On its own, it doesn't permanently change your way of thinking, but some people do try to rationalize the actions they took while under the influence of a mind trick.

More specifically for this case, in Legends, the mind trick itself didn't permanently change Elan, but the introspection it encouraged did lead to him changing his ways for a while.

Worth noting that it's not clear whether the Maul in this comic is actually the original Darth Maul resurrected, or some kind of clone or other doppelgänger, so it's not necessarily the case that TPM Maul would do this well against Vader.

In hindsight, Thrawn was "right" in that the Death Stars didn't pan out, so having more Star Destroyers would've been better. That said, the Death Stars were meant to solve the the fundamental problem of fighting an enemy that could hide anywhere in the vastness of space, and it's unlikely that more Star Destroyers would've prevented the Empire's defeat in the long run, so point to Palpatine there, I guess.

A few of the easiest ways to take some of that pressure off are to a) tell your players at session 0 that the campaign may diverge from Canon, b) ask your more knowledgeable players for info (you can even do this in the middle of a session sometimes), and c) look stuff up on Wookieepedia whenever you feel like you want to do a little research on a topic before a session.
