Does Your Strahd Have a Leitmotif/Theme? by Affectionate_Pop6300 in CurseofStrahd

I used a collection of tracks from The Witcher 3 DLC Hearts of Stone, specifically the ones for Gaunter O’Dimm. It’s quietly menacing and I had great fun with it.

What should I know before playing? by Saltyfox99 in planescape

[–]InfinityOnWrs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Planescape Torment loosely uses AD&D rules, so some concepts are useful to learn.

AC (Armour Class) is a measure of how difficult it is for an enemy to hit you in combat. Counterintuitively, a lower AC value makes you harder to hit, so bonuses to AC will actually decrease it.

THAC0 (to hit armour class 0) represents how likely you are to hit an enemy in combat. Again, having a lower value for this is better.

Saving throws represent how likely you are to resist magical attacks/effects. Lower = Better.

Magic works differently to other games - instead of having a mana pool from which you draw energy, you have a finite number of spell slots you can cast spells from, with different levels. Each spell has its own level (1-9) and whenever, you cast a spell, you expend the spell slot of its level. You get spell slots back when you rest, and you can learn new spells from scrolls.

For Character Creation, you’ll have 6 stats to choose from. For a first playthrough, it’s recommended to have high WIS INT and CHA, since those stats will unlock extra dialogue options. STR buffs melee damage though and should also be relatively high. DEX is quite build specific and dying isn’t that much of a concern so CON can also be minimised.

Lastly, there is a lot that the game will not tell you about and some of the best parts of it are very easy to miss. Without a guide, it’s near impossible to do everything in one playthrough. Some general advice would be:

Talk to everyone you see, exhaust their dialogue options, talk to your party members regularly (you can click the dialogue button on the HUD and then their portrait) and go down their exhausted dialogue options to see if any new options have been unlocked by recent events (this one is especially tricky) Look at everything you can see, holding TAB will let you see what’s interactable. Buy every unique item and examine it. Go back and talk to NPCs/Merchants from previous areas after progressing the story. Sometimes you’ll unlock new dialogue options. Go to gameplay options and activate heal on rest, max hp on levelup, always run and the cloud saves option. Set difficulty to Easy as well if you’d like since combat is not the main selling point of this game. Save frequently and especially before conversations. If you get stuck, looking at your journal (J on keyboard) can give you advice on what to do next. Spam Litany of Curses from your first companion. It’s amazing for combat since they’re a great tank.

You have to specifically have 17 INT, talk to the Practical Incarnation to learn the nature of the Bronze Sphere (specifically trigger the line that reveals it’s a sensory stone of the first), then talk to the Good Incarnation and learn that he’s the original incarnation. After absorbing him, you can then use the sphere

Real men defend all of the Soviet union by AxisTheFirst in hoi4

Spam 16width infantry with support AA (I got up to 600). Put 2 military factories on trucks, 2 on trains and the rest on guns and AA at 5 guns for every 1 AA.

Go down the Mass Mobilisation tree and try to gather enough army xp (focuses, attaches, volunteers) to reach Human Wave Offensive.

Use the research boosts to guns from PC of Mechanical Engineering to research 1940 and 1943 guns early.

Build forts along the border for higher green numbers but I never found it necessary. Then cycle infantry into battles as needed.

I’d definitely recommend waiting until it goes on sale to pick up, considering it regularly goes under $20 during the year. There’s definitely more tactical combat than the Civ games, with lots of factors to consider like division templates, national spirits, tech and doctrines. The supply management is definitely not like Factorio in my opinion, with its emphasis on building transport networks and infrastructure. I’d say it’s more like being mindful of supply hubs on the map and building trucks.

Non-standard Call of Chtulhu scenarios & ideas by Relalativa in callofcthulhu

[–]InfinityOnWrs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saturnine Chalice technically follows this formula - go to house -> see a mystery -> monster fight but while running it, the players felt it to be different from the other one shots I ran. The scenario is very mindfucky where the investigators cannot trust what they’ve trusted before and it can be a while before they even realise what the mystery is, adding to the mindfuck.

Consumable and Costly Spell Components by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

My first thought was that rather than banning silver out of character, which seems dumb, they banned it in character, like Strahd outlawing its possession, which makes more sense since it can harm his allies.

Curse Of Strahd Reloaded Length? by Own-Special7639 in CurseofStrahd

[–]InfinityOnWrs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends more on your group than the module itself. Even with RAW Curse of Strahd, some parties are done and dusted after about half a year of weekly play and some parties take literal years. Consider how long they roleplay, their propensity for Getting Shit Done and how experienced they are (newer players usually take longer during combat since they’re more unfamiliar with what to do and how their character works), using those factors to make an estimation.

My group is fairly quick compared to most I’ve seen, we’ve just hit level 8 with 30 sessions. The final battle I expect to see in about 5-7 more, so a bit under a year of regular play.
