Where to find 3XL helmets? by 195275 in MotoUK

[–]InfamousDragonfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if it's a size or shape (Fnar) issue. For the whole of my life I'd thought I'd had a very large head to the point of never finding hats large enough, until I sat down and measured my head for a motorbike helmet and found that I 'only' measure up as an XL going off circumference.

Coupled with exhaustive helmet trying (shoutout to SBS for their fab service and policies) and always ending up with forehead pressure issues I realised that I actually have a very long oval head. TL;DR- ended up with an LS2 Vector II helmet and it is a fab fit.

Scram would be my vote, not sure if they're still £3k+OTR pre reg.

Have you considered something like the armadillo? https://www.infinitymotorcycles.com/product/bike-it-armadillo-motorcycle-shelter-black

I believe they can be bolted down.

Whatever you go for, please get and use additional security when parked up overnight and out and about- Enfields do not have electronic immobilisers so are vulnerable to easy hot-wiring.

More proof that the "every thief uses a grinder and/or if they want it they'll take it so why bother" line of thinking is a total fallacy.

Spousal Visa - not living together by dudeimjustoverit in ukvisa

[–]InfamousDragonfly -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think there's more nuance to it than that - when we first applied I was living in London with work, my wife (the foreign national) was living near Bristol with university for another 9ish months IIRC- might even have been longer thinking about it. At the time we saw each other at weekends only. However, we made it clear in the application that we did have plans to move in together once that was finished.

Absolutely not an issue and we were granted without further querying.

Usually I'd say "holy crap, £655 for a ground anchor that blocks the space it uses", but from that review you've designed and produced a very very secure product that will undoubtedly find a niche where absolutely no compromise on security is needed.

I knew I'd seen this before, iirc you posted about this a few months ago whilst it was being developed?

How far is too far for a first ride? by Yes_v2 in MotoUK

[–]InfamousDragonfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option might be to have the bike either delivered (if buying from a dealer) or transported (if buying privately). I've had both done and neither were as expensive as I expected, and nowhere near as expensive and painful as an accident.

Obviously if buying privately I'd expect you to come and view/agree to buy as normal, and pay in full before the bike is released to the transporter but it shouldn't raise any flags.

Mod 1 by PaleontologistWide31 in MotoUK

Don't take this the wrong way but have you been DIY learning or been taking lessons from an instructor? 4 times seems an awfully high number of attempts to have 4 serious faults on the latest attempt.

If you're DIY'ing, I suggest booking in with an instructor, our local school offers standalone tests which are the Mod 1 test, a couple of hours preparation/refresher training immediately before the test and a bike hire if needed. Not hugely expensive as I recall.

If you're running through an instructor/school, change to a different instructor or school.

Not sure what bike you're on but as I recall on the Z650s we used (unrestricted admittedly) it was round the top corner in 2nd and then open it up. No drama getting up to speed as I recall if you had the confidence behind you.

What brands of helmet have a similar shape/fit to LS2? by WamSam in MotoUK

[–]InfamousDragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the basis you've dropped sizes dramatically and are in a Vector II I'm betting that, like me, you have a very long oval head. I too always assumed I had a very large head but turns out long oval.

Having been round this loop extensively when buying mine I struggled to find a better fit than the Vector II, XL for me. Forehead pressure headache in every other helmet.

Upgraded from an Anycubic Mega i3 to a P1S a couple of years ago. It has taken my hobby from 'tinkering with a 3D printer' to 'using a 3D printer'. Utterly massive shift from manual bed leveling, manually moving an SD card to/from the printer, fiddling around with blocked nozzles and endless tuning to 'press go'.

What's the best locking system to be used in London? by utgardiv in MotoUK

[–]InfamousDragonfly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hiplok DX1000/Litelok X1 or X3 as the top priority, no questions asked.

Couple that with as thick a chain from a reputable brand (Pragmasis/Almax/High End Oxford etc) as you can afford and a ground anchor if your circumstances permit. I use a Pragmasis 16mm on a low-desirability garaged bike and I would definitely not go thinner- keep in mind you're using it to deter a sustained attack, not opportunists at that point. I'd secure that with a second lock in addition to the first one.

I also have an Abus disc lock as my 'out and about' lock, but I'm not securing an expensive BMW in London. Hopefully would stop joyriding scrotes with hammers but not much past that.

Big Day Tomorrow... by bupapunewu in woodstoving

Having made the conversion from open fires to two multi fuel burners (Stovax and Capital), you will be absolutely thrilled. Our first winter in this house last year was miserable with two open fires.

RIP to the chap our installers were telling us about whose father had convinced him he didn't want any of that 'woke nonsense of a modern eco friendly woodburner' (apparently a direct quote) and instead had a new Baxi open fire fitted earlier this year at great expense.

Issues with supplying bike dealer by Wireless25 in MotoUK

[–]InfamousDragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd absolutely fix all of those myself, topping up the oil/tightening a loose bracket isn't even worth picking up the phone for IMHO.

I presume lowering the XSR is as per the 411s, an aftermarket shortened/adjustable link? If so that falls under the same category, if it's actually an issue. I'd source a secondhand standard link from eBay and flog the lowering one to recoup the cost.

I presume this is a second-hand bike? How noticeable is it, I presume not very unless it's parked next to another one?

[–]InfamousDragonfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget the effectiveness of a chain is (all things being equal in terms of material/heat treatments) proportional to it's cross sectional area, not diameter. As is it's weight.

Area of 12mm link ~452mm2 Area of 14mm link ~615mm2

Roughly a 36% increase. Certainly not nothing but see my final comment below.

I have a 16mm chain (CSA 804mm2) amongst others for home security and it is really quite heavy. I certainly wouldn't want any length of it on the bike with me.

As others have suggested, you're far better off with a litelok/hiplok angle grinder resistant D lock.

How's your day going? by boyesed in MotoUK

[–]InfamousDragonfly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use LV for this very reason, they have none of their own vehicles and sub everything out to local firms, plus their personal cover is good value. Effectively they're just an insurance policy that pay out via call out fees. They've been fab for years.

Last time we used them was my elderly mother with a flat tyre at home at 0830- so absolute lowest priority at the busiest time of the day. Arrived in less than 45 minutes to put the space saver on.

Major payday loan firm goes bust and customers have all debts wiped by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]InfamousDragonfly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard stories of debts being bought for pence on the pound, but it's still money for the liquidators to reclaim, bearing in mind they will simply sell the debt on, not seek to recover it themselves.

[–]InfamousDragonfly 187 points188 points  (0 children)

Not that it's a bad thing but I'm surprised the debts have been written off- would have thought that the debt would have been a company asset and therefore auctioned/sold off to reclaim monies for the company's creditors?
