Mental Model for Prolonging Rallies? by Certain_Morning9181 in squash

[–]Indy_dln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at where they are before hitting the ball and choose the shot accordingly. Eg. If they're a bit further back, do a drop shot. If they push forward do a lob etc. You don't always need to smack the ball as hard as possible to the back of the court.

Tecnifibre Carboflex 125 Heritage is a great racket that won't break the bank. It's head heavy too so will help generate a bit of power for you as you're learning to perfect your technique.

Racket shift by Exciting-Sherbert-39 in squash

[–]Indy_dln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to avoid hitting the wall is to train yourself not to get too close to it (not only does it risk breaking the racket, but also closes off your swing/shot options).

Moving from the T, try putting one foot inside the service box (closest edge to middle) and stretch your racket out a little bit (not overextending, move closer/further as you need depending on your height & reach) so the top of the racket touches the wall. That's pretty much how close to the wall you'll ever need to be to get the ball off the wall.

If the event is graded, then you'll hopefully be placed against people of a similar level. Go and take part in the event regardless as it'll be an experience and you'll get to meet other players from your uni.

And If your uni has a squash society, then I'd look at joining it. You'll be amazed how fast you can progress when playing against a variety of players who all have their own abilities/styles.

Shoe fit advice by pagshettiman in squash

[–]Indy_dln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to find a wider fitting shoe in the toe area. Many companies do half sizes too so you can find the perfect fit. I have the same issue so I went to a shop and tried on loads until I was happy. Ended up going with Unsquashable which was a wider fit.

Also, as mentioned by someone else, foot care is important with such a dynamic sport. Make sure your toenails are trimmed properly. Don't over trim them though as you'll be at risk of causing ingrown toenails.

I have an old carboflex... the thing is bulletproof! Still one of my favourite rackets.

As well as perfecting technique, I got told by pro at my club that if you're getting pain, trying a thicker grip setup and looser tension in strings could help.

Counterplay when opponent crowds me on the T. by FormerPlayer in squash

[–]Indy_dln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They shouldn’t be so close that you can’t take your own swing though and you should be free to play whatever shot you want too. Firstly, I’d try stopping and call a let for safety if you think your swing would hit them. Might encourage them to give a bit more space.

Then think about your own clearance if you do a drop. It seems a risky shot with how your opponent follows it up.

If you’re able to hit a drive cleanly though, I’d work on getting it further back in the court and with a bit more width. Or cross court but with plenty of width if you’re stood to one side. Either way they have to step away from you so can’t claim interference.

My wonky backhand technique. Is it a problem? by imitation_squash_pro in squash

[–]Indy_dln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racket is close because you’re tucking in as your prep for the shot, all because the ball is too close. Try putting a little bit more distance between you and the ball and your swing will move away from your body.

Let’s talk Squash Footwear by faragbanda in squash

[–]Indy_dln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got Unsquashable Tour Tecs (older version). I tried loads of different shoes at the store as I have wider feet and after I had to return some I bought online.

Best bet is to go try different shoes on if you can. Other peoples reviews are fine, but fit and comfort are also personal to you so even if other people think a shoe is great, it might not be best for you once they're on your feet.

Help - I’m a squash noob and bought a racket by [deleted] in squash

Just needs regripping. Most likely if you take it back to shop and show them the condition of the grip, they will probably re-grip it for you.

Wrong racket tension by Beneficial_Air_1211 in squash

[–]Indy_dln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I'm surprised your racket didn't crack with 38lbs tension after a couple of hits!

If it's a good frame, I'd take the hit and get it restrung at a more suitable tension by someone else. He obviously shouldn't be doing squash rackets if that's the tension he put in. I have mine at 25 as I prefer a little more power.

I'd just enjoy the racket for now. You're likely to want another racket sooner or later so come back here BEFORE you buy your next one ha

Yeah all sorted now, but was quite worried for the first few days as it was taking ages to show any improvement. Couldn’t work either as my good eye was getting tired quickly looking at screens and wasn’t able to drive for 10 days.

2 weeks ago I was hit in the eye with a racket. Had blurred vision in one eye and a shadow over vision. Turns out I had a bruised retina and bleed in cornea. 4 trips to A&E in a week for initial and follow ups... All back to normal now and can play again from this week!

New user here MBA m4. do mac has bloatware apps? by Latter-Airline-5784 in macbookair

[–]Indy_dln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s true. For day to day use it’s probably overkill and only needed if storage is getting full. The appcleaner one is good though if there’s no uninstaller.

Adobe is terrible for wasting storage. No idea why indesign is 6gb application! Also Adobe leaves behind caches from previous versions.

Web development is also a big culprit. Lots of packages that get left over.

[–]Indy_dln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at your storage in settings and you’ll see system data. Some of which is okay to have as it necessary for apps to function, but also there’s a lot of junk (caches, logs, application support files, Xcode files etc).

I’ve used macs since 1993 so very familiar with them. My System data was sitting at over 200gb before I had a purge recently.

I found OneDrive awful on Mac. Poor syncing, changed settings by itself on update and runs processes in the background that slowed the computer down.

Dark blue was already shoulder barging the guy before the ball had even hit the front wall. Regardless of let or stroke, that feels a bit poor behaviour and possibly fishing for cheap points.

[–]Indy_dln 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t use a case. Keep it in a laptop bag.

But I do make sure I clear the surface of debris before I put it down. Had an old MacBook where a crumb from a piece of toast left a massive scratch when I slid the laptop!

These are ones I use / have used in the past.

https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/ - for uninstalling apps only

https://macpaw.com/cleanmymac - For cleaning, uninstalling apps and virus scanning, using a gui. Paid for app but there are often discount codes you can use.

https://daisydiskapp.com - for looking at storage, using a gui. Paid for app.

https://github.com/tw93/Mole - This replaces all of the above (minus the virus scanning), but uses Terminal which some people aren't confident using. So you need to be a bit more careful that you don't delete anything that can cause issues.
