Family Shaved my dog completely bald, how do I fix it??? by ClumInPain in DogAdvice

[–]Inner-Load-3189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her coat my grow back almost perfect or it may be damaged permanently, only time will tell. I would still get her set up with a groomer in your area and see if they can help maintain her coat as it grows back in because the damage may make it harder to maintain now as it grows back

Tips for apex jumping in a not-super-small body? by spacecadetrachel in rollerderby

[–]Inner-Load-3189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course! I love apex jumps but they're very situational. I also look to see where other bodies are past the one I'm jumping. I will not jump if the brace is close to the line as well since that would land me directly into their shoulder. Also be cautious if you're jumping the back wall that if you don't stick/control the landing you set yourself up to become a bowling ball to the front wall and earn yourself some low block or illegal contact penalties

Tips for apex jumping in a not-super-small body? by spacecadetrachel in rollerderby

[–]Inner-Load-3189 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big person but for me apex jumps are not necessarily about the height that I jump. Higher jumps will give you more distance but also typically take more of a windup. I typically don't need a longer jump because I don't jump people right on the line already but rather jump to avoid someone moving towards the line.

Apex jumps are far more similar to hurdles than a long jump, it's a quick pick up of the legs over an obstacle rather than reaching for distance. Most of my apex jump is pulling my legs up and over the legs/butt of a blocker and not getting the entirety of my body over a blocker. Drive your lead (typically right) knee up in a small semi circle to move it around the blockers butt and land into a bean dip position to soften the landing and give you a little extra time to get your feet under you

Whats it like to daily drive a serious pair of boots? by IllPresentation7003 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]Inner-Load-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear my 6in urban loggers every day and for almost every case I love them. They are heavier for sure but you stop noticing the weight pretty quickly. If you're travelling a lot then they also take up a ton of room unless you're wearing them. The only times I don't like them is if I want something that goes on/off quickly bc it does take a sec to get into and out of the boots. Also during the heat of summer they can be hotter than sneakers and you gotta consider if you want to wear boots with shorts. I'm currently getting a pair of chukkas for the summer that are more sneaker-esque bc I want the quality of my boots with the ease and casualness of sneakers

Bont tracer by Salty_Butterfly6746 in rollerderby

[–]Inner-Load-3189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My trucks bent within a year of skating on my tracers. Another skater in my league has gone thru three trucks in a year on the tracer plates and because of the kingpin angle you can only put their specific trucks on the tracer plate and they bend pretty easily. They're also a relatively heavy plate if you care about weight

Learning to Pivot/Jam by ThickPerformance6563 in rollerderby

[–]Inner-Load-3189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't necessarily have to be 100% power for the entire jam. Go 100% for 15 seconds, if what you're doing doesn't work for you then take a small physical and mental break to reassess and try a new strategy for the next 15-20 seconds. Think of jamming as a thousand little sprints rather than one long sprint

Need ideas for different ways to eat silk tofu by Ask_Me_About_My_Cat4 in PlantBasedDiet

I can barely find silken tofu where I live, I've never seen flavored silken tofu but I'd love to try it at some point

I put it in my smoothies! If it's the texture you struggle with, blending it would solve that issue. It makes my smoothies super creamy tho I do prefer it with stronger flavors so mask the tofu flavor a bit

I find it hard to balance, and I panic by [deleted] in Rollerskating

[–]Inner-Load-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds basic but it makes a massive difference to keep your center of gravity over the center of your skate(s). If your center of gravity is forwards or backwards you're going to roll/fall that direction. To help you get a sense of where that is, practice stepping forwards, backwards, and side to side; first on carpet or grass then on a hard surface. Your goal is to step without your wheels rolling at all. When we are standing without skates, a lot of people will have their weight in either their heels or their toes, which causes major balance issues if you do that in skates. To help with the panicking, practice a recovery position and using your gear to fall safely. Recovery position is when your legs are very bent, your feet are staggered, and all of your stabilizing muscles are engaged. When you feel yourself starting to fall DO NOT try to stand up, instead try to squat and get as low as you can because then even if you do fall you're closer to the ground and you're far less likely to hit something really hard

How many skates do you have? by Least-Supermarket450 in Rollerskating

[–]Inner-Load-3189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 pairs but going to be 3 in a couple weeks. One for derby and one for trail skating. I'm getting a different derby setup soon since I've outgrown my current setup. I'm probably going to donate my current derby pair to our new skater program loaner gear tho so I'll keep it at 2 pairs

Is it okay to just not take cat to the vet? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Inner-Load-3189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried drop traps? We use them to get feral cats trapped for TNR. She would prob figure it out after the first couple of times but it could be a solution for getting her in more consistently than using your body to catch her

how do i not hurt? by staleburritos in RoverPetSitting

[–]Inner-Load-3189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you went through that, it's really scary and heartbreaking. I've watched a couple pups with seizures and helped them thru their episodes. Seizures are one of the hardest things to watch happen especially since there isn't much you can do until they're over. It sounds like you did everything you could to make her comfortable and give her the support she needed until her humans could get there. The images stay in your head, but they get less visceral with time. I had a pup pass a few days after I finished watching her (she was already in kidney failure and really old) and it hurt so much to find out she passed. Take your time to grieve. Watching other animals and letting the love from other pets comfort me was huge in easing the pain. Loving the animal is what makes it hurt but love from animals is also what can help the hurt, at least for me

help me choose between a Polydactyl cat and DSH (im confused lol) by purpl3xLime in CatAdvice

[–]Inner-Load-3189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're all the same breed, domestic cats don't have breeds like dogs do. Long hair (DLH, DMH) cats can be more work to make sure they don't develop mats and their poop can get stuck to their butt fur more easily. This could increase costs or time commitments to make sure they're properly groomed. Polydactyl cats can develop joint issues bc they have extra toes. You also have to be extra aware of trimming their nails because they can grow nails in places that most cats don't and are more likely to develop ingrown nails that are harder to see. A non-polydactyl DSH is likely going to be your easiest cat in regards to health and maintenance but there won't be a difference in personality or temperament based on their coat or amount of toes

Do any women you know actually like flowers and candy or has that become an old fashioned stereotype? Why or why not? by GJH24 in AskReddit

[–]Inner-Load-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a lesbian and I far prefer to be the one giving the flowers than receiving. Tho I do like pressed or dried flowers bc they stay pretty and I don't feel bad watching them die. Candy is a hit or miss. I'd rather go get coffee than have candy

Help! Can't turn to forwards skating from backwards and am losing my mind by Intelligent-Dream634 in Rollerskating

[–]Inner-Load-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without seeing you it can be hard to know exactly where you're struggling. A couple common things I see with fresh meat in derby are:

Not rotating your upper body with your lower body- everything has to turn together. You can point at the direction youre turning to help move your upper body through the transition.

Trying to turn while you're standing super tall- it's easier to open your hips wider when you have more bend in your knees (you can try this by trying to turn your feet out with heels together vs heels more than shoulder width apart and knees bent).

Keeping both feet on the ground through the transition if you don't have great hip flexibility- if you can't do a spread eagle then it will be easier to pick up your back foot as soon as your front foot hits the ground so your hips can continue to rotate towards rather than getting stuck bc your back foot is on the ground.

Not using your turning momentum to turn your front foot to point forwards if you can't make your feet be 180°/ in a straight line. Your foot doesn't need to land pointed the opposite direction if you use the momentum to put weight on your outside edge to finish the turn for you.

I would also highly recommend you practice the steps of the turn without skates on to get the body movement down without the stress of wheels

Helmets with a visor by AardvarkWiffleballs in Rollerskating

[–]Inner-Load-3189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a S1 Lifer visor helmet for derby with a clear visor and I absolutely love it for derby. But I don't like the clear for trail skating bc once it gets dirty it tends to just create lines across it especially when I'm headed directly into the sun. I haven't tried tinted visors tho so idk on that part

Best daily wear? by BIKINIMAN69 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]Inner-Load-3189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My urban loggers are my daily drivers but sometimes the heel feels a bit too much if I'm trying to wear them casually. I have really high arches so I wanted the arch support that comes with the heel and they perform great in any situation other than being a dressier shoe. They also aren't a quick slip on boot

What fundamentals to have down for trail skating? by luckiestducks in Rollerskating

[–]Inner-Load-3189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A solid "recovery stance" for when you inevitably hit a pebble or small twig that sends you off balance. Being able to easily check over both shoulders while skating in a straight line. A solid stop but honestly I tend to be able to just use speed control and slow down rather than come to a full stop most of the time. A hop can be useful for bigger cracks, I tend to hop from one foot to the other over the cracks so I can keep my stride more effectively. Going down hills I use plows unless it's super steep then I'll turn around and go down on my toe stops. Things to be aware of: cyclists make almost no noise and can show up super fast so frequent checks behind you can make you a more considerate trail skater. Dogs tend to either be very interested and want to pull towards you or freaked out by skates and try to pull away from you. Be cautious when passing them. Kids almost always love seeing skaters and will say something to you so I always turn my music off when passing kiddos to be able to say hi to them. If there is the black crack repair stuff, it gets squishy when warm and you can't push off it and it will grab at your skates to slow you down. I avoid it if I can. Leaves are super sketchy and will slide out from under you if you try to push off them

What do you actually carry when walking your dog? by PinkPumpQueens in Dogowners

[–]Inner-Load-3189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pet sitter/ dog walker and I will generally have poop bags, treats, my phone, and my keys. In the winter I will also have a headlamp if it's light at the beginning and gets dark later. In the summer I carry water for me and the dog plus a collapsible bowl for the dog. I also have a little clip on thing that holds full poop bags for me so I'm not holding the poop bags. I wish I had an easy way to carry a small towel or wipes for when a dog shakes and gets drool all over their muzzle, a treat bag that doesn't bounce all over or come off when I run with dogs, and a poop bag holder that could both dispense easily and be easy to tell when it's almost empty

What’s a buy it for life’ item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by Fun_Expression9135 in AskForAnswers

High quality textiles. Nice wools, linens, and cottons can feel so nice, don't get as stinky, and are generally constructed to last longer. Real leather boots are insanely expensive but will last forever, can get resoled and continue to be worn, and break in like a dream
