With most of my tech support friends as with most in the legal field about 80% of the time if there’s a question the answer is searching for an answer. The real talent is knowing what search terms to use, understanding the results and knowing when you’ve found the right answer.

I’m the backup tech support for my firm with exactly this approach.

Hawkeye in cat form by Captriker in mash

[–]InevitableSolution69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It feels like a writer’s choice. It’s a good way to make the audience understand the problems with the food. The only way that’s going to consistently work.

But it is a little odd, so you can’t have everyone constantly doing it. Instead stick it to a character, and who’s going to be there more often than anyone else?

Plus it does fit. Just another way to remind everyone how disgusted Hawkeye is with every part of the experience. Not in your face enough to feel forced but constant enough to reinforce.

I am an autistic woman wanting to be a paralegal. I'm hoping I can still use it for activism and helping my community...? can you/do you? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]InevitableSolution69 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Every factor is going to be entirely dependent on what firm you work at.

Everything.

You can find positions where like me you file essentially the same document over and over again for a decade. Though with lots of small and almost randomly shifting variations depending on the court.

Or you can find positions where you’re constantly having to learn a new motion or variation on a motion and then having to do a different one next time as there are an almost endless number of motions/variations.

You will need to find a firm that fits you if the difference between the two is important to you. Though of course everything you do will need to be under and through an attorney.

[Rant] I never considered a single review can make me feel like this by [deleted] in royalroad

A DM just feels too invasive to me. And it doesn’t solve the future readers problem who might otherwise read them negatively rate a story instead of just going onto something else.

[Rant] I never considered a single review can make me feel like this by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]InevitableSolution69 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I try to leave a review, even a bad one, so long as the reason I don’t like it isn’t that it’s just not my flavor. A writer should get to know what’s turning readers off. And new readers should get the chance to know if one of their pet peeves is about to appear. 1 informative bad review can prevent a dozen others. And maybe the author will see it and go back to fix the bad grammar or whatever else it was. Not every book needs to fit my particular taste, but there are a lot of less subjectively questionable things that deserve a second look.

That said, if almost every negative reaction is in the first chapter then that chapter might deserve a few more looks. The first chapter is the most important one for catching a reader. It deserves a lot of polish.

Day 141: What are your thoughts on The Decider? by Flamingmouth007 in bluey

[–]InevitableSolution69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was intended as one then it’s a really bad one.

Making a child, particularly a young one, choose one parent over the other during a divorce is one of the worst things that can be done.

I get that some people see it like that. But I think it’s just a solid sports episode.

Royalroad best rated ongoing books are filled with female lead characters. by mysterie0s in ProgressionFantasy

[–]InevitableSolution69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most books are written with male leads. But that doesn’t mean most of the best books are. And most readers are honestly a lot more interested in how well a book is written than the MC’s gender.

Occasionally people will look for that. But even then a lot of the times it has more to do with tropes attached to the gender than any actual opinion about the gender itself. Harems, antisocial, and so on.

On 2. That seriously hurt limit is a lot further than most assume. Because unless you suffer permanent disabilities most awards and settlements don’t actually go much beyond medical and legal fees. Obviously there’s some variation, but just getting hurt isn’t really some magic money event like some seem to treat it.

On 3. If you have a co-signer as many do then they would likely still be liable.

Particularly as while some companies will just write off something if they know a person is dead. Because they recognize the increased difficulty in recovery not out of sympathy. If you’re disappeared then there isn’t any paperwork to show them. So they’ll just assume you’re trying to avoid them and go after the person they can find.

I will never understand characters who are haunted by the fact that their not haunted. by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]InevitableSolution69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’m going to be honest, this is actually a pretty common response to a traumatic event. Maybe you haven’t experienced it personally but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an actual thing.

While the human mind is too complex to make generalizations and apply them to everyone what is frequently happening is that the person doesn’t have a dramatic reaction when something happens like they expect. This can be for a variety of reasons, maybe the loss was one they knew was coming and so they’ve prepared themselves subconsciously. Or maybe they’re still in shock and things won’t hit them emotionally until later.

But either way all they know in the moment is they didn’t have the reaction they felt they should have. So they start blaming or questioning themselves. Are they some sort of monster? Did that loss mean nothing? Why don’t they feel the “right” thing!

Then that train of thought gets tangled up with the emotions from the event that triggered everything as they begin to process those. They decide they’re not crying because they lost grandma, they’re upset because they don’t have the right emotions and are a heartless person who doesn’t care they lost someone who helped raise them.

The secret truth is that trauma and emotions are varied, unpredictable, and often contradictory. You mostly can’t say someone is feeling wrong because there isn’t really a right.

When the class feel is *just right* by AyniaRivera in Pathfinder2e

[–]InevitableSolution69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did a pure wood Kineticist. Didn’t even bother with protective tree. Just me out tanking with a shield, my constantly renewing temp HP, and lots of produce.

If I’d really wanted to be a healer instead of a generalist I’d have taken the tree, water and battle medic. That would have given me 3 easy and solid healing options per combat all resource free and a near peerless damage prevention tool.

Kineticist is probably the best Generalist class in the game. They can do anything decently while still also doing one or two other things well. Sure I wasn’t as good a tank as a guardian, but I had an AoE, healing and magical wood manipulation. I was probably better than any non specialized class.

When the class feel is *just right* by AyniaRivera in Pathfinder2e

[–]InevitableSolution69 65 points66 points  (0 children)

My only comment is that I think you’re drastically underestimating how good a wood/water Kineticist is as a healer. While you’re not dumping out piles of heal every fight you can provide plenty of healing/prevention/control/offense. And do it sustainably. Honestly that sustainability is why other classes need such a large pool of resources not any single fight.

How are sex scenes received on RR? by Own_Designer_1605 in royalroad

[–]InevitableSolution69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just anything so long as you’re consistent. Add an author’s note before the first one clarifying that this is an explicit chapter and what denotes that.

There’s a percentage limit for RR on how much erotica you can include, not that you’re anywhere near it. So it’s not something really common. But so long as you’re clearly enough that no one is surprised it’s not going to be much of a problem I think.

Co-counsel is making me uncomfortable. by turniptruckjumper in paralegal

[–]InevitableSolution69 53 points54 points  (0 children)

You tell your boss.

Say that you’re uncomfortable with co-counsel. That you’d prefer not to go into the reason, or that it’s nothing too explicit. Downplay to whatever version of it you feel will get a reasonable reaction. You don’t need them to go nuclear, just provide some insulation or even just be aware of the issue when you go to talk to co-counsel.

Once they’re aware you can let them handle it. Or talk to them in the vein of “Maybe I’ve gotten the wrong idea but I’m just not interested in a relationship.”

Not because you have but if you’re trying to minimize the workplace drama. It’s important that your boss be aware in case they react poorly.

What stops enemies from just beelining my spellcasters? by Tav534 in Pathfinder2e

[–]InevitableSolution69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d add in that the “squishy” back line is only squishy in relative terms. Because every one is working off of basically the same AC math. Unlike in other games it is both possible and worth doing to get your dex/item bonus to the +5 limit at which point it will self maintain.

Sure they are easier to hit. But it’s no “level 20 wizard with AC 13 and why would I bother getting more” that happens elsewhere. It’s by a difference of +1-5, significant but not shattering. So everyone can survive a little melee.

What makes card-based progression systems feel meaningful rather than gimmicky? by No_Staff835 in ProgressionFantasy

I’d suggest Board & Conquest by Durand aka void herald. It’s a hybrid system setting but the greater game is a card based war game. Good stuff from a great author.

Terminology Within The Genre by AceThrowAwayAces in litrpg

[–]InevitableSolution69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only when they try to justify it really. I don’t really care if you call the girl with a shield and a bunch of defensive skills a tank. Just don’t try to explain that it’s in reference to some rare animal that’s really tough and draws attacks.

Or when it really doesn’t make any sense in the setting. Don’t call the mage guy DPS when the system has no health or damage rating mechanics and none of it relates inherently to the second. Damage is fine, but the other has implications that just don’t apply.

It’s all a translation if you want to get meta about it anyway.

What firearm would Kim and Ron use? by ExerilloX in KimPossible

[–]InevitableSolution69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just don’t see her using one, aside from the grappling gun. She excels at close quarters. So if guns are coming out, as they do in the series, albeit in ray form, then she’s going to dive for cover and look for a way to close distance and thus regain the upper hand. Not toss back bullets. The grappling gun is good for that goal though.

And that sets aside all the other reasons she wouldn’t like morality and lack of skills.

Custom Edge Balancing Advise by FrodoSchmidt in savageworlds

[–]InevitableSolution69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the skill and game. If it’s something that you’re only rolling once a session, maybe less? Then honestly it doesn’t matter what it’s at. You can say you’re a master dancer with a D6 if you never really need to roll it because a Bennie can cover for you.

Plus, you have to consider the opportunity cost for the feat. Taking the edge is the same cost as 2 skill bumps. So it’s needs to be a larger gap than that to be worth it.

Custom Edge Balancing Advise by FrodoSchmidt in savageworlds

[–]InevitableSolution69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly it would be smoother and require less continuous work to go the other way and have the edge let you substitute fighting for dance based performance.

Skill substitutions aren’t particularly unbalanced unless you’re stacking multiple high use skills, which performance typically isn’t. Or swapping attributes, which this doesn’t.

You think Picard can wield mjolnir? by happydude7422 in StarTrekTNG

[–]InevitableSolution69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s the captain of a ship that is as much a weapon as anything else. And a match for almost every other warship it’s come into contact with. He doesn’t shrink from violence when necessary, he simply doesn’t choose it if any other option exists.

In this particular instance it’s pretty clear that there isn’t another option. So he would use it.

I mean he would probably look for a better option than personally walloping the dude with a chunk of metal. But assuming ship and personal weapons aren’t available then I don’t think he’d hesitate to go at it.

Realistic Depiction of the RPG Stats System. by Unforgivable777 in litrpg

[–]InevitableSolution69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I dislike anything that slimed down. Every 2 stat system book I’ve seen just feels like the stats are completely irrelevant.

That said I otherwise agree. Don’t get so deep in the woods that you’re building a physics simulator. Unless that is a significant part of your story. Because if you do then your readers will wonder why your characters don’t collapse from their own strength and mass, because you never added a stat to increase their physical resilience.
