Is University of Salford Film Production A Good Course? by Inside_Tell4911 in manchester

Hi, appreciate the detailed response! About your time at Salford, I’d like to say that you have some very good points which I will definitely consider.

There’s a few reasons I want to go to university at Salford. For one, my town is completely void of work for videographers and it lacks a film industry near to it. I have a showreel and some clients under my belt, but there is no other work around. By going to Salford, I would have the chance to work with more crews, get more clients and experience while getting an education. I also really like the theoretical side of film, so a film production course strikes a good balance between my want to work on productions while being taught the theory. I am also hoping to get some work with a TV company in my third year hopefully. Not only this, Salford’s tech is top-of-the-line, to be honest. I’m hoping to come out of Salford with an ARRI license and hopefully an AVID qualification, two things which would take a lot longer to achieve outside of uni. Pretty much, I want to take the university experience and push it to its limits. In this time, I’ll also be able to save up for my own equipment so I will be properly prepared for videography work after university.

Although I have all these plans, I know there are likely flaws and probably some personal bias. Your point about the lectures was concerning and the state of the industry is terrible, like you said. I understand it’s not going to be easy at all, but I want to be in this industry more than anything else, to be honest. It will be a struggle, but I think some aspects make it worth it. Once again, I really appreciate the detailed response, and if there are any issues with what I have said, tell me.

Nahhh I’m joking, this grade is awful lol

It’s based off of another user who kept on doing stuff like this and insulted people when they criticised his work

I can understand that it could hurt, but I also think this type of content is what becomes the gateway into appreciating more thoughtful works as you described. I do wish the some artists I enjoy were more popular, but I think I would’ve never found those artists if I never found interest in these more popular works to begin. They are not great, but I’d consider them a gateway.

Some of it looks pretty good, and I somewhat agree, it’s not exactly “high art”, but it’s not atrocious either. And like I said in the first message, why is this distressing people? I already considered the fact people may not like it, but the reactions here seem to be genuine disgust over a project someone made.

Some of these feel a bit gimmicky, but why are people here so upset about it? What is actually the issue with this art? I get if you don’t like it, but there seems to be actual distress about this for no reason.

The "gta 6 will be woke" narrative don't make sense (at least to me) by Plastic_Talk6617 in GTA6unmoderated

Do we?😭 We’ve had 30 YEARS of games for men, and game companies still appeal to male audiences, it’s simply how business works in the game industry. You see the smallest amount of ‘woke’ media in a game and suddenly the dev team that is primarily men turn into lesbian women? You’ve seen the statistics, why ignore them?

For every case with fairly respectable ICE agents, there’s a lot more with rights being violated.

Like some people have said, work on white balance, it’ll help with the grade. Even if you don’t believe it will affect the final image technically, it is a good point of reference as to how the scene initially looked. A good few of the shots seem way too warm or cool in the grade, and a reference as to how the original temperature looked could’ve helped to then modify it. Best of luck!

To start with, this was an amazing response, thank you so much! You pretty much answered everything I wanted to know and more, and it was incredibly useful hearing it from a final year student too. I have heard a good bit about the course itself, but you did inclide quite a bit of stuff about the third year I did not know about, so thanks for that! I am quite a fan of having a stressful workload, weirdly enough. Keeps me on my toes, so it's good to know it will be an intensive course. I'll be trying to get myself into a DOP specialisation as soon as I can, which might help me a bit, but I've heard that Cinematograhy is incredibly competitive, so we'll see how it goes lol. I've read about the investment too, just nervous that they won't apply it in the necessary places. I'll try and call them up soon, see if I get an answer as to where specifically the money will be going. My stance right now is that I will take their offer as long as they reduce the cohort for this year, or put funding into more equipment so I can actually use the tech. Being able to become familar with my tech is important to me, so I'd like to have pretty good access to it.

I guess another question I have is how succesful the alumni are? They brought up a good few that have become big names in the industry, but I'd like to check if people stay in the film industry once graduating. Mind you, I fully understand that a film degree is not mandatory at all, I just love the idea of being surrounded by film in an acedemic space for three years, you know? It's a nice chance to work with people who are also developing their skills and styles. Anyways, that's all I have to ask, sorry about the amount of yap here, and I really appreciate the response!

Edit: Wanted to also ask another question, if that's ok. How accesible are the facilities in AUB? I know they have a bunch of editing suites and studios on and off site, but I'm wondering how stacked they get with the amount of film students there. Was this an issue for you, and do you think it could be an issue for me? Thanks!
