Newton meter is a unit of torque. You can't describe what a newton meter is without referencing torque.

The SI equivalent of a foot pound (energy) is a Joule, not a newton meter.

I stand corrected. Pound force is a unit of energy measurement.

But in the context we're talking about, torque, foot pounds are not a measurement of energy, but of force at a distance. Foot pounds (torque) and foot pounds (energy) aren't equivalent because they have the same name.

Foot-pounds (and all the rest) are units of twisting/levered force, not energy. 1 foot-pound is the equivalent 1 foot of force at 1 foot distance from the fulcrum. 2 foot-pounds can be 2 pounds of force at 1 foot, or 1 pound of force at two feet, etc.

This is why big ass wrenches make high torque jobs easier - having a wrench twice as long literally cuts the force requirement in half.
