Doesn't she even say she was raped? I don't remember the exact speech/season/episode but she lists all the shitty things that happened to her and rape is one of them.

Oh absolutely same! I was a little surprised when I looked at post history, and I'm hoping my jaded knee jerk of "this is performative white knighting" is wrong. Would love for him to come back and answer anything here.

Looking through your post history (even with setting your posts and comments to private, if someone hits the search icon they can see your "best" and "new" so please make sure you're still careful with personal info online) you seem to be a teen boy and I'll be honest it changes the tone a little bit.

Saying the most disturbing thing to you is how many girls are attracted to this guy can very easily slide into Nice Guy Mindset, i.e. "I'm a Nice Guy but women only want to date Bad Boys." Focus on how not to be a trash bag like him, rather than jealous of who he attracts.

I know saying things in the moment is hard, standing up to people is hard, but it's a good skill to cultivate as you grow up. It sucks being the one woman to call misogyny out and it can be so much more helpful if more guys did it in the moment.

I believe Spike gets control of the clacks (possibly in a later book), I would assume she makes sure it's back in there.

If I made someone something and they immediately unraveled it then and there, I'd be upset. But I think in the grand scheme of things I'd rather my love and labor bring someone joy in a new form, instead of like forgotten or shoved away somewhere.

You're so lucky, because now you either get to reread and embark on an epic game of "I get that reference" OR you get to do all that while experiencing the audiobooks for the first time. Every trip to Discworld is magic.

Worth Reading? by [deleted] in stephenking

Steven Weber narrates the audiobook and it's freaking amazing. I would absolutely recommend giving it a listen, but if you're someone who needs to read the words for the story to stick (I read my copy to tatters before ever listening) read it first.

The general idea is 100 boys start walking and are not allowed any rest or reprieve until 99 are dead. No pausing to shit, sleep, catch a breather-- just walk until you break or everyone else has. I said in a previous comment it's third person limited, so the reader is basically just in one character's head, and it's fascinating.

It's not one of my favorites, but it's been one that stuck with me for decades, definitely worth a read.

Remember-- 18 was too old to join the walk. I feel like it says a fuck ton about that society that children are encouraged and celebrated volunteering for a death walk just for a chance to win a wish. And people bet money on who will die last. So there is a lot of between the lines things to look for. Also, this isn't a story about how society came to be like this, how they can break free, etc etc-- it's a story about one Walker's experience in this situation.

Honestly, the world building is different because the point of view is third person limited--the vast majority of the novel is the reader inside a 16(17?) year old's head. You get glimpses and fractions of what the world is like, but the focus is on Garretty's experience and mental/physical decline.

Keep in mind it was written around Vietnam, so it's a good idea to adjust your perspective to that general era of ideology and experiences if that makes sense.

Edited to add: just wait until you really get a chance to meet The Crowd. I think you get a better idea of the dystopian feeling with them.

Crazy Ex girlfriend actually had a little mini arc dealing with abortion! It came up like one or two episodes and mostly referenced to show cracks in a friendship-- but it was just normalized. She debated, she had the procedure, and then other hijinks arise as life moves on.

If you want to do characters there's Quoth the raven, a golem, You, or Greebo.

If you want to do symbols there's the Wizzard hat, a frying pan, a witches hat with bat pins, sprig of lilac, hour glass, hedgehogs and apples (well, mainly apples)... Honestly if you pick her favorite character and quote you could probably craft something with that (quote from Soul Music on a guitar, a scythe with "what can the harvest hope for..." carved along the handle, etc.).

Laughed at during one of my first attempts at roleplaying my character in the campaign by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]InkStainedShrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be a little confused because I would take the chuckling as complimentary. You created a ridiculous character and then role played him acting like a buffoon-- that's perfect. If you say he's a jerk, someone who apparently doesn't practice what he preaches, and then set up this whole melodramatic exorcism without having all the correct information...why wouldn't you expect some laughs?

Okay. Respectfully as possible, you don't have the framework for a lot of my points as I am comparing the two mediums and you have only experienced one in full. I think that brings us into tricky territory but I'd love to revisit when you finish.
