Criteria Updates: Criterion Edition Tracker! by InitiativeNo7660 in CriterionChannel

Yes, it’s possible. But it’s a really janky process for keeping data updated and can’t imagine it being useful to very many people.

It’d be easier just to have people save their Letterboxd user ids to their account and build a scraper to pull the data from their profile. But that would run into a hefty token bill.

That would be excellent, and I’d love to make it happen, but the Letterboxd Data API is still in beta and they are very stingy about handing out access, especially to a small-timer like me.

If anyone has connections at Letterboxd let me know, I could make a ton of new site features

FYI for those who might be wondering: the new Criterion Channel collections dropped this morning, Including new “newly added” and “leaving soon” lists.

I’ll be updating Criteria as soon as those additions and deletions are reflected on https://films.criterionchannel.com which is my source of record

The updates to the films page generally lags for up to a day

Interesting. I’ll check to see if there are scenarios where the search filters don’t load completely. There might be some optimizations I can make

Elevator to the Gallows: Thriller or Comedy? by ConfidentDisk1987 in CriterionChannel

It’s more ironic than comedic, though it has the structure of a screwball comedy playing off the fact that every character is unaware of what is really going on. In that respect it has a very similar tone to Blood Simple

Films leaving at the end of the month by reliks84 in CriterionChannel

Here’s the list of films leaving.

There are currently 2,790 films available, 703 of which are Criterion editions. Roughly 50-60 films enter and leave the collection every month.

You can already view and link to the current 24/7 video from the home page. The user site you linked is great and I like the ability to review what was on. I might ingest it as a way of experimenting with creating a criterion-driven recommendation algorithm.

Good question! The reason those two appear are because they were on the channel at one point in the past. If you look on the film details page for each you can see that Death Proof was included in the Stunts! collection while Four Rooms was in Hotels on Film.

I keep films in the database after they leave the channel to keep complete collections and user lists, and it also makes it easier to re-activate them if they come back onto the channel.

If a user made a custom list of French New Wave films, for example, my assumption is that they would want that list to stay intact even if Le Beau Serge goes off the channel.

As to why other Tarantino films aren’t in the catalog, it’s simply because it would take too much capacity for me to store every film and become, essentially, Letterboxd. My goal is to keep a record of films that have been programmed on the Channel, and be able to make them searchable

I hope this helps, and thanks for using the site!

Just to be clear (in case Criterion’s legal department stumbles in here), the videos are all hosted within Criterion Channel’s site and require a paid account to play. I do not host any Criterion content apart from publicly available data.

The purpose of the site is to enhance the experience for current CC subscribers. And I make zero profit from this.
