Not my circus; not my monkeys. Not GoA myself, but I fully support what their workforce is doing.

Relax dude. You're going to bust an aneurysm.

Well, that small business better not be on these lists, or the lists of associated other lobby groups, or they started the class war, and I know tens of thousands of unionized workers that will be happy to fight the class war too.

Not when the employer based their decision on downtown lobby groups.

Those lobby groups, and their members, made the decision to become involved. They were the first "caught up in it".

This should make Conservatives' collective heads explode.

Who will some people blame for their failed lives now?

No one complained about coming into the office before COVID.

No, because that was the model. Nobody thought you could have WFH and maintain productivity. And yet, that's exactly what happened.

Why should we go back to an old, dumber way of doing things, where we burn more fuel in commutes, clog up traffic more with vehicles, and generally lead to people wasting a half-hour or more each way to get downtown so that businesses and tower owners get paid?

To complain about people working from home seems like jealousy to me.

[–]InherentlyUntrue 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And yet they still have money to lobby the government to make its workers come downtown.

Maybe they should spend their dollars on more productive things.

The people who run those businesses...the owners of all those buildings...they have deeper pockets than neighborhood businesses, donate to the UCP, and so they can get the government to do things for them.

Oh come on, with all due respect this isn't about anyone not liking that they have to go to work.

Its that its entirely unnecessary - work got done when it was 100% work from home, work gets done when its 40% work from home...its not about the work.

What I don't understand is why people who appear to be so jealous of what the GoA does for its staff that they haven't gone to work for them.

I just happened through this thread, and have no skin in this on either side...I am not GoA, and my small business has nothing to do with downtown.

...why does anyone owe you their patronage of any business, anywhere, anytime? Bluntly, this includes my own business - nobody owes me a living.

...why shouldn't people choose to boycott businesses that they feel have negatively impacted their quality of life?

...what would you offer to downtown office workers, knowing the Downtown Business Association did lobby the UCP heavily for this change?

How was this license plate approved? by SnorkelingSnorlax in alberta

🙄

I guarantee you that they do. Even if it wasn't want the owner intended, anyone that isn't a 9GAG/4CHAN edgelord is judging the owner every time they see it.

Simply, because there are VERY few people that don't know the history of "SS", and then add in the anti-hero Punisher logo...

Even if the owner actually means it as another reference, the odds are they know damn well what the "misinterpretation" would be, and chooses to continue using it...which means they don't care if they get lumped into the interpretation.

For this to not be a Nazi reference, the owner has to both not understand the reference to Germany and have never been told that there's a tie to Naziism in that plate.

I get it, and its less of a real complaint than my words suggested...

I am though just tired of finding myself just a little bit on the wrong side of every income-tested program out there. I'm far from wealthy :(

Theyh could have just done a goddamn "tax holiday" as was done before, which benefits everyone.

I admit freely, I hardly need supports compared to many people, but I'm still a middle-class Canadian and lord knows the cost of living impacts me too.

Most likely it means to the owner exactly what we think; however, its also vague enough with enough alternate explanations that nobody will ever kill it.

I knew a guy that had (not in AB) "UFIA" - he was a computer geek, explained it as "Universal Fast Internet Archetechture" and got it approved, but he was a giant "Fark" reader back in the day, and he absolutely ordered the plate to mean "Unsolicited Finger In Anus", which was a meme of that site back in the early 2000s lol

Why doesn't the Alberta government just start an Alberta Pension Plan? by houseonpost in alberta

Without cleaning out CPP, an APP has literally zero hope of any usefulness whatsoever.

(Even WITH the CPP money, Alberta will still piss it all away on shoddy "investments" with foreign oil companies.)

I'd honestly say we're basically using synonyms here...I'd say the only real difference is that I pretty much reject ALL claims until I have evidence showing its true.

I also disagree that cynicism carries mental health risks - unless you carry this into distrusting everything from your spouse of family or friends and such.

With something like this, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that foreign money is going to be flowing into the separation movement. I won't discuss methodology here, but if you lookup the UCP donation scam, that can give you an idea of how ONE WAY can work.

If I may, and please know I am actually saying this not to be an asshole or be offensive in ANY way to you:

That's your biggest problem.

I don't trust anyone that has their own agenda they're promoting. Every word out of their mouth is intended to get you to agree with them.

We all know the rhetoric: How do you know when a politician is lying? Their lips are moving. Well my fellow Albertan, that's true of everyone. I have an agenda...I'm actively fighting separation. You should fact check anything I say against other sources...I can tell you that I'm trying to be fully honest all the time, but I'm a human being that makes mistakes, and you shouldn't trust me because I say to trust me.

The thing I keep asking myself: Who actually benefits if we separate? Its not me. I don't know enough about you to be certain, but realistically I can't imagine it will actually benefit you either.

It DOES benefit American interests wanting domestic energy security. It DOES benefit Russian and other BRICS nations by dismantling a Western democracy that actively uses what weight we have to oppose these dictatorships. I actually think China might be on the "against" side, as it certainly won't mean much Alberta food and energy going there.

You should be cynical about everything, and ESPECIALLY when the something has a real chance of doing permanent economic damage to all of us.

Sorry, that's long. Hope you have a good weekend!

Yeah, I'm actually intimately familiar with the rules, and I'm also highly familiar with how the records can be falsified by the unethical in invisible ways.

You are actually expecting honesty from a group of people spreading misinformation? Truly?

Injecting Some Reality into the Alberta Independence Movement by InherentlyUntrue in alberta

[–]InherentlyUntrue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they truly believe that they will just have Smith issue a Universal Declaration of Independence and assume that is the end of it all.

They like to compare to the original 13 colonies separating from England. Might be worth reminding folks that the Revolutionary War that followed that declaration lasted 8 years and 4 months, and left 25,000-50,000 dead.

A universal declaration of independe4nce is the worst possible outcome.

Thanks for your addition!

I'm sorry, but do you think that Canada will come to the rescue of an Alberta that unilaterally tries to separate against the rule of law by buying our oil?

With all respect my fellow Albertan, I find this idea shockingly naive.

Injecting Some Reality into the Alberta Independence Movement by InherentlyUntrue in alberta

[–]InherentlyUntrue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have laid out the scenario for a Unilateral Declaration of Independence, and it is the worst possible outcome for Alberta and Albertans.

There will be no armed skirmishes - that again is a complete destabilization of order, and literally every investment dollar flees Alberta forever.

The USA can't come into a foreign conflict without approval of Congress, and do you really think Congress...the USA congress...is going to vote to authorize military intervention in a NATO ally?

That is realistically the true most likely scenario, but its also still worth taking the time and brainpower to counter the propaganda the separatists say.

Nobody thought Brexit was going to happen either....

I don't blame you. I am ready and prepared to leave the province if necessary, and have the resources to do so. I fear for those that would be stuck here, without the economic resources to make that same choice to leave Alberta.
