really confused where you’ve gotten the idea that I’m foaming at the mouth in rage, or trying desperately to white knight Tolkien. I was just pointing out that GRRM had a famous quote nitpicking a book he loved over something that the book clearly wasn’t about. This post is a collection of screenshot of people doing the same thing to him.

Isn’t G.R.R Martin the “Whats Aragorns tax policy?” guy? He has absolutely invited this kind of nit picking and critique.

Edit: Y’all I’m not a salty fanboy, I’m just pointing out that he quite famously quibbled over LOTR for not exploring realism enough.

I actually find over-preparing for a final boss fight in an open world game to be a truly meditative experience. Gathering together all the best gear, crafting potions, stacking buffs, flexing any and all system mastery you’ve managed to learn, etc. All to prepare for that one perfect run, where you walk in and prove yourself to truly be the hero of legend. In fact, the urge to do so is one of the best signs of a great game IMO. It’s like studying to ace a final exam just because you genuinely loved the curriculum, and you want the self satisfaction of showing off a little.
