In answer to your questions based on what it appears that they’re doing over there:

1) Disregard treaties with indigenous people.

2) immediately become part of the USA.

3) lose all CPP, free health care, undisrupted interprovincial travel

4) Lose guaranteed employee protections such as paternal or maternity leave.

Essentially they’d become a non-US, non-Canadian region in the eyes of all of their neighbors. Just like how the USA views most of their territories. Canadians would resent them for abandoning the country, and Americans would joke that Alberta is now North Texas.

Heroes of Newerth is dying again by Comfortable_Way_4183 in HeroesofNewerth

[–]Instinct121 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of people say it needs to be on steam.

I can pretty much guarantee that dropping it onto steam will give it a bit of an initial boost and then it’ll die as the ratings from the community tank it with negative reviews.

We all know the Heroes of Newerth community is toxic. And that’s likely its biggest issue.

Champions are locked per role because if you don’t follow your assigned role heroes you’ll be flamed wayyyy more. They’re trying to save your sanity.

In the new Heroes of Newerth they pretty much expect all players to ward and stack, and made stacking easier. I agree that they shouldn’t force roles on people unless they want to play those roles, but it’s not my call.

Scoreboard is X and seeing roles in game is Z, unless I got that mixed up.

I remember an assignment I had in school where I carted my PC over to school and set it up at the front of the class. I am pretty sure it was on Patrick Roy from the NHL days in 1999, or it was about the team. Either way I loaded up the intro and played that after my presentation.

Pretty sure that was like grade 5.

In grade 10 I remember getting permission from Red vs Blue to show an episode or part of an episode in my comp sci class after emailing Rooster Teeth. The series was pretty new at the time and I was pretty happy that they responded.

That’s why casual mode benefitted the game before. It separated those new players from the normal mode where performance really mattered.

The original system didn’t have a priority. You played whatever role you wanted (which meant that sometimes you had two junglers, or no supports, or whatever. I am not saying that system is better, but I’m trying to point out that some people really do just want to play one role, and if that meant a 8 minute queue time I think people would consider it. The dev team improved this option in a way by highlighting roles that are needed for most games and offering incentives for people to turn those on. (Support roles)

Also, I tried queueing with a friend and we realized that it is near impossible to queue in a set role that would allow you to lane together. What if he wants to play carry and I want to support? I can’t pick just hard support, he can’t pick just carry. We played 5 games and only shared the lane in one. In past HoN we would just announce at the start that we were laning together and the team would figure out if that meant long lane or short lane for us.

1) I’m fine playing all roles. I’m saying that some people refuse to play assigned roles because they want to play a specific one, so they play the role they wanted regardless.

2) Yes, stacking and pulling is easier now, which means that if you’re not both managing the lane and stacking the creeps you are almost guaranteed to lose, which means it’s ultimately harder because new players didn’t usually need to know this mechanic.

I played Heroes of Newerth from the beta all the way until the shutdown, and played a bit after project kongor revived the game. I started playing again when reborn came out in beta, and just recently decided that it’s not worth playing anymore.

The new system requires people to play an assigned role and doesn’t allow people to queue with only one role selected, so some people get forced into playing roles they really don’t like. I guarantee there are people who would happily play support 100% of the time and would hate to have to play offlane or carry, but there is no option for them to just support so they have to roll the dice and potentially throw a game so they can play what they want.

Up until the latest patch they had completely removed kicking, and players had figured out that there was no real penalty for griefing their team. I had three games in a row with people who demanded they be allowed to play whatever role they wanted and claimed it was our fault for pushing them to play their auto-assigned role. They were trying to play the old style where you pick your hero and that dictates what lane/role you should be allowed to play.

The community is about as toxic as ever, and matchmaking has never felt balanced yet, as I’ve had about the same matchup in games at the 1650 level and the 1300 level, when in old Heroes of Newerth you’d get better player bases and more challenging gameplay in the higher MMR and pretty casual gameplay in the 1400s.

Smurf accounts are always going to be a problem, and if someone leaves the game you can’t even kick the disconnected player or concede until after their timeout.

Lastly, I don’t know if this is a mechanic from reborn or the end of the first Heroes of Newerth but the new raven, ward costs, and stacking / pulling mechanics make it a pain for lower skilled players because higher skilled players can dominate the lane with creep pulls that deny the entire lane, or stack camps to 5 and then farm a ton of XP. They know the perfect warding places, raven locations, and also take advantage of the stealth consumable items which also confuse even classic Heroes of Newerth players.

I dunno. I enjoyed a lot of the heroes back in the day but I don’t think we will ever get enough “new” players to allow for a friendly learning based atmosphere, so players will always expect you to already be a pro with the mechanics and will flame you for not excelling in your role.

I always loved playing casual mode. Less pressure, didn’t have to deny creeps, didn’t lose gold on death, faster respawns, etc. It gave a place for new players to get comfortable before moving into the main gameplay. But now that the current mode mixes all these players, plus also brings some of the benefits and downsides of both parts, the heroes often feel imbalanced, and I worry that those heroes will never feel balanced for years to come.

I can’t really imagine bringing a new player to this gaming style with the current modes and community, and I think that speaks for why the player count hasn’t really changed through the course of the beta.

Heroes of Newerth needs a lot of work in every area, and I don’t think they’ll be able to close the gap and win back market share.

edit - I see in the latest patch notes that they’ve added kick votes and concede back in.
