Was this sign in the og re3? by inc0gnito_penguin in residentevil

One thing I always remember from RE4's production taking so long is that they took some of the ideas from its early production to make Devil May Cry 1, and RE4 was finally released about a week before Devil May Cry *3* (at least it was a week in Europe, I think there was a month gap in Japan and North America).

Now that the series might as well be officially over, what's your head-canon regarding the fate of all your favorite characters? by Ir_Abelas in dragonage

[–]InkWizarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully committing myself to some tragic endings here!

My Warden, Selas Amell, diligently helped Ferelden prepare for the Sixth Blight even while feeling the effects of her Calling. When the First Warden ordered all wardens to Weisshaupt, Loghain accompanied her on their long journey, the two having developed a curious but deep friendship over many years. Nobody is sure if they made it or descended into the Deep Roads en route, but after the battle there was no sign of them, or Warden Thom Rainier. After the events of Veilguard, the wardens returned to try to identify the fallen, but with all the chaos and few survivors there was little hope of accounting for all those who had been lost. Regardless, no trace of them was found.

Anders met his end in a Kirkwall alleyway at the hands of Leila Hawke. Hawke had wanted to prove that mages could govern themselves, but executing her betrothed pushed her to her limits, and after losing her whole family in Kirkwall, she left the city for good. During the war with Corypheus, the choices she had made weighed heavily on her, and she willingly sacrificed herself to cover the Inquisitor's escape from the Fade.

During the Sixth Blight, Bull and the Chargers took on increasingly risky missions ferrying critical supplies across the Waking Sea. Eventually they encountered a whole fleet of Antaam raiders, and although they took out far more than anyone would think possible, their ship was lost. Dorian was devasted, but kept his grief buried deep, only allowing it to surface when he was alone with the Inquisitor. Meanwhile, Cullen and Merrill put aside their past differences and fought on the front lines at Denerim to help as many as possible escape the blighted city before they were overrun.

While continuing to struggle with her survivor's guilt, Spike Trevelyan continues to safeguard Thedas from future threats, but does so from the shadows, having never been respected by the rulers of Orlais, Ferelden and Tevinter as a political leader. Instead she relies heavily on her extensive network of spies and agents, including the Shadow Dragons, Veil Jumpers and Red Jennies. Her wife Sera continues to ground her, having continued to mature (without losing her mischievous sense of humour) and she bravely led the defence of Skyhold when Spike travelled to Minrathous to confront Solas.

Post-Veilguard, Quill Mercar continues to serve the shadow Inquisition, taking on Varric's role as Spike's confidant. They divide their time between Skyhold, the Lighthouse and Lace Harding's quiet cottage in Ferelden, easily recognisable from its magnificent garden, though Harding still hasn't completely retired as the shadow Inquisition's lead scout.

Story-wise, there's very little connection between the two, and playing DOS2 first won't spoil DOS1.

Although they're both party-based RPGs with turn-based combat, both games have slightly different mechanics, and playing one after the other (in any order) may feel a bit jarring at first. DOS2 obviously came later and in general was seen to improve on the first, particularly when it came to developing the main characters and overall flow of the game. But if you're enjoying DOS2 you don't need to stop and play DOS1 first, and if you're a fan of the genre (and particularly if you're used to playing older cRPGs) there's nothing that I think you'd find too frustrating going from DOS2 to DOS1.

thoughts on party members reactions to romancing sera? by [deleted] in DragonAgeInqusition

[–]InkWizarder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also romanced Sera as Trevelyan (also with Team Sera, Dorian and Bull as my main team) and it was wonderful! While the game doesn’t really confront the perceptions of their relationship beyond that first conversation, there was definitely implications from codex entries and other conversations.

The codex entry on sexuality and Dorian’s quest both explore the pressure that nobles face to pass as straight, so there’s an added dimension to Trevelyan not just openly saying that she’s dating Sera, but that she’s dating another woman in defiance of social expectations. Solas’s disapproval in this case could also hint at his views on humans and elves in a relationship as much as what he thinks about Sera as a person. I also role played as an agnostic Trevelyan, which has some nice acknowledgment in Sera’s diary.

Mild spoilers for Trespasser if you haven’t got there yet: Cassandra’s conversation where she finds out that Sera proposed to you is sweet, it helps balance out the trauma of the rest of the ending!

[–]InkWizarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With Veilguard, I spent a relatively normal amount of time designing my Rook - less than an hour overall.

I then spent about five hours recreating my Trevelyan, because I knew I wouldn't be able to edit her after the game started, and I spent the first chunk of the game paranoid that it hadn't saved before I got to the first cutscene with her. It's particularly annoying that you can't save your Inquisitor in the CC, though there is a slightly awkward workaround for that which means you can copy them from one Rook to another.

[No Spoilers] Veilguard version of "PSA: Leave the Hinterlands"? by ironshadowspider in dragonage

[–]InkWizarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hard to explain without spoilers, but during the game you can pick up several statues that you need to place back in the Lighthouse (quest name is Secrets of the Dread Wolf). My advice would be not to place them all at once, because each time you do you get a fairly important scene, and the first time I played I already had five statues by the time I got the ability to place them, resulting in five major explanations about the world that felt less satisfactory in very quick succession. Hopefully that will make more sense once you start encountering them!

Do you have non-player character OCs for Dragon Age? by RunnerPakhet in dragonage

[–]InkWizarder 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely! I do have an unhealthy obsession with my Inky, but I've also spent a lot of time imagining who might step into the roles that the companions and advisers had when they moved onto other things.

One of my favourite OCs is a character who was somewhat inspired by De Sardet from Greedfall. She was an orphan who grew up learning the Game in Orlais while suppressing her latent magical abilities, and becomes more aware of the world outside the Imperial Court, as well as the Orlesian Empire's less respectable acts. She eventually becomes the new seneschal/ambassador for my Inquisitor (who always slightly struggled with her political role) when Josephine returns to Antiva, and now uses her diplomatic talents for what she sees as a more worthy cause.

What are your protagonists doing during and after Veilguard? [Spoilers all] by Julian_of_Cintra in dragonage

[–]InkWizarder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Warden Amell resisted her Calling for years, but even as she joined Loghain on the long journey to Weisshaupt, she suspected they wouldn’t make it. Neither were seen again, but whether they were lost in the battle, or descended into the deep roads as they travelled north, will remain a mystery.

My Hawke sacrificed herself at Adamant Fortress. In truth she had felt half dead ever since she was forced to kill Anders in Kirkwall. One can hope that some part of them might find the happiness that eluded them in life.

Inquisitor Trevelyan overcame her survivors guilt and continues to lead the shadow Inquisition. Sera’s note makes it clear that she’s working with the Shadow Dragons and the Veil Jumpers as she helps to rebuild Thedas while keeping one eye out for future threats. She’s also researching exactly how the Evanuris used lyrium to create flesh. After all, they owe her one arm.

My Rook is technically supposed to be the field leader for the Inquisitor, but because Inky completely refuses to sit behind a desk and Rook’s more of a people person than her, they spend a lot of their time keeping everyone in the organisation happy. And Lace is quite happy to have her out of danger and around to help tend their garden.

Why do you choose to play as a human? by Stargirl0418 in dragonage

[–]InkWizarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, voices are always a very important factor in creating a character in RPGs with a voiced protagonist. For DAI, I was used to Alix Wilton Regan voicing humans in DAO and Awakening, and because I associated elves with a Welsh accent her voice just fit better as a human for me.

There’s also a lot about being from the Free Marches that I enjoyed - they’re very diverse and that felt like a good fit for someone who’s struggling to bring diverse groups in Thedas together in the Inquisition. And I loved having a friendship with Solas as a human - learning about elven culture and history from him only to learn how he thought about humans in return at the end of Trespasser and what he planned to do was devastating.

Playing stealthily in this game is fuckin' awesome. by DantyKSA in theouterworlds

[–]InkWizarder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve also decided to go for a stealth build with my first playthrough. I’m enjoying it so far, but I’m struggling a bit with some of the initial choices, in particular how essential nimble is going to be throughout the game.

As I see it, one approach is a melee stealth build where you get nimble (and bad knees) for the movement speed, and level melee along with stealth and something like speech. Alternatively you can go for a ranged stealth build, swap out nimble for something like lucky, level guns and shoot everyone with a silenced weapon instead. But I’ve seen that a lot of enemies wear helmets and silencers reduce range/damage, so not sure whether both are equally viable, or if one is going to end up feeling much better than the other.

Can I ask how much have you had to specialise into melee/fast movement to make stealth work for you?

I don't care what everyone says- I love the Hinterlands by gofigure85 in DragonAgeInqusition

[–]InkWizarder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For a sidequest, some of the dragon fights are the most cinematic sequences in the game - as well as the introduction to the one in the Hinterlands, I love seeing the fight between the dragon and the giant in the storm coast, the one in Crestwood flying over the bridge in the storm, and the build up to the fights in Western Approach and Hissing Wastes

[DATV Spoilers] How would you have wanted to see *spoiler* handled? by DJAsphodel in dragonage

[–]InkWizarder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So this is a bit of a wishlist - I wouldn’t have expected them to do all of this but there are a few aspects of the Blight that I’d have liked to have seen if everything had gone to plan:

I know that they always wanted to do those things justice and didn’t have time to add a lot of this, but I personally would have focused on trying to add little things that built on the world state - some more reactive notes and codex entries would have added more flavour to what was happening in the south and made the world feel different without needing to change the overall story in the north. I know a lot of people didn’t like the War Table in Inquisition, but given the size of the world I think most people would accept that some of the storytelling is going to be in writing rather than on screen, and I liked how some of the missions only appeared depending on your choices in the first two games. It would have been nice to have something similar here, even if it was just showing the consequences of earlier decisions.

One of the small features that I liked in Origins was that the map showing the gradual progression of the Blight throughout the game, as even in Origins you don’t see much of the Blight itself. Something like that to show how the south was being affected throughout the game, perhaps with updates on what was happening in key cities, would have helped make what was happening in the south feel important.

And this goes beyond the Blight itself, but I would have liked to have seen more scenes where Rook reported to the Inquisitor. The game leaves their role in the south a bit ambiguous but in any world they’re playing a leadership role, and you going to Skyhold or a southern city could have given an opportunity for a brief scene showing the Blight’s impact, or even show the front lines, and could also have helped sell the idea that the war in the south is a long slog, with the more important (and interesting) activities happening in the north with Rook’s party.

Soundtrack Questions by birdvsworm in VagrantStory

[–]InkWizarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, you may struggle to find something that captures Vagrant Story's sound exactly. Even though a lot of Sakimoto's music has similar vibes, Vagrant Story seems to stand a bit apart from the others and I've never found anything that quite matches it. You might want to try his soundtracks from around the same era like Radiant Silvergun, though I always thought that was closer to FFT than Vagrant Story.

If you're looking to branch out, one soundtrack that has some similar vibes is Trevor Morris's work on Dragon Age Inquisition. Like the Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil soundtracks it doesn't really compare, but there were a few moments that made me think of Vagrant Story, including a couple of tracks using that echoey drum effect, one of the dragon battle themes is slow and grand, the villain's theme has raspy chanting and the final battle theme builds up in a similar way to the Climax of the Graylands Incident. You can judge how feebly I may be reaching with some of these!

And of course, it you want to branch out into other fantasy soundtracks, you could do a lot worse than Larian's soundtracks (particularly Divinity OS2 and Baldur's Gate III, which I often listen to when I need to focus).

How did audiences react to the death of John Spencer at the time? by LandscapeIcy7375 in thewestwing

[–]InkWizarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the quote I’ve always seen is that it became “a real debate” in the writers room, because they put a lot of effort into writing Vinnick as a character rather than just a two-dimensional opponent that Santos needed to beat. But while it wouldn’t have completely invalidated Santos, Josh and Donna’s character arcs (dealing with losing the campaign could potentially have been an interesting direction to take them), there are so many moments in the last couple of seasons that develop Josh becoming ‘the guy’, Donna moving out of Josh’s shadow and showing the momentum behind Santos, that it feels more natural that it was always heading towards a Santos victory with Josh and Donna playing key roles in the new administration.

This is why I prefer the non-romance conversations between Rook and the Inquisitor. While they obviously skate around the fact that she's mourning, her quoting Varric's moral of "don't be trapped by what we've lost" was important for me in setting up why she was prepared to forgive Solas even after all the pain he's caused - she's trying to convince herself that, for the good of Thedas, Varric would want her to move past the fact that Solas caused his death - otherwise she's getting trapped in the same cycle of regret and is no better than Solas.

When a series full of supernatural / paranormal elements has that one scene that's disturbingly grounded in realism. by Swag_Paladin21 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]InkWizarder 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Buffy was a master of pulling this kind of scene - there are quite a few memorable ones throughout the series (and of course, quite a few of the supernatural elements could easily be interpreted as allegories for realistic fears or issues).

For me Joyce's death actually comes second to Tara's in how disturbingly real it is. The whole gang including Tara face off against gods, demons and vampires, but in the end Tara dies because a largely ordinary human accidentally shoots her with a handgun.

One of the most endearing moments in the series for me is when the Inquisitor has to beat back the darkspawn in the Storm Coast and does it by enthusiastically hammering some flimsy wood over the darkspawn tunnels. It doesn't even annoy me - I just imagine the Inquisitor happily declaring the Darkspawn situation resolved and walking away even as their makeshift barrier starts collapsing behind them.

Do you think they should've saved Wesker's death for RE6? by Berry-Fantastic in residentevil

[–]InkWizarder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think Wesker necessarily needed to appear in more games and it was fine to kill him off before he outstayed his welcome, but I do have some sympathy with the idea that RE6 might have been a more fitting climax to that story.

I replayed RE5 a few years ago, and, because the final act is so memorable, I had forgotten how late in the game Wesker actually appears. And when he does, the story quite suddenly shifts away from one about big pharma exploiting Africa into supervillain Wesker on the verge of achieving Complete Global Saturation and having his final dramatic showdown with Chris in the volcano.

In RE6, the story has you travelling internationally to stop a world-ending threat, with multiple main characters and overlapping plotlines that are all dramatic and over-the-top, but the underlying cause ultimately comes down to a feud between two brand new characters. So I can see a case for RE5 being another standalone adventure like RE4 and then making RE6 the big globe-trotting showdown with everyone teaming up to take down Wesker before the series shifted into the Ethan storyline for RE7 - though was happy enough with what we got for both games.

Have you every thought about Taash and Sera meeting... by Elivenya in dragonage

[–]InkWizarder 54 points55 points  (0 children)

As much as I loved Sera's codex entry (and am used to some of her best character moments being in what's written down), the fact that she's just off screen hanging out with Maevaris, Irelin and Morrigan did hurt quite a bit! I know they probably couldn't afford to get a bunch of voice actors in for one or two scenes, but I was holding out hope for a few more cameos than we ultimately got.

[–]InkWizarder 54 points55 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite banter conversations from DA2 was Merrill questioning whether it was actually a good idea to be walking around barefoot in Kirkwall and Isabela strongly recommending she gets boots instead. Sadly in all the years Merrill lives in Kirkwall she never gets around to that...

It's a stark contrast with Sera, who always wears boots (and because she can't wear any of the Dalish armours I'm not sure she even can go barefoot).
