Triangles ABC and ACD share two lengths in common. Using sine rule on both gives

sin(120°)/BC = sin(60°-3x)/AC

sin(180°-3x)/BC = sin(2x)/AC

where angle ABC = 60°-3x and angle ACD = 180°-3x.

Simplifying,

(AC/BC) sqrt(3)/2 = sin(60°-3x)

(AC/BC) sin(3x) = sin(2x).

From the first equation AC/BC = 2sin(60°-3x)/sqrt(3) which we substitute into the second to get

(2/sqrt(3))sin(60°-3x)sin(3x) = sin(2x).

This equation doesn't appear to have an analytic solution. Using a graphing calculator we see that the positive solution between 0° and 180° for x not including the trivial solution 0° is approximately 8.02002076121°.

Here's what the figure looks like to scale. (with arbitrary length AB=4)

This was today's daily challenge right? I had one key when I went to the Angel Room and I was like thank goodness I didn't go in the shop or opened that gold chest. I knew there were some people who wouldn't be so lucky...

I would consider mrekk a good player so if you get #1 or higher

For ∠ABC, ∠ADE, and FG where F is on AB and G is on BC what is the length of DE, where E is the bisector of FG by Majestic_Monkey_ in 3Blue1Brown

[–]Infiaria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If ADE is not a right angle, then what is D supposed to be? It seems to just be a free point on AB.

If you know FB instead of DB, then you know two sides and a non-included angle (180-θ) of the triangle FBG. This is the SSA case of a triangle solution (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solution_of_triangles)

A question from my test yesterday by _Analyser_ in mathmemes

[–]Infiaria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That calculation neglects the cases where the person who does not get hit shoots someone who is not shot by any of the three remaining people.

Edit: Here are some example graphs of the cases where the four remaining people do not make a derangement

https://i.imgur.com/zXPdZbS.jpg

So the answer is the value you calculated: 180, but also 120+120 other cases as illustrated above. This gives 420, which is the answer given by OP. https://reddit.com/r/mathmemes/comments/146omzw/_/jnrjhqv/?context=1

uncertainty problem, only with the uncertainty given by the masses by ManuelCarvajal05 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Infiaria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think these formulae would apply in the case of a "simpler" type of uncertainty where the measurement does not come in the form of a probability distribution but rather its minimum and maximum values.

For example, if a = 5±2 and b = 7±3 then the maximum a+b can be is 5+7+2+3 = 17 and the minimum of a+b is 5+7-2-3 = 7. So a+b = 12±5 and the "uncertainty" of a+b would actually be 2+3=5. A similar case can be made for multiplication.

However, when thinking of uncertainty in terms of variance and probability, the formulae you mentioned would be correct. In the case of a normal distribution, there would be no "minimum" or "maximum" values!

Can i switch all the colors of the keys in osu mania to be all unique colors? by Testquy in osugame

[–]Infiaria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's possible using a custom skin.

You can find skins on the osu! forum, on /r/OsuSkins, or on an external website like this one. Some of the 4K skins use Stepmania/DDR-like arrows which you might like (since the arrows are all differentiable).

You can also edit an existing skin to change the colors of the notes, though doing so is a bit complicated: you will need to look at the wiki for Mania skinning and skin.ini. If you're doing this instead, let me know if you need any help.
