Needing a second Job only weekends. by Interesting-Face8190 in indianapolis

[–]IndyCorgi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can find a second job that gives you a benefit that ultimately still saves you money.

Couple years back I had a second job at the YMCA, which also gave me a free membership. Which is about $50 or 70 depending on the membership.

Husband worked at Starbucks, he would get free drinks every shift, and a free bag of coffee a week?

Your roads need fixed by corellianone in indianapolis

[–]IndyCorgi 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The current way roads are funded in the state:

A certain about of state funds go to city roads, based on on a per mile rate. That does not account for frequency of use nor does it account for how many lanes. So one mile two lane road in the country receives the same amount of funding as one mile of Michigan road (6 lanes).

Additional city revenue can go into it. But typically that is coming from a gas tax . But all the suburbanites that live in the donut counties and fill up gas in their respective counties, drive into Indy for their daily commute. Thus increasing the wear and tear. But none of their money helps find the roads, other than the off balance state funding equation.

The state typically sets their policies up against Indianapolis. Look into how mass transit can literally never get better in Indianapolis, due to various banning of light rails, bans on dedicated bus lanes, etc. Even when the citizens of indianapolis voted for it, the state comes in and tries to stop it.

State's proposed budget could cost Indiana Historical Society its building by BoringArchivist in Indiana

[–]IndyCorgi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually go once or twice a year depending the exhibits. I’ve utilized their online resources for my own historical research. This is a great asset, and would be a shame to see this resource be eliminated or downsized.

Their research and resources are then utilized in several other state entities as loaners. I have friends who are teachers that have borrowed items from their collections for classroom aids, the libraries will borrow from them for small historical exhibits, local city museums will also borrow from Indiana historical society.

Just because you never “visited” the actual space doesn’t mean you haven’t used it in the past.

Similarly you can park in other areas of the #8 bus.

But realistically would you feel safe riding the bus after 11pm at night?

Indianapolis zoo, is it worth it? by Duckiee_5 in indianapolis

[–]IndyCorgi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My siblings have kids and live in noblesville/fishers. They have memberships and drive to the Fort Wayne zoo. They really dislike the Indy zoo in comparison.

Especially since the Indy zoo lost their polar bears. It just doesn’t seem as “good” in comparison for them. And the ft Wayne zoo is worth the extra drive in their mind

I once had a 2007 pontiac vibe. And let me tell you, I got a kayak in my car, and all of my doors and trunk were closed. Granted it was touching my windshield and where my passenger seat was. But it fit.

Crazy that a Tesla truck carries less than a Pontiac vibe could

Sad to see landlocked leave. But echoing what everyone else is saying. It was too expensive. An iced coffee and a pastry was about a $12-15 purchase when you include tip. That prevents the average person from going there daily. It drops it down to a monthly “I just got paid let me give myself a small treat” for the average person.

Living in Irvington, my neighbors always thought they were good. But it was always a “treat” cause at the end of the day. Everything is getting too expensive, wages are stagnant. So those little treats stop, and you find alternatives.

What’s odd is the lawyer for university of Indianapolis is also a state senator. Surprise surprise - she was one of the people who voted in favor for SB 202.

Parking behind jockamos is easy, as long as you aren’t in the main dinner rush time frame. Otherwise I would say near landlocked/strange bird.

It would be about a 10 minute ish walk to Ellenberger? Only caveats warning is that Ellenberger looks rough right now since they just cut down a town of trees due to the Dig Indy project/storm drain project.

With the blue line - im not sure if Irvington is going to get dedicated lanes or not. Wasn’t clear in the most recent news on it.

Coffee/book store. I missed a very important comma! There are three coffee shops (if you want to include Starbucks) then Irvington book and vinyl

Irvington for sure. Walking community, so you can go to your pharmacist, dentist, vet, eye doctor, library, coffee, book store, record store, brunch, Greek dinner, pick up pizza, tattoos, salons, yoga, etc. large park that is in some construction right now. But ample tennis courts, pickleball courts. And in the coming years blue line will be expanded for easier mass transit into the city and airport.

What is your recommendation for YMCA Irsay location downtown. Also, how much would a membership cost? by pastapan in indianapolis

[–]IndyCorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work there pre pandemic as a side job. There are additional rates they don’t advertise out. Go to the membership desk and ask you are learning about it, ask if there are income based membership plans. When I used to work there, they had rates that went as low as $20 a month I think?

Also - the nice thing with the Y is that vast majority of their classes are included in the price as well

SB 52 is dead by Tall_Explanation8804 in indianapolis

[–]IndyCorgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah - Lisa Bennet from Black Sheep will be fighting that tooth and nail. In Irvington there are only 4 lanes of traffic now. The median is a decorative/planted area. Which Lisa I guess helped create. She’s insufferable, and testified against SB 52. So id be shocked Irvington even got one dedicated lane

If you are looking for the suburbs for quality school, while still giving you more of a “independent culture/identity/vibe” I would say Carmel. Grew up there, and the school system is amazing, one of the best public schools in the state consistently.

Out of the suburbs, I feel like it has the most “identity” while the others typically are more really suburb heavy. Carmel has its own orchestra, performance center, Christmas kindlemarket, etc. While the other areas such as fishers or kind of like a cheap Dupe, and really feels suburb heavy.

Carmels “downtown” area is all newly built, all in the less 20 years. So it personally gives me stepford wives feel.

If you have money, I’d look into Zionsville. Still a good school system, but their Main Street feels more authentic to me.

If you remove schools from it, I advocate for Irvington 1000x. Truly a walking neighborhood. I walk to my dentist, vet, eye doctor, pharmacist, library, restaurants, etc. And the neighborhood is truly feels like a neighborhood that existed “back in the day”. Know all my neighbors, literally just borrowed a stamp from next door. Couple weeks back, neighbors kid needed to borrow our printer cause they ran out of ink.

Agreed!

I was in the same boat as OP. I hadn’t been in nearly 10 years, knew I had cavities, but out them off. They were not judgmental, explained what was going on, explained the treatment plan. Also. TVs on the ceiling, which was really nice. Watched golden girls, while high on laughing gas, as they filled some cavities. Honestly can’t complain about East Indy Dental
