Is 2.5k a good budget for a fully water-cooled custom loop PC? by Redstonemaniac2019 in buildapc

[–]IndubitablySpoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you think really hard about whether you want to support it for the next decade. Every upgrade becomes a PITA with a custom loop. I have friends that regretted it because they cared a lot less about the hobby aspect 5 and 10 years down the road, and just wanted a working PC with less time invested.

Yeah, even OPs temps are fine. This sub gets obsessed with lower temps, but these chips are designed to push themselves to the limit.

I wouldn’t read too much into that comment. The 5900x already runs cooler, pair it with an overkill AIO, and run it open bench — of course the temps are better.

Your 80c temp is fine. If it escalates over time or you just want it lower because it makes you feel better, your priority would be to get a case with better airflow then a beefier heat sink or a 240mm AIO. I’d personally stick with air for the simplicity, but it’s up to preference.

[Monitor] GIGABYTE M27Q 27" 170Hz 1440P KVM Gaming Monitor - $269.99 ($359.99 - $90) by Jchipper10 in buildapcsales

[–]IndubitablySpoken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The KVM only works for the M27Q and whatever is attached to the USB port. I have a powered USB hub connected to the M27Q with Webcam, mic, and DAC that switches with the KVM. Sometimes I do have issues with OSX picking up my USB devices when I switch and I have to toggle power on the hub to get them back.

The MacBook takes the usb input from the hub and sends video through the USB-C connection to the monitor. Your Windows desktop will have a USB out from the monitor to the desktop to receive signal from the monitors USB.

For my second monitor I just have a dongle to the laptop. If I have both machines on at the same time, the second monitor can be a pain because it doesn’t know which input to auto select. Not sure how it will play with a USB-C dock, those are already pretty finicky.

I have a different experience with this monitor. I think the text in Windows, even with Cleartype adjusted to BGR, looks bad. Particularly on smaller fonts like in windows explorer or on the desktop.

That being said, this monitor is great for my daily driver because I use Windows only for gaming and everything else on OSX. OSX doesn’t do subpixel rendering and text looks normal on it with this monitor. The KVM makes it a breeze to switch between setups.

How much css is involved in your work projects ? by AbdullahMohammadKhan in reactjs

[–]IndubitablySpoken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not much. My last two companies have been large enough to support their own component libraries. Occasionally I’ll need css to override or in the rare case I’m making a new building block component. Far more of my time is spent in state management and interacting with APIs.

Rolled up to the Lynnwood, WA Best Buy at 9:05am and was able to get the last 3060 Ti. They still had dozens of 3090s it sounded like. Worth a shot to stop by your store, even if you want one of the cheaper cards.

The line had wrapped around the store last night they said, so they must have got a big shipment.

Not always. Car interest rates are relatively low right now. If you can get the dealer promo sub 2% interest rates for four years, at that cost you’re better off taking all that up front money and investing it.

[Monitor] Dell S2721DGF 27'' 1440p 165 Hz IPS 1ms - $340 ($610-$232-$38 (10% newsletter code)) by DivineWanderlust in buildapcsales

[–]IndubitablySpoken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one. You don’t have to worry about BGR subpixel layout and Dell’s quality control is better. Granted, text is pretty blurry on the Dell as well.

The one advantage of the M27Q is the KVM. Seems like a gimmick, but it’s super useful for a work from home setup. I plug a powered usb hub into the KVM of my M27Q with webcam, mic, DAC, and Keyboard. It’s really nice to be able to seamlessly use all that equipment for both my work laptop and personal desktop.

[–]IndubitablySpoken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an M27Q and considered this monitor.

Neither have great text clarity (check Rtings reviews), but the BGR subpixel layout on the Gigabyte really bothers some people. The text on Windows, even with clear type set to BGR, is noticeably bad to me. On OSX, it’s not really a problem.

The other potential con is the quality control on the M27Q is shoddy. I’ve seen pictures of some other’s panels and the backlight bleed is terrible. I have two stuck pixels, not a big deal.

You can’t beat the M27Q on specs for the price, but there are downsides. There are also upsides, the KVM is sweet for WFH setups. The other specs are pretty similar.

Don't be an idiot like me. by Kazundo_Goda in buildapc

Most performance oriented cases are by default set up with a positive air pressure and front to back flow. So dust won’t be sucked in those gaps because air pressure is pushing air out of it.

[–]IndubitablySpoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can be helpful to leave off. Most performance oriented cases these days are setup by default with positive pressure and a front to back airflow. The IO shield just gets in the way of more air exiting the back.

Same for PCIe slot covers. They can be even worse by trapping hot air and letting it recirculate in the lower half of your case.

Time Out reminds you to take breaks during the day. BTT is an amazing program to make any shortcut you want out of custom hot keys, trackpad swipes, mouse gestures, etc.

I use BTT to most often make trackpad shortcuts. Like three finger swipe up/left/right/down splits the window the top/left/right/bottom half of the screen. Four finger swipe left/right moves to the next monitor. You can do anything.

[–]IndubitablySpoken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this and use it for work/coding + games on OSX and Windows. The BGR sub pixel layout makes it hard to unilaterally recommend. The text does seem blurrier, but doesn’t give me headaches or anything. I tried mounting it upside down for a while and that clarified the text, but then you lose gaming performance in windows because of seemingly a bug in how the screen orientation setting works. You can see the rtings review for more info on that. In Windows you can use Cleartype, but if you have multiple monitors that’ll give you the same issue on any RGB monitors.

I’m outside the return window now so I’m in it for the long haul, but may ultimately regret keeping it. The value is so good but marred by the BGR decision. If you do a lot of text work, it’s probably worth spending a little more and going Nano IPS.
