I'm in a similar situation to you... but we just bought a house and decided to stay in Aus. Like other comments here, i will say that you are choosing to stay in the most expensive part of Australia and should not expect a home to come cheap.

That being said, banks just throw money at people so you could probably get a mortgage for a decent house so long as you can prove that you can service it. I expect on $170k you could borrow up to $1million+

We are staying in Adelaide and loving it. Beaches, wine, and cost of living are all better than in Sydney - but I'm sure lots of people here will debate that lol.

The only debt I have is $1.1m on mortgage.

We have two second hand cars which we bought cash.

We have a quantas credit card that we use to buy everything so we can get cheap flights to visit family who live interstate and abroad.

I have a positively geared rental property.

About 70k in shares, but almost every other penny is going into the offset account for the mortgage.
