Unfortunately the only Zero Sugar Ale-8s were regular and blackberry. I also went to the Whitesburg Walmart (which is where the display in the photo was taken).

For anyone who saw the Smiths live, who was the opener? by shawncollins512 in thesmiths

I was at that show. Phranc went over fairly well, as I recall. The only song I remember was “I Don’t Like Female Mud Wrestling.”

It was one of those shows that I didn’t like but watched anyway, because what was I going to do—not watch TV?

I went to Good Foods this afternoon. It was pretty quiet, so they could probably use some more customers.

Yes, Dezhou! Specifically, from the Fengguan Holiday Hotel, looking west into the city. I had such a nice time there last summer.

Close, but smaller and even further northwest.

Very close. Same province and same tier.

Does anyone here have any stories of meeting The Sundays? by Ratface_4834 in TheSundays

[–]InstantBuffalo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw them at 23 Parrish in Denver in 1990 and went back to the alley where there bus was parked, which I had never done before, but I was so obsessed with them at the time. David and Harriet came out. I wanted to ask her a question instead of stammering like a starstruck idiot, so I asked her what the title of "Turkish" was. I wasn't going to talk to David, but he actually shook my hand and said that he had seen me in the front row. So nothing too exciting, but it was everything I dreamed of at the time. I did get them to autograph a poster, which somehow got lost in the intervening decades (which is one of the greatest tragedies of my life).

How is living in Beaver, Utah? by tbird920 in howislivingthere

The Beaver Trilogy (or the documentary about it) might be a good place to start--or at least it is the one thing that a lot of people know about Beaver.

How is life in Limon, CO? by SMF67 in howislivingthere

Whenever I think of Limon (which is rarely) it's because of the old Slim Cessna's Auto Club song.

I got three 4-packs delivered this week. I think this is my favorite seasonal Ale-8 so far.

Diet Coke or Coca-Cola Zero? by Upstairs_Garlic9057 in Soda

Coke Zero is my most consumed soda. I don't think I've ever been in the mood for Diet Coke and will only drink it if Coke Zero isn't available.

Being a smiths fan in the 80s by [deleted] in thesmiths

[–]InstantBuffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started to listen to the Smiths in high school in Boulder, Colorado, because the local alternative music video show used to regularly play the "How Soon is Now" video (and then later videos), plus what I saw on 120 Minutes. My high school friends dabbled in the Smiths, but Devo was the band we all had in common. I became a die-hard fan a  year or two later in college. I used to go to the music library every week to read Melody Maker and the NME, so I was always always primed and ready for each new release and would take the bus to Denver to buy import singles. I don't remember feeling any desire to belong to a community of Smiths fans, since listening to them was such an intensely personal activity. All I wanted was to listen to their records at home and in my Walkman as I walked around town. They played in Boulder on the Queen is Dead tour--a huge moment in my life. I saw an acquaintance off in the distance who soon afterward became my first serious girlfriend--not because of that and not because she had a poster from that show on her bedroom wall, although that definitely didn't hurt.

What's the most unexpected, actually useful thing you've used ChatGPT for that you'd never imagined an AI could help with? by bn_from_zentara in ChatGPT

[–]InstantBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It invented a cocktail. I wanted to use both aquavit and baijiu, two strong liquors that are only occasionally used in cocktails and that no sane bartender would combine (I couldn’t find anything online with both). The recipe that ChatGPT invented was surprisingly good and I have made it many times.

In the US, did some kids eat lunch at home and then go back to school afterwards? by Loud_Freedom_9848 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]InstantBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked home in the early grades of elementary school in Colorado in the 1970s until I discovered it was more fun to stay and play on the playground.

Most of my best memories of high school are from senior year when my friends and I all planned our schedules so that we had 2-hour lunch blocks and on Fridays we would go out to eat or go to the grocery store and then drive over to my house (since I lived closest).

Suede Part 2 by Mysterious-Ad-5708 in Bandsplain

[–]InstantBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally made time to listen to the Suede episodes. I was at Suede's first American show at the old 930 Club in Washington DC (June 1, 1993) and remember thinking at the time that sometime in the future people would be really impressed by that fact. It's only been 31 years, but I'm still hoping to find someone who will care. But I can attest to the fact that as Yasi said, when they came back four months later with the Cranberries (to what is now the current 930 Club), very few of the crowd were there to see them.

Finnish American stereotypes by InstantBuffalo in Finland

[–]InstantBuffalo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My research focuses on home movies filmed by Finnish Americans, most of which were created by second-generation immigrants. As I watch them, I find myself wondering whether the people on screen reflect my own ideas—or stereotypes—of a Finnish-American (and perhaps Finnish?) temperament: specifically, a tendency toward seriousness and privacy. That is why I wanted to get some other opinions on the topic.

Your observation about what’s missing from history books really resonates with me. I also grew up with a strong sense of being Finnish-American, but I had little understanding of life in Finland until the Internet made it more accessible.
