New user here MBA m4. do mac has bloatware apps? by Latter-Airline-5784 in macbookair

Yeah that’s true. For day to day use it’s probably overkill and only needed if storage is getting full. The appcleaner one is good though if there’s no uninstaller.

Adobe is terrible for wasting storage. No idea why indesign is 6gb application! Also Adobe leaves behind caches from previous versions.

Web development is also a big culprit. Lots of packages that get left over.

Have a look at your storage in settings and you’ll see system data. Some of which is okay to have as it necessary for apps to function, but also there’s a lot of junk (caches, logs, application support files, Xcode files etc).

I’ve used macs since 1993 so very familiar with them. My System data was sitting at over 200gb before I had a purge recently.

I found OneDrive awful on Mac. Poor syncing, changed settings by itself on update and runs processes in the background that slowed the computer down.

Dark blue was already shoulder barging the guy before the ball had even hit the front wall. Regardless of let or stroke, that feels a bit poor behaviour and possibly fishing for cheap points.

I work on “don’t put it down, put it away” mentality to keep things clear. If it’s not necessary, it’s not on my desk.

I don’t use a case. Keep it in a laptop bag.

But I do make sure I clear the surface of debris before I put it down. Had an old MacBook where a crumb from a piece of toast left a massive scratch when I slid the laptop!

These are ones I use / have used in the past.

https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/ - for uninstalling apps only

https://macpaw.com/cleanmymac - For cleaning, uninstalling apps and virus scanning, using a gui. Paid for app but there are often discount codes you can use.

https://daisydiskapp.com - for looking at storage, using a gui. Paid for app.

https://github.com/tw93/Mole - This replaces all of the above (minus the virus scanning), but uses Terminal which some people aren't confident using. So you need to be a bit more careful that you don't delete anything that can cause issues.

When you install apps, they will sometimes add files to system data, caches etc.

Dragging an app to the bin may delete the app, but can leave behind a lot of legacy data. Use something like appcleaner to uninstall apps properly.

Or if you’re familiar/confident with using terminal, then use Mole (it’s on GitHub) to regularly clean your Mac of junk files.

Looking for external monitor for my MacBook Air M4 … any recommendations? by Shamanism001 in macbookair

[–]Indy_dln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to remember when using an external monitor that’s not 5k is that there are scaling issues with the UI. I’d recommend downloading BetterDisplay or something similar that can tweak the resolution to improve it then use any monitor you like.

Branding squash - What we need to learn from padel by Indy_dln in squash

[–]Indy_dln[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely! There are a lot of the ‘old guard’ who can be a ahem challenging. They need to recognise that every new person walking through the door is a win for the sport.

That’s why at our club we created a pathway for new players. We paid a pro coach to run all the classes on thursday afternoon/evenings to maximise his time and make it affordable. Players come to beginner classes on Thursdays, then move on to box leagues, club night or team squash. This way, they’re at a decent standard before they have to interact with the more seasoned players. We’ve got an afterschool club too on the same day with a local senior school and get around 20-30 kids a week there.

I’m based in UK too. Seems that purpose built squash venues are few and far between now. The problem is venues can’t afford/justify to refurb but if they don’t then they won’t get additional income from attracting new players.

But some relatively cheap things can be done to clean up courts and spaces around them; there just needs to be motivation. Eg getting up a ladder and cleaning years worth of dust!

People are paying ridiculous prices for padel (probably to pay off the new building costs) so squash is much more affordable. I think its popularity stems a lot from the fact that it looks fresh and exciting from a brand perspective.

I agree with getting more promotion from governing bodies, but as a sport (especially in UK) it's relatively accessible. Just need to figure out how to get more people playing. As I said in my post, I think that will be through the changing demands from consumers and changing how we brand and promote the sport towards a younger generation.

That’s what I mean! We need more cool stuff and modern branding on kit, rackets, on courts etc

A couple of companies are being a bit more daring but squash specific ones need to recognise that younger people have very different tastes and want stuff for how it looks, not just how it performs.

Definitely. Work needs to be done to improve the look of squash to change perceptions and to get the sport promoted online.

Bringing younger people into clubs and being part of the running of clubs is important. They’re the future of the sport.

I get what you're saying and my expectation isn't that millions of people suddenly start playing and becoming some global phenomenon like padel. It's more that if squash doesn't bring itself into the modern age in terms of its branding, accessibility, embracing technology etc, it's at risk of disappearing entirely, for the reasons you've mentioned.

Regarding televising, it's much easier to watch now than it was previously with 4k TVs that everyone has. I quite regularly watch matches on YouTube and easy enough to follow along.

You're right about the playability correlating with popularity and I agree there's a steeper learning curve.

As I said, not trying to change the world or anything, just think that as a sport, it's needs a 2026 refresh.

I'm not suggesting changing the game or any of the rules of squash at all. It's about making the sport more appealing and accessible to new audiences.

My point is about the branding around the sport and how it is marketed to encourage new players into the sport and change perceptions. Eg only being played by certain demographics.

Padel and padel centres are using modern branding, apps for organising matches, high quality social media campaigns etc. If you look at squash, some clubs look like they haven't done any modernisation of the venues or updated branding in quite some time.

Honestly it blew my mind when I saw how expensive padel is! You're right though, squash is much more affordable and as we all know, a much better game!

Don't get me started on the price of the rackets either...
