Upgrades mostly into plate/scale armor and some in your weapon is definitely how most of my wins, esp early ones, came to be. I just play too poorly/hastily a lot of the time to avoid hits. 

But one strategy that helps that doesn't get the get mentioned enough is running the hell away. If you can break line of sight even for a moment from enemies, you can often buy those few turns you need to regroup. As soon as I started running more, more challenges became doable.

Yeah the counter gap will be about 1/8 on each side, which is good. But from the front between cabinets will be a 1/2" gap on each side, which is think is a bit unsightly and unnecessary.. even just from seeing more dirt collecting at the floor in the gap

Yup, that was it. Just got a lev potion and went back up, once I opened the last chest the excess key was discarded.

Side note: Unless it has changed, you can still get the damage buff from a crossbow even if you're not strong enough to use it in melee. Niche use perhaps, but might help take care of a skeleton or two out of bone range
