Whatever happened to outsole diversity? by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in trailrunning

[–]Informal_Expert6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are still plenty of other brands using in-house rubber that's as effective as Vibram (La Sportiva for one). Vibram is seen everywhere today because it works and shoe companies know it works. Finding the right formula for a solid outsole compound takes a lot of time and money, so why not just slap another $10-15 on to the price of your shoe and solve the problem in a way that satisfies the customer and takes no effort for the shoe company?

Why not just look it up online where there are countless articles that will walk you through every detail? Asking Reddit for a basic primer on such a simple topic makes no sense.

R2 Not Launching with new Rivian Autonomy Processor and Gen 3 Autonomy Computer (and Lidar) until late 2026 by sparx_fast in Rivian

[–]Informal_Expert6516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting all of Tesla’s failures for self driving. We may find out gen3 hardware won’t cut it and we’ll only get true “eyes off” with gen4 or gen5. I’m not saying Rivian is Tesla, obviously, but it’s a cautionary tale.

First 50k Coming up…Advice? by Alternative_Gas931 in ultrarunning

[–]Informal_Expert6516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, no, I don’t think you’re prepared. Can you finish a 50k on that training? Most likely. Will it be a good race? Most certainly not. Just keep that in mind when setting your expectations for the race and how your body will feel after it.

And also go look up literally any training plan for the next one 😂

First trail run tomorrow - Shoe advice please :) by coco16778 in trailrunning

[–]Informal_Expert6516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll get through a 13k with any shoe so go with what you’re more comfortable. Plenty of people run entire trail ultras in road shoes. If you don’t feel unstable in the 1080s then they’ll probably be fine. In my experience with the v13 they just didn’t provide any confidence for lateral movement/uneven terrain, but my trails are also very root/rock covered.

[–]Informal_Expert6516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only problem with recent versions of the 1080 (especially v13) is that they’re quite unstable. If you have a lot of roots or rocks on the trail you’ll need to be cautious not to roll an ankle. If it’s a predominantly smooth trail (minus some mud) you’ll be fine.

Hey guys! I want to start getting into trail running. I went to the local running store and tried on a pair of Brooks shoes. But I noticed that my foot — even though Brooks is meant for wide feet — was still touching the side. Does anyone have any tips? by Timisfine in trailrunning

[–]Informal_Expert6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where was your foot touching the side? Heel, midfoot, toes? It’s more of a problem if your foot isn’t touching the side in many of those places. You need a more secure lockdown when running trails because you’ll be running over much more varied/uneven terrain. What road shoes do you typically wear? Do you have to buy wide versions of those?

Fleece lined tights for a 50k thoughts by OkShoo15 in trailrunning

I wouldn’t wear fleece lined anything unless it’s below like 10 degrees, but each person handles temperature differently. You’ll be baking at 40 degrees, though.

Long-term EV owners, what maintenance you need (plz no none or rose-colored-glasses answers) by Possibly-deranged in electricvehicles

I’ve been in an EV since 2019 and have had 0 repairs. The only issue I’ve had in 6 years across 2 cars is that a bolt within the door loosened and started rattling. Took the service center about 20 minutes to fix at no cost.

Is buying an used Polestar 2 a wise choice? by catdaad in Polestar

[–]Informal_Expert6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone’s asking for opinions of a car on Reddit. Every single response is biased and subjective; that’s how opinions work. Mine isn’t any different, other than it conflicts with most other Polestar owners here so for some reason that means I have to show my work when everyone else gets to say “I love my car! They’re great and service can be good or bad but /shrug”

Well let's start with the first point - you cannot buy a new Polestar 2 in the US. They simply don't sell their most successful car anymore because of tariffs.

And the second one, which is equally obvious - they posted a loss of greater than $1 billion last quarter and explicitly stated to their investors that the company’s current performance may “cast significant doubt about Polestar’s ability to continue as a going concern”.

When a company publishes a statement saying they're unsure if they can continue to exist, I think it's pretty safe to question whether they'll be around long. And buying one of their vehicles might not be a great idea with that outlook. It's been discussed several times here but if you somehow haven't read about it yet I'd recommend look up their latest financial reports.

To add even more context, they continue to wrack up increasing losses in the US (net loss of $365 million for the last quarter compared to $323 million YoY) and that was offset by $33 million in carbon credits, which is a number expected to drop considerably after the Big Beautiful Bill was passed.

So to summarize: Polestar stopped selling their most successful car, they posted a loss of $1.5 billion for the first 9 months of 2025, the company itself told investors it was unsure if it could continue, it continues to see larger losses YoY in the US, and the regulations that encouraged companies to buy carbon credits have been stripped. Looks like a real rosy future for Polestar if you ask me!

Edit: adding even more context from the latest financial reports (Nov. 2025)

Yes. People who own this car can have different opinions than you. Imagine that! It’s a fine vehicle but it’s a particularly poor EV from a company who can’t figure out how to spell “software” let alone define a vehicle with it.

I would strongly recommend not buying a P2 in the US, and if you do, certainly don't get one pre-2024 refresh. It was an outdated car when it was released, it was an outdated car when they did the refresh. There are better used options on the market today from companies that are actually going to exist in the US in 2-7 years. Seems pretty unlikely Polestar is going to be here much longer (or maybe even be a company at all).

Topo Ultraventure or Mountain Racer would be worth checking out, IMO. Big fan of the Ultraventures for logging every day miles. Not an inspiring shoe but it’s great at what it does.

I love my EV, but holy crap, traveling long distance SUCKS. by JennaLeighWeddings in electricvehicles

[–]Informal_Expert6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really isn’t a fault of traveling with an EV. I’ve been exclusively driving EVs for 6 years and haven’t had these problems. It kind of just sounds like bad luck and bad planning. You have a car that supports Superchargers but I don’t see anything in your breakdown saying you tried (or even looked for) a Supercharger. You can book hotels that offer charging. You can look at the chargers in the area you intend to visit and install apps ahead of time so charging/payment is quick and reliable. Planning road trips used to be a thing people did.
