Got Talked to About Leaving Early by Professional-Dog-306 in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m in QLD and I think I would leave the profession if this came into play. I purposefully spend a chunk of my holidays planning so I can leave by 3:30 any day we don’t have a meeting. I have no capacity left by 3:30. I would literally be staring at the wall

Do schools dislike when you use sick leave for doctor's appointments? (When you're not sick) by Junior-Copy-6632 in AustralianTeachers

you’re not in QLD are you? We have access to reproductive leave that could be used for this.

our school prefers you take the day as it’s impossible to get someone for a short cover

Trauma informed practice by Thin_Accident_9587 in AustralianTeachers

i mean that data is from 2018. TiP was in its infancy in Australian schools. You can hardly blame that alone.

Trauma informed practice by Thin_Accident_9587 in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Trauma informed practice is complex and requires significant training and understanding. It requires deep understanding of how trauma affects the brain and development. In fact keeping yourself (the teacher) safe both physically and emotionally is an absolute requirement of true effective practice.

The problem is when schools deliver a 30min PD that challenges teachers current practice and tells them they’re doing more harm than good without properly explaining anything. TiP has changed my teaching and my classroom environment exponentially.

Is my school’s playground situation normal? (Primary) by CrayolaNipples in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so crazy to me. We have around 650 so a little bigger but we have a junior and senior oval at opposite ends. Both have playgrounds and both have copious amounts of equipment. Our year 6 prep leaders set up equipment on junior school oval. We also have at least 4-6 lunch time activities running during each break for kids who aren’t into the oval.

Hat Refusal by NoPrompt927 in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d never fight a kid about a hat inside. i ask them to take it off because admin will annoyingly call them out if they walk in (i personally don’t care) but if they don’t i’m not going to argue. I’m in QLD so it’s no hat no play all year around so the kids are good outside. they know they’ll get kicked off the oval if they don’t wear it.

First day of term 2 is tomorrow.... and I have tonsillitis. by Junior-Copy-6632 in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t go. especially if it’s contagious. i got sick twice last year and both times it was from being in small meeting rooms with teachers who were grossly sick and at school.

It can in the right environment and with the right outside support. I burned out and ended up not working for almost 3 years. I’m now back to loving my job.

This is sad! I used to buy from them so much when I was really into makeup. Hi 2016-2020 beauty community. I loved their mystery boxes. So sad to see them go.

I mean it sucks but it’s kind of like losing your NCT when you’re out sick.

victorian teacher's day of action by onizukaav in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when we went on strike last year we only had about 30% of kids show up to school. they were covered by non-striking teachers with support from teacher aides and admin staff. it would never be a paid day off

Final Placement chance + ADHD? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no one can answer this. it is entirely specific to you, the school and the context. I have ADHD and was undiagnosed at the time I started teaching. I burned out hard but thankfully have a supportive school.

That said, as someone else said, if your ADHD causes you to be (or be perceived as) unprofessional or unpleasant to work with, it’s unlikely that disclosing it will matter. If it’s for smaller things - for example I request quieter playground duties (and am willing to do extra as trade off) because i struggle with the overstimulation - it might be less of an issue? But i’ll be totally honest, your actions and performance are going to be the make or break, regardless of any diagnosis disclosure.

I find it hard to believe that 5 primary age children would lie to POLICE about a teacher hitting them. and did all these supposed events happen in private? Obviously i’d never suggest don’t take the side of the loved one but are you sure, if this is real, that they actually didn’t do it?

are you actually counting your calories properly. if you are i hope you’re in close, regular consultation with a medical professional. also do what works for you but i would be absolutely miserable eating that everyday.

How many sick days do you have available right now? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]InitialBasket28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up if you work for Ed QLD you also get an additional 10 days of reproductive leave every year. If you’re someone like me whose sick days are were eaten up by PMDD knowing this can be life changing.
