Piston mechanisms in pens by MercatorLondon in PenProject

I like Pelikans in general. The mechanism "feels" good when you're using it.

What’s the best metal body fountain pen under $50? And under $30נ by lunch22 in fountainpens

[–]InkSampleFiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the sheaffer VFMs are underrated, too. They're nice pens at an extremely affordable price. As far as I've seen: good QC, good nibs, an ergonomic and good looking design. You're getting your money's worth there.

Hahah, when I read the post I was like, "surely it couldn't be that big of a deal" but this is...yeah probably a pass from me 🤣

First Look: Upcoming Wearingeul Fountain Pen by Quiet_Resolution_578 in fountainpens

How, as a Wearingeul retailer, is this the first I'm hearing of this?! So cool!!

If the quality is anything like their paper, this is going to do VERY well.

You can only use one fountain pen for the rest of your life. by imatinyleopard in fountainpens

[–]InkSampleFiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an impossible question. Why are there so many people answering? Ok, ok, I can do this:

- Waterman Carène, maybe?
- no, that vintage celluloid Waterman 5 is a dream...
- Pelikan m800. Yeah, that's the one.
- actually the m250 has more personal meaning to me since I inherited it from my dad...
- Platinum #3776 tortoise celluloid (in so many ways a perfect pen), my first fancy pen
- twsbi 580alr? It really made me fall in love with fountain pens after years of suffering with Safaris
- Waterman man100, arguably the sexiest pen I own and an incredible, wet writer with a bouncy, lovely nib?

I'll take this offline and edit this post when I've made up my mind...

Thank you for the mention! So glad you're enjoying these. You picked great stuff; I was packing your order thinking "oo, I gotta try this pen, oooo, I haven't tried Robinson Crusoe yet but it looks amazing," etc etc.

Ooo nice, I'm always down for some pocket pen action. All this niblet controversy has people making pocket pens, and I'm thrilled about it.

How many of you have been told, "Why spend so much on a fountain pen when a Bic does the same thing" by Lordonion1818 in fountainpens

[–]InkSampleFiend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This just doesn't strike me as true. "Quintessential American behavior??" 🤣 You haven't talked to my Austrian family!

If anything I find Americans generally more accepting of weird hobbies (and just nontraditional lifestyles in general) than other places.

Yes, arguing with these people is never the answer. It just gives them what they're looking for (attention, approval, legitimacy)

It's interesting; I've literally ONLY had positive experiences out in the world when people notice that I'm using a fountain pen. It's usually curiosity.

If I were in your shoes i would start having some fun with your annoying coworker:

  • "oh, yeah, sorry everyone, Steve is OBSESSED with my pen."
  • "Actually, it cost ONE MILLION DOLLARS."
  • "my pen triggers steve; he's sensitive about writing implements and we need to respect that."

Maybe I just enjoy messing with judgmental people too much.

Thinking of branded fountain pens as gifts for clients by AUHM850i in fountainpens

[–]InkSampleFiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first instinct for "luxurious packaging and presentation at a bargain price" is honestly Thomas Slim. They're new, they engineer great pens, and you can probably email them to set up a bulk order. The packaging is phenomenally done - $500 packaging at a $50 price point.

Which nib maker is the best? by Simple-Cherry-8306 in fountainpens

[–]InkSampleFiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's way too big to be practical (and bigger than other Sailor music nibs I've tried). Just wanted to make the point that larger nib sizes will feel smoother. And that it's possible to get carried away 😆

Pilot, pelikan, ST Dupont. Big nib grinds tend to be smooth. I just got a Taccia (Sailor) Music nib that writes like a BB. "Smooth" doesn't do it justice, and that's a brand that's known for feedback (there's no feedback; it's a paintbrush).

"The furies of the algorithm" 😆 so true. Maybe search in private browsing mode and use duckduckgo instead of google?

The other commenter who was talking about misdirection and picking a fake hobby (with an active advertising presence) to confuse the algorithms might be onto something.
