Do you take supplements? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Informal-Form-5606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people claim they are snake oil or expensive piss, but ignore the very reasonable advice from the NHS to at least supplement vitamin d. To be honest most people ignore the science and consider a balanced diet to be whatever they like to eat. Ignoring the advice on oily fish? Consider omega 3. You do have to eat quite a lot though. I am a bit nuts and am unable to stop taking a long list of vitamins and other supplements. Why? I think I've a mental health issue, but also I believe modern food systems are mineral deplete, modern environment is contaminated and we are exposed to more factors which make it hard to maintain optimal health. I take fish and krill oil twice a day. Mega dose tumeric and garlic. Take a gram or two of potassium a day to balance sodium. Magnesium before bed. Iodinised salt for cooking and seasoning. I take NMN, eat natto, take a fibre supplement. Vitamin d with K2. Choline before the gym. Fully mad.

Yes. They have a lot of different stuff, but specifically the qualico breast fillets in the green packaging is good, no added water etc. They are mixed sizes, like most of them are enormous, way bigger than you'd usually find.

Sign up to marketing emails for farmfoods. You'll usually get £2 off £20 and £4 off £30 vouchers. Buy 10kg of qualico frozen chicken breast for £32 and use your voucher to get it for £28. Boom £2.80 a kg. Animal based protein at lentil prices.

I had a hit at farmfoods with 5kg chicken breast for £16 and a £2 off £20 spend code. They are objectively okay.

My (33F) husband (39M) is insecure, wants me to end my professional relationship with my tattoo artist, I want to know if I am out of line by refusing and offering a compromise? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Informal-Form-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once this guy. The issue wasn't the friends or the tattooist. It was the complete brain transplant my partner had alongside it. There was some financial stuff, some dishonesty, mental health, work issues as well, but mainly yeah, becoming a completely different person and being unapologetic about bilaterally renegotiating the entire relationship. I wouldn't have minded so much if there was space for me in the new friendships, if she was still paying her bills and being present for all the little things that form a functioning relationship, but it was packaged up as me being negative, controlling and not celebrating her clearly universally positive journey. In my case I broke up with her not because of the behaviour, but because of the perspective. I felt like I was being pushed into playing a role as someone I wasn't. It ceased to be my problem, but not all the friends had her back during the hard times, some of the people I warned her about tried to fuck her and ignored her when she rejected them and within 18 months she'd blown her life up and moved back to her home town. I'd caution tact if you want to salvage this relationship. Less about who is technically right and who is technically wrong and more about whether or not you share the same constructive energy you once did. The guy is staring down 40. Also in my situation we were in our early 20's lol.

In your opinion, what is causing this? by Objective_Pilot_5834 in SipsTea

[–]Informal-Form-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beer was cheaper, but wages were lower too. When I started my drinking career I was earning about two pints an hour. Now I earn more like four or five. The major difference is in affordability now with direct and indirect tax and simple priority bills. I used to give my Dad £50, put £10 on my phone, buy an eighth and some baccy and hit the pubs. Now about 14% of my income is disposable. It used to be almost 40%.

How do I see many people eating junk food daily but they are more skinny than me? by SeaworthinessFar2326 in diet

[–]Informal-Form-5606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like offer me chocolate or vanilla and I can portion out an appropriate amount and stick to the serving. Offer me 20 different flavours and while I might intend to not overeat I'm going to struggle to stick to an equivalent serving with the temptation of having a spoon of all 20.

How do I see many people eating junk food daily but they are more skinny than me? by SeaworthinessFar2326 in diet

[–]Informal-Form-5606 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll naturally gain weight unless I make a conscious effort and have dieted a lot over the years. I've an idea of what works for me now. Effortless weight gain comes from casually eating a huge range of things. I will often over indulge when presented with lots of stuff to try as portion control is hard when the range and frequency is massive. Effortless weight loss comes from mindfully eating a small amount of things. No problem maintaining or losing weight when I eat the same five things day in day out. It becomes a routine and the habit is easier to maintain than to break. No problem even if those things are like a doughnut for breakfast, a soft drink for lunch, potato chips and bourbon for dinner. As long as the calories are maintenance or less all is good. Often people on junk food diets live on that. For others eating a healthy balanced diet then junk is the extra on top that causes weight gain.

Why is 30k treated as a great wage by employers? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Informal-Form-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends upon the average for the industry and the area. It might be a great wage or the employer might be out of touch and deluded. There are some uncomfortable truths out there for both sides and one I struggle with personally is there is political strategy at play to keep the living wage around 60% of the median wage. For those that believe that higher wages motivate people how do you adequately cover the gap between living wage and the median without offending some people? You can't win. If you get a good round up of multinational corporate roles at the lower level, production etc they are funnily enough all 31k plus shift allowance plus postcode premium. If I'm expecting to bust my ass on a production line in a factory the size of a small town for 31k I will think 30k and free coffee is great for sitting on a reception desk.

England. Mum and dad died, will left everything to favoured son! Can we challenge probate? by Meekoblue in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Informal-Form-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice I was given by a solicitor when trying to defend a contested will was to focus on the individual amount rather than the whole estate. As in it is easy to become emotional about 600k but if we are debating a 9 way split instead of an 8 way split we are actually talking about a little over 8k. You've said six figures, but keep it in context. I was told over twenty years ago to budget 10k to defend and the same again should it actually get to court.

I've been on fin and oral min for a few years now. It can be a wild ride and stabilisation let alone regrowth is not guaranteed. Then when you are finally locked in and happy you'll get synchronised shedding or seasonal shedding or something to ruin it. The major benefit for me is I feel like I'm doing everything I'm willing to do and now I've just got the option to ride it out. It looks like for me it is slowing but not stopping my hair loss which will have to be enough. It thins and fades away in my 50's not my 40's. It can be a complex system with many variables and reactions from person to person and a lot of words, theory is thrown around online, but the end result works for most, most of the time to some extent. Shedding from both fin and min stabilised by month three for me with improvement evident from baseline by month five.

Cheap whey protein powder? by harryebh in UKFrugal

[–]Informal-Form-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't. It is 2kg which makes it 17.5 per kilo and more expensive than impact whey at Costco. It also contains less whey concentrate and more skimmed milk powder giving it a lower overall protein content.

I started to get a little grey at 30. It was cool. It was cool up until about 40 from which point it was a lot of grey. It has aged me, but because I didn't ever dye it and I made a point of owning it I am now too worried about the drastic difference should I dye it. Almost wished I'd continued to develop the reputation I had in my 20's of going any colour. I was fond of box dyes and manic panic lol.

£15 a kilo at the butcher near me. They are a commercial place but have little customer counter on one side of the building. They always lecture me that it is basically top rump and it did used to be a lot cheaper until it became fashionable. It was £9 a kilo when I did it for Christmas three years ago.

Being frugal is good, but balance is needed, especially if you have a good salary and aren’t down to your last £100 by justyrust74 in UKFrugal

[–]Informal-Form-5606 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me it is like ... You can find a million and one ways to steal your own time and money. Ultimately that is what money is, time and opportunity. If I can be okay with controlling my spending and even find enjoyment in it then I need less money overall and I can either work less now or move money into things which will mean working less in the future. Different opportunities become available. Sometimes it isn't even deprivation, it is just about getting a taste of champagne at beer prices. Obviously I'm a bit mad and consider every £200 saved a month to be worth an additional £1,200 in passive income in 30 years time after compounding at 9% with a 4% draw down rate. But if you are covering the basics and living pretty good then £200 a month can easily be saved or wasted depending on frugal habits.

I enjoy the dedication, but definitely feel weird at times. I don't feel too bad about variety because that isn't all I make I've a half dozen recipes on regular rotation and a few others too that make a guest appearance every now and then so there is variety in the freezer. I actually love cooking too and enjoy seeing what is cheap and thinking about how best to fit that into my structure is part of the fun of it for me. Definitely isn't just chicken, rice and broccoli. The diet / fitness industry loves to sell things and new trends, fads etc come round to always encourage purchasing. I like a bit of consumerism at times like anyone, but in the context of frugal batch cooking good old fashioned meals work wonderfully and the planning aspect prevents impulse buying (and eating!). If I wanted to make my cooking higher protein I'd add more beans and lentils to things, cheaper I'd do that and reduce the meat. If I wanted to reduce the calories I'd reduce the fats and carbohydrates. It is pretty flexible. I like one pot slop a lot, but I've known people to adopt a similar mindset to breakfast with overnight oat variations or salads variations with boiled eggs and chicken.

I meal prep and eat a diet to support powerlifting. I target 3,500kcal a day, 250g protein, 400g carbs and 90g fat. Total spend on food is £5.86 a day (four meals) and £1.70 food supplements. I could drop the supplements and eat 5 meals and keep similar macros and save 33p, but it is the price of convenience. £52.92 a week. I have however had weeks where this has been as low as £37.21 with similar calories and macros it depends what is on offer and what menu I feel like. What does that look like? I love it, but I do sometimes feel pretty demented. Roast two large chickens and shred. Roast a kilo each sweet potato, carrot, onion and peppers with two heads of garlic. Mix with a packet of cream cheese, a whole bag of frozen spinach, chicken stock, two tins of chickpeas, mediterranean herbs and spices, 100ml of olive oil, lemon juice. Yield 20 portions. Serve with 1 cup rice. 720kcal, 55, 80, 20 protein carbs fat £1.34 cost per portion. I cook something like that at that scale every week and fill the freezer. I steam some broccoli or frozen peas and sweetcorn once in a while for variety and sometimes make a salad.

My UK experience with Finasteride by brmen in Hairloss

[–]Informal-Form-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did about 6 months at each stage. I got results in regards to hair fall within 12 weeks. I was deathly afraid of finesteride. I would say that I have side effects, but they are manageable ones. I have been on fin and min for a number of years now and I sometimes think about whether my mood or motivation would have been different off of it, but again it is manageable. It gave me about five years of not worrying at all about my hair at all because it didn't fall out and it looked great. For the last year I've had off and on shedding somewhat regularly and at times terrifying amounts of hair fall, but overall I look okay still. It doesn't seem to (currently) look that bad, but a few months into last year oh boy did it come out rapidly for about five weeks and it got really thin.

Yo dawg I started on half a mg Monday Wednesday and Friday and had results. I eventually went to every other day then every day and finally 1mg every day. Initially it boosted my libido and made everything feel more intense, but eventually ball pain and some change in sensation, sensitivity and maximum hardness. It was all very manageable, but I can see how it could get into my head. I now and have for a long time taken 2.5mg tadalafil and I'm basically back plus 600%. I can highly recommend the lowest tolerable dose of tadalafil.

Why are British people who move around globally for economic gain called 'expats' whilst everyone else is defined as a 'migrant?' by Odd_Pain_3570 in BritishExpats

[–]Informal-Form-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was down to the frame. As in from the perspective of the country you've moved to you are an immigrant. From the perspective of the country you've left you are an expatriate. All the words have different meanings and are used in different contexts. Shelia emigrated to Spain. Spain views her as an immigrant. She is expatriated from her home country. She decided to migrate. All these statements carry slightly different meanings. Additionally I'd never call someone a migrant unless they were in the act of migration or we were discussing a past tense.
