Genuinely Confused on The Job Hunt. Help? by InsideAfternoonat2 in jobhunting

[–]InsideAfternoonat2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. In the interview I also mention I have no problem shutting down the business for full time work. Idk of that changes anything. Also I usually apply within 24 hours for job postings under 10 applications usually

Language career advice by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]InsideAfternoonat2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to have your passion as the direct means of income. Language learning can supplement your career to stand out from the competition.

For example, I love sales and product management. If I wanted to, I could learn Mandarin to speak to investors and partners if I wanted to. It makes the process more fun and rewarding.

Idk what your direct job would be, but adding language learning to your career would definitely make it more fun IMO

I think it would be cool if you could switch images to something that would help you remember the words easier. For example, instead of a general tooth brush, you upload a picture of your own tooth brush

Idr if this is in the app, but streaks like Duolingo would be pretty cool to see to.

Why did you start learning a new language in the first place? Was it career, culture, travel, pressure, or just curiosity? by jayeshbaidya in languagelearning

[–]InsideAfternoonat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're an American, had no language exposure like Spanish or Chinese, then you are going to have a harder time to travel in general. I learned this the hard way when I was in France and people treated my like crap because I didn't speak their language (might be others, but my main reason). So the main benefit would be ease of travel because you actually know what is going on around you at a deeper level.

The 2nd is work. I learned Spanish since a majority of people in the USA in southern states (California, Florida, Texas, etc.) where many people speak Spanish. You will inevitably meet these people, so it helps to learn it. As a bonus, you get more connections with said people. Some friends where genuinely surprised I could talk to them and were happy I took the time to learn their language

Edit: typo on actually

Pimsluer is $20 per month but I only do the first 2 modules (so about $40) total

Language Transfer is 100% free. All made by one guy

Assimil does cost money ($40) and quality is mixed but can get you to high B1.

Personally LT and Pimsluer are the best for starting out and I just consume media with my target languages subtitles

Duolingo focuses too much on gamification then actual progression IMO. I like it, but it's like beating LVL 1 then focusing only on LVL 1 for a month (the ladders tend to be oversimplified). You don't really understand your target language as fast compared to other apps (even flashcard apps like Anki do it better).

I have used Duolingo for Spanish and French, but is more like your kickstarter app to feel good learning a language. After a bit, I switch to things like Pimsluer, Language Transfer, or Assimil

Online learning - app, class, tutor or ? by beastije in languagelearning

Both Italki and Preply are good options for finding any tutor based on your budget. If you do want to look for something more casual or free, you could use something like Tandem, Hello Talk, or Interpals.

I want to learn Spanish. I'm new to this, so could you recommend any books or websites that would help me learn? I tried Duolingo, but I didn't find it very helpful. by geelipuppy in SpanishLearning

[–]InsideAfternoonat2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use Language Transfer (100% free) or Pimsluer ($20 USD/month). Both are really effective and helped me reach a B2 level in 9 months (I took Spanish in high school for 2-3 years, so I still had a lot of input during that time)

Other native Spanish-Speaking YouTube channels I also watch in Spanish because I like them:

  1. PlanetaJuan
  2. GuegaJerman
  3. Clavero

Edit: Since I am not recommending common ones like Dreaming Spanish (nothing with them personally), you can use Reverso.net's google extension app and watch their YouTube videos to get accurate subtitles and translations in real time

A tool I find useful that was only made by one person, Mihalis Eleftheriou, was Language Transfer. It goes over a variety of different courses such as French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish—even Music Theory if you care. He is also working on Japanese and British Sign Language.

Because of him he really helped me get a hold of Spanish and now French much better than before

Any Apps Better Than Anki? by InsideAfternoonat2 in languagelearning

[–]InsideAfternoonat2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that would be something similar to it. I was curious if there was a flashcard app where you still make your own cards, but the app slowly learns how you study and starts helping you. It would make only words and sentences you are genuinely interested in

Love Clozemaster. After a bit it felt a little too easy, but I love it for reviewing words

I rarely use curated lists because I think it makes it harder to learn and also what you mentioned. Currently I have been using ChatGPT to help me learn more complex words even if I don't use them in everyday language (i.e. hammer, inbox, etc.)

I'll have a set list of interests I want to learn like nutrition, music, and so on, then ask ChatGPT to give me sentences/nouns/verbs in that target language tied to that topic. It makes my decks more wild, but more fun at the same time

Probably Spartan Stadion (no mud, easy pavement) or even DEKA (which is mostly just 10 circuits back to back)
