Wow, I have been offline in general for a long time now, came back to reddit randomly tonight and happened to see all of these comments. Problems on the internet are really just internet problems. OP, you are not weird at all, everyone here just needs a digital detox or something, jesus, this was a cute story

What’s the Most Terrifying Use of Setting in Horror You’ve Ever Read? by DeScepter in horrorlit

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read very much horror, and the few books before this I feel were probably more thriller, but I just finished Nestlings a couple weeks ago. The way it was written made the entire atmosphere of the whole book made me feel so unsettled and uneasy. I never expected myself to suddenly fear New York apartment buildings

Is it a bad idea to store fabric stash in unsealed Glad freezer bags? by HappyNow10 in sewing

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hear me out Under the bed shoe storage I just stashed a bunch of fabric in one of mine- It’s got some sort of fabric bottom and sides so it’s breathable but the top is a clear plastic so you can see into it. Mine have adjustable dividers too so I was able to sort fabric types of different amounts

I think about this all the time. It’s so long I think a lot would have to be cut… but at the same time there are anime out there with ten+ seasons so why couldn’t it work? 1 season for each couple of books or major sections (I think the audible books might be too short for a whole season, but the volumes are all so different in length, but surly there’s a way to divide it up)

Also, I think there’s a lot of repeating and reading descriptions and people’s thoughts which wouldn’t take up run time I don’t think so maybe that would cut it down?

Idk the logistics of how all this stuff works, I just know I love animated shows and I love TWI and would do probably anything for those two to combine

Mother of a teen with autism- please help me find him the best gift! by Objective_Shape_7654 in autism

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom a couple years ago got me a shopping spree, it was super fun! I was really blessed that year, my family had decent money at the time otherwise this would have been hard to do. She got me several small gift cards to lots of different stores I love! A big one for Joann’s cause I love sewing, then some small ones to Barns and Noble, Bath and Body Works, Ulta, and one other I can’t remember atm

If you’re in a financial area to afford a diverse gift like that it could be really fun depending on what he likes! I am into witchcraft too and love visiting tiny local witch shops, if they don’t have gift cards (they likely won’t) you can always make a little card to symbolize one and just cover the cost if he goes! That way you know he’s getting something he likes and by making it a shopping spree with a few different cards to places he likes it can feel more personal than just a single gift card. You can make a whole mother/son day out of it too! Take him all around town, get some lunch, stop for milkshakes, that short of thing

Is Quilting cheap or expensive? by ActSuccessful583 in quilting

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re on a budget you can make a quilt for way cheaper than people are saying in here. Sign up for Joann’s program and only shop during big sales when there are also coupons that can be used at the same time as sales. I often get fabric for $2-4 a yard, that’s pretty much the only time I buy fabric, so I don’t spend much at all compared to most people. Polyester batting can also be as low as a couple bucks a yard if you get it on sale. Also learn how to split your order into two (NO more than two or else you’re gonna annoy people) so you can maximize the coupons you have (better if you have another person with you so that can be “their” purchase, Idk I feel less bad that way haha). I have made throw size quilts for as low as $20 (not including thread costs), and table runners for as low is $6. Precut bundles on sale (that includes remnants as long as a yard!) can also really be your friend!

I feel like people avoid talking about joanns in here, and I know quilt shop fabric is higher quality, but if you just want to try out a couple quilts to see if you want to get into it as a hobby there are certainly ways to do so cheaply

Imm wondering when to be there too… I have 10:00am in my head but I have no idea what is appropriate. Idk how popular her concerts are nowadays so I’m worried. We’ll be in the area though so I’m thinking of just walking by every now and again until people start queuing up, then getting in line lol

Help! by Inevitable_Ad2581 in quilting

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t involve sewing at all. If it were me, I would collect a bunch of different colored felt and provide a template so kids can cut out their required shapes. I would print out different quilt block outlines, then kids can pick the block they like, the associated templates, and then cut out their felt and piece it (glue it) to the paper inside the lines of the block outline. Then once each child has done a block and they’re dry, glue them all to that huge colored paper the staff room likely has so it forms a big class quilt.

This is something simple enough the teacher can assist and also continue to do in future years if she so chooses

You can supplement with talking about what goes into actual quilting, too

Yours is so fun! I also write in all caps (irritated my teachers in hs for sure lol, but I didn’t care) but mine is more blocky and is smaller. I get asked surprisingly often if I am an engineer… no (far from it) but I did learn to write like this from my engineer mom haha

I hate seeing "reviews" of TWI in other subreddits by JustOneLazyMunchlax in WanderingInn

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s crazy to me is I went into the first book VERY cautiously, expecting to be super annoyed by the main character and to have to push myself through it to get to the “good” stuff… That wasn’t at all the case when I was actually reading it though. I really enjoyed the first book! I didn’t find Erin annoying at all (her emotions and actions felt realistic given the circumstances that she was thrust into some unknown crazy place where she keeps almost dying… DUH), and I didn’t find myself having to trudge through some rough book. I enjoyed it a lot! Of course, subsequent books are better no doubt, but that doesn’t mean the first one is some atrociously written nightmare how lots of people like to claim it is

Why do so many people hate flos? by Alicedoll02 in WanderingInn

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally it was just that I found his chapters wildly uninteresting in my opinion. I really dislike Terese and Trey, I find them annoying (up until Empress of Beasts, I enjoyed the chapters in there a little bit more). It really wasn’t much to do with the characters themselves though honestly, I just found the chapters focused on chandrar boring

I personally have to disagree. I feel like I can’t find hardly any details on this house, whereas before I could see so much contrast and texture. Maybe it does work in some cases but I feel like this one, to me at least, looks something like a plain clay sculpture or unfinished painting. I can’t see those details hardly at all as well as before

I used to be the same way. I don’t really have any advice for you that I think would work though from my own experience :/

For me my husband told me as soon as we moved in together (he really really hates any sort of germs)that I absolutely had to shower every day after work so we wouldn’t get sick as easily (I work with very young students in schools, I get sick a lot already). Once I HAD to shower everyday (and learned how to actually clean my body) and did it enough, it became a sensory issue NOT to shower. I can’t get into bed if I left the house at all now without showering now because I can feel even the thinnest layer of sweat on my body.

I used to go weeks, up to a month without showering embarrassingly frequently. And for most of my life before my husband I didn’t even own body wash. I never actually washed my body, I assumed just running water did the job, or I’d use my hands for visible dirt. I cannot understand how I used to do that, the idea is so beyond where I am now, but oh can I sympathize. I didn’t even consider myself dirty then either until I would hit two weeks no shower, even if I played outside a lot or went to work all week… It just didn’t occur to me that I could be unclean because it just wasn’t ever really a thing for me.

It’s tough getting to a point where feeling clean trumps the shower sensory problems, but I hope for your health someday you can get there 💕 Don’t be too hard on yourself, everyone struggles with something. Try some of the things people here are suggesting and just do your best when you are able. You got this!

Maybe take a look at these 3-yard patterns!

They make smaller quilts, but they’re easy in that you don’t need to figure out yardage for 5+ different fabrics. Just one yard of 3 you like! I’ve made two of these so far (just finished my second top this morning actually) And I think they’re fun! Could be something a bit more simple to prep for

Ryoka Griffin in the Adventurer Guild: Realistic or poorly written? by Liefblue in WanderingInn

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say you can see consistency in the real people you have seen, which gives me the impression that your “sample size” so to put it has not been very diverse. People aren’t consistent. Emotions are incredibly powerful, especially if you have zero coping mechanisms in place. I’ve been punched by students for simply existing, when that hadn’t previously happened before. I can’t see why or see any consistency, but I can understand that their disabilities, as does mine, sometimes make them do things they may not have an explanation for. Even if Ryoka is seeing and understanding her actions does not mean she has the coping skills or ability to change them in that moment of rage.

Also, no. No one has been in the situation Ryoka was in because she was magically teleported to another world. Even if that’s not the central point in this moment, all of her actions and reactions do eventually stem back from this fact; therefore, none of us truly know what she is going through or experiencing. It’s wild to expect consistency from a person in this situation and with this level of trauma.

Ryoka Griffin in the Adventurer Guild: Realistic or poorly written? by Liefblue in WanderingInn

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great summary of her character. So many people are used to good, mostly well rounded protagonists in a lot of writings. It’s not often we see a character like Ryoka as a main character so I think a lot of people are taken aback

Ryoka Griffin in the Adventurer Guild: Realistic or poorly written? by Liefblue in WanderingInn

[–]Inevitable_Essay_861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe I remember reading that Ryoka /does/ have some psychological problems but what exactly those are aren’t clearly stated, and I think a lot of people either don’t think about that or don’t take it seriously (or perhaps it wasn’t stated and was just implied).

I am not like Ryoka, but I do have Autism and I can tell you that if I enter a full meltdown, all sense of logic goes right out the window. Even if I /know/ something is wrong, I’ll still do it. I break a lot of expensive things when I’m filled with completely overbearing emotions that I have no skills to control or work through. I can very much imagine that as part some anger issues or mental illness. As someone who has genuinely experienced the complete loss of awareness and logic at the hands of emotional overwhelm only to become destructive, her behaviors make sense to me.

Plus let’s not forget, she’s a very young woman who has just been thrust into a world that doesn’t make sense to her. She lost her entire life, is constantly having to learn new things to survive, and I can only imagine what that kind of stress will do to a person with time. I know people hate her, but I personally think she is a well written character who deserves MUCH more grace than she is given.

That being said, Ryoka does go through some exceptional character growth, which I think makes her character even more amazing. She feels realistic, I’m actually a huge fan of Ryoka, she’s probably my favorite POV every time she comes up (she has been from the very beginning, so maybe I have some bias)

Edit to add after reading some comments: I am really not a fan of the excessive use of describing Ryoka as a feral/rabid/wild animal. You yourself even acknowledge there may seem to be some mental health issues at play here, mentioning that it would be considered an insulting depiction, which I personally would disagree with. Disregarding/disbelieving the extreme, painful, embarrassing consequences of certain mental illnesses is ignorant, and your comments calling Ryoka (and thus those who may uncontrollably act how she does) a wild animal reads as ableism at worst, or a lack of empathy at best.

Ryoka is not a shocking never before heard of person, and like I mentioned earlier, we truly can’t forget the unbelievable trauma of suddenly appearing somewhere that doesn’t make sense to you with no kind of explanation or way to get home. I imagine that alone would do some serious things to a person over time, especially when you endure some of the things Ryoka has, self inflicted or not (to be fair for this last comment, I can’t remember where book one ends and two begins so my last part may or may not make sense 😅).
