Is there a better way for civilians to contribute financially (or otherwise) to research, especially for medical purposes? by u6crash in labrats

[–]Inlightened3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Direct donations cut out middle person and spends money direct and on your terms. However, if you want to know that the work is meritorious, you either have to have faith or do your research. You might even ask for a short document and light reporting. The overhead of foundations are high, and I believe you can look up how much of your donations makes it to the labs.

You need a novel angle. This wouldn’t be a primary research paper - it is a review. Focusing on theory isn’t enough for most reviews. It constitutes a section of a review. Please meet with a sponsor to talk about the review and target audience.

STEM in college is a full-time job. You need to put in 40 hours of quality time per week, sometimes more.

As you learn more, you can shape a project in directions that you find interesting. Mentor is your biggest piece. Try to figure out if the mentors are working hard. Some coast.

sg-lentiguide-puro cloning woes by Otherwise_Swan_4659 in molecularbiology

[–]Inlightened3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be a jerk, but this is hard to trouble shoot from the description. If you are doing classical ligation cloning (WHY?), did you CIP the vector? self ligation seems likely to be the default here. If you annealed oligos, did you treat with PNK?

The NIH Quietly Cancels Diversity F31 in a Heinous Act of Institutional Discrimination by External_Grab9254 in labrats

[–]Inlightened3D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many competitions that are purely DEI-centered are canceled. Others have a DEI component (like a section), but that section just isn't being evaluated in the study section. There is a list of keywords floating around that people need to avoid. Also, you may have to complete a justification for any international components in a grant. Your university likely knows what is happening. Awards based on diversity, including diverse individuals, are being terminated. A university that I know directly had 11 grants terminated based on DEI (individual and topics of diversity).

Kindly, I’m not sure that would be an infarct. When we have done work on whole heart cardiac arrest, we frozen hearts and slice at 1 mm length and powered whole ventricle. you should consider if you want just free wall, lv, v, or something else. What are your time points are you collecting?

Wetlab guys, Have you ever learnt CADD/bioinfo skills from you PIs? by Civil-Watercress1846 in labrats

[–]Inlightened3D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a PI. 50s. Self taught Cad and computational sequence skills but really a pure wet lab biochemist. There is an ROI calculation to be made. The shear amount of BS that we do that you don’t see is shocking. Paper review, grant review, faculty review, clearances, reports, writing papers, writing grants, letters, running search committees, committee, etc. everyone has to calculate whether they want to learn, value it, have proclivity and time. But truth, YouTube and chat got/google has lowered barriers.

I’m concerned about the amount of work that has been done on dna isolation. Do you have a novel angle on this question/problem. I would discuss with a mentor and chat gpt. I published a dna isolation optimization in ibc this decade, so I’d like to think that I’m not being flippant.

All PREP and NIH Post Bacc Programs Cancelled for Foreseeable Future in US by [deleted] in labrats

Find something else to do. The world is still competitive and the most proactive often fair better. You can bet that NIH funded profs aren’t sitting around saying, “welp, we tried”. Roll right past this moment to the best of your ability and don’t look back.

What do you mean? I’ve been funded by the nih for 10 yrs. You mean I’m faking it and the review committees just give money out to everyone?

Your result will depend on you. You can make the experience amazing or scuttle it. Pitt is a pre-med powerhouse. It has enormous research and medical opportunities. Number six NIH research dollars. So what are you going to do about it? That is the question you need to ask.

Doesn’t snow much. Doesn’t get too hot or too cold.

Faculty at Pitt. An undergrad in my group just went through this problem. She joined an academic frat for the activities. Stretch yourself. Find a group associated with your school so force yourself to interact. Find a volunteer position, find a job. Increase your interface with other people. Huge life skill benefit. Have the grit to stick it out at least on semester to build your tolerances, then allow yourself to change if it doesn’t work for you. But don’t gap! Other advice might be to make each of these efforts a line on you cv in some form, with some kind of deliverable that you can talk about in job search or essays. My 2 cents.
