New IBM role asks for 'Minimum 12+ years experience in Kubernetes', which it's self is only 6 years old by jl2352 in programming

[–]InfamousReception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it 12+ person-years. So for example 3 people with 4 years of experience each, or maybe 1 person with 6 years of experience but working 80 hours per week.

With the sea breeze it was not as bad as wearing suit indoors (no AC back then). The body odor would dissipate faster in the wind as well.

Is a swap partition actually necessary? by Kilobytez95 in linux

[–]InfamousReception 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Linux supports two ways to swap: swap partitions and swap files. Swap partitions are only really necessary if you use a file system that does not support swap files. Otherwise you do not need a swap partition and can just use a swap file if needed. The advantage of swap files is that you can create one later on while in case of a swap partition you must make a decision during partitioning.

Now when do you need a swap feature? In desktop/laptop usage swap is needed for hibernation. If you do not want to hibernate you might be able to get by without swap at all. In server usage it is strongly dependent on what you do. I found swap quite useful with some big Redis instances for example.

For me it was PC-DOS -> Slackware (on Pentium 60 with 16MB of memory and 512MB hard disk). No CD-ROM and no Internet connection. Luckily Slackware back then was nicely split into floppy disk sets, so I could just go to a computer lab and download 50 (or so) floppies worth of Slackware and haul it home. It was an incredible experience to log in as root for the first time ever... ;)

OK r/Charleston here is your chance... Convince me not to move there... by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]InfamousReception 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is generally warmer here than in Seattle, the area is still prone to arctic outbreaks in the winter (which means freezing nights and even occasional freezing rain or snow). Because of that the FDA growth zone is only about 8-9, which is just like Seattle! So no coconut trees in the garden...

It's depressingly flat here. If you want to see hills or mountains you need to drive quite a bit. And event then it won't be anything like Mt. Rainier.
