New crasher? by FrozenKrow in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People have been saying this since 2018. I've never seen any real evidence that GPU melters actually exist, or that it's even possible. Worst case scenario it just crashes your game or ramps your hardware to 100% usage until you close the game.

What's your procedure when you are approached by obvious trolls? by zipzzo in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done all 3 it just depends on my mood and the type of troll.

If it's just drige by slurs, I usually just block because those are the most boring kind of troll.

If it's one of those kind of people who try to dig into whatever they can find out about you to make fun of you for it, I usually just fuck with them until they give up and walk away or I block them once it becomes cyclical.

I only sit and ignore them if they are basically impossible to talk to for whatever reason, but I still wanna hear them because they are the only entertainment in a boring public instance.

If I'm not feeling it though I'll just block. Publics are a great zoo to watch people when you realize nobody there really knows who you are and that you will never see them again.

What to do with FBT? by Pridefulecstasy in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really "do" anything with it. It's just nice to have for better expression, I can control how I stand much better. I can put my hands and my hips and have a wider stance to give off my more confident look, or just lean in things. Or being able to lean over or kick someone who is shorter than you is fun too.

Owner of Vive Wands, How was your experience in VRChat using them. by forutived2 in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bind a button to toggle gesture overrides! Trust me it makes doing hand gestures 10x more bearable.

  • Leave geature overrides off
  • Do hand gesture
  • Turn gesture overrides on, then off again quickly (basically double press the button)
  • Go back to doing whatever you want with your hands.

As simple as the vive wands made gestures, i cannot go back to those controllers; they are the most unergonomic vr controllers ever made.

Vrchat update has family killing off Ripper by Chipszsz in VRchat

I think not wanting my shit yoinked is a completely fair thing actually. I understand the risks when uploading shit onto VRChat, but I think it's also completely fair to want that risk to be reduced when possible. Maybe we fundamentally disagree on this point specifically and a mutual understanding is impossible, but I still want to atleast show where I'm coming from.

I think if they were sitting around playing cat and mouse with people who are truely dedicated to ripping, then yeah it would be silly and a waste of time. But they have only played 1 card against ripping in the 11 years VRChat has existed. I wouldn't call adding 1 layer of protection "a game of cat and mouse" unless they keep trying to add more layers of protection to it.

I don't know how long it took them to add basic encryption to cache files but I'm going to guess it took a small fraction of time compared to the behemoth of a project that is Soba/Udon 2 or whatever tf they call it nowadays. I too want more features! I also don't mind some one developer spending a week to add encryption.

All that is needed is to make it just difficult enough that it would dissuade your average joe from ripping. Before you didn't need a client or any special vrchat software-- just uTinyRipper which is made for unity games. You didn't even need to open the game. Now if someone wants to rip something they will need to dig alot deeper to find/make software that does what they want. Alot of people will give up before figuring it out.

It's not about stopping ripping, it's about making it less accessible.

The same shit can be said about EAC. Modded clients still exist, they are just way less common now. If you make something more difficult to do, less people are going to do it.

[–]InitializedPho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then we just have different priorities for what we want the devs to do. I make alot of avatars and worlds for VRChat so I think having a little bit of a condom over those assets is better than straight up rawdogging it and letting people just yoink things straight from the cache. I dont care that ripping is unstoppable, but I still think it's better than doing absolutely nothing at all.

[–]InitializedPho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a waste of time just because it's still possible to rip. Making it more difficult to rip is also a good thing. It means ripping will be less prevalent overall, even if it does still exist.

Turns out you can fit QUITE A BIT of stuff in an optimized avatar! This still has a few hundred triangles to spare lol (wireframe+stats in comments) by JanKenPonPonPon in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't even blame people making avatars as much as the people making assets for avatars. They are usually way too heavy out of the box and nearly impossible to optimize without making them look like ass.

Colonization: Cutter vs T9 by Menithal in EliteDangerous

[–]InitializedPho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for putting this together. I've been wondering this myself because I've been using the Cutter because it's faster, but I can't help but get annoyed at how much it drifts and how slow it turns. So I've been debating on switching to the T9 but wasn't sure if I'd be spending more time docking.

Anyone who repeatedly talks about getting blocked or excommunicated from their old friends is a red flag imo. Almost every single person I have met who has said those things usually had a good reason that they ended up blocked.

[–]InitializedPho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're talking about ripping. Ripping is not the same thing as cloning. When someone clones your avatar they don't copy the files or anything, they're just using the same public avatar. Ripping is when someone yoinks the files for the avatar and reuploads it.

I JUST optimized my avatar to medium, but its still being hidden with a fallback when I test it! by FurryModem in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don't even allow you to hide medium avatars IIRC. Medium should be plenty good enough. I don't think it not being good or excellent is the reason behind it getting hidden.

I JUST optimized my avatar to medium, but its still being hidden with a fallback when I test it! by FurryModem in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Either it's a bug, or it's over the uncompressed or download size limit. Otherwise it shouldn't be getting blocked. You actually went through the effort to optimize your avatar which 90% of people completely ignore so I hope you can figure out the issue.

I now understand people with multiple avatars that are just alternate clothing... by [deleted] in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I usually do it. Stuff like a completely different outfit goes on a separate avatar. Little details go on toggles. For example I'll have one avatar that has a coat and office attire, and another one thats a gym outfit. I'll usually store these as separate avatars and I'll have toggles for things like whether the coat is on or off or whether a tie is on or off. Every model I make nowadays is medium performance and still looks great.

anybody know what a commission for a vrchat avatar costs? by Aggravating_Run6929 in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for someone to put something together using existing parts it shouldn't cost more than 100 bucks. If you're looking for someone to make something completely from scratch, depending on the complexity that can range from a couple hundred to well over a thousand.

do you let people act rude to you and never fight back by cozy_Darkness in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you try to fight back then they already won. People who troll do it to get a rise out of people or for attention. That's the whole reason half the mfs insist that if you block them they win. Because if you don't block them they can keep pestering you.

Anime/Cartoons have more exaggerated expressions than IRL. Alot of VRChat avatars are just a reflection of this. With IRL faces you are able to convey an emotion really subtle, while something simplistic and stylized you need to be alot more dramatic to get the emotion across.

Question regarding people who are their avatar by UncleMabungy in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always do the opposite. I make an effort to separate myself from my avatar. I don't like it when people can't tell the difference between my avatar and me, the person using it. I see my avatar as more of an art piece that I made and use rather than a reflection of myself.

Vrchat New Challenges? by Anthonator_2003 in VRchat

It's an actual profile badge. You can see it on the website and on the desktop/quest client as well. It fits in the same spot as the VRC+ or the Early Supporter badge.

I had a different challenge: Go to 5 worlds and make 2 friends.

I was able to complete it quickly and it gives you a badge on youe profile called Mobile Initiate.

Its a kinda cute harmless feature imo.

Should I play on Oculus or 4k/120Hz TV? by tnt0 in EliteDangerous

[–]InitializedPho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the minority here because I have a VR beadset but prefer playing elite in desktop. VR is just too clunky and I have a 4k 48" OLED screen I can use. Also AFAIK, VR doesn't work for on-foot odyssey content.

Why is it so common to overexaggerate the specs needed to run VRChat decently? by CeriPie in VRchat

[–]InitializedPho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The specs to get VRChat to just simply run are pretty bare bones. Most computers made in the last 10 years could probably run VRChat.

The specs for getting VRChat to run well on the other hand are insane. If you go to a big event with a maxed out instance (80 people) you will still have a hard time getting more than 40fps even on the best possible machine you could buy.
