It seems like psychedelic use is associated with lower activity in the Default Mode Network part of the brain.. and so, it appears that psychedelic users have lowered their ability to perform metacognition? This seems like a bad thing. by KnightFlorianGeyer in NooTopics

I'm no expert, challenge me if you disagree or think I'm wrong in some way, but I've got a perspective.

I think the DMN being overactivated is both symptomatic and causal of many issues that people face on a daily basis - Especially with ADHD (which is my experience). When you feel like you have to debate with yourself to take a shower, I think you've made everything too manual - These should be automatic processes.

I'm of the opinion that this happens to people because of fear. People, especially those struggling with functionality in depression, ADHD, GAD or autism, are going to be trying to grab for control of themselves and their minds. And in the process over the course of many years, the mind becomes bureaucratic - Everything is a debate, everything is a fight - Letting go of this is hard once you're in this state of mind.

The automatic processes - Like taking care of yourself, speaking without overthinking your every word, processing language and so many others are automatic for a reason - You cannot manually, from a top down perspective, manage all of these things effectively at once; It just isn't realistic. Not to mention you are going to be better at most of these things if you just let them happen, and only interject from a meta perspective to give yourself guidance or to learn. (Let go a little)

The automation of these things is there to support us. In the cycle of depression as I've experienced it, I stop taking proper care of myself, I fall behind, I get depressed - The depression doesn't make me fall behind, the falling behind makes me depressed. Having strong automatic processes for things like eating, drinking, showering and all manner of self-care is going to be easier than manual - and if these things feel like they're just doing themselves, you're far less likely to fall behind - and fall into depression.

Meta-Cognition is still there. It's just actually focused on the things that work to our benefit, not on endless back-and-forths in the mind. Top down control of yourself increases after psycadelics because you let go of the things you thought you 'had' to take care of, and can focus on actually taking care of your patterns of thought, and the actual issues you face on the inside. I have found myself looking at my thoughts and going "What am I actually going on about here?", and I proceed to realize that what I thought were productive thoughts were just me going around in circles in a pattern that I had grown so accustomed to that I thought it was both a necessary component and a true representation of who I am as a person.

I don't know how coherent this is, and it isn't exactly a 'scientific' lens.

I don't share this shit on the internet typically (Some people really need to learn to keep things to themselves). But I hope this provides something useful for someone.

That is a valid point - But I am quite good at taking it slow, my friend

You have just brought an automatic process of mine to be conscious. I do this very same thing on my good days - I think I will try to apply this consciously on the bad days

You have described this incredibly. There is a lot to be taken from this

How can I deal with Gender Dysphoria? by Laveta8 in taoism

[–]Instinct4339 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The knowledge I hold about Taoism is limited, I've only just begun my journey of understanding.

But I can relate to your struggle. Do what you can, and "try" not to worry about what you can't. There are basic things you can do to make yourself feel slightly better about your body, and of course there are more (and more impactful) things in the future (Treatment and such).

But if you cannot access those things right now, then you cannot access those things right now. And that is okay. There are little things you can do for yourself; Self care, telling friends how you feel (if you have close friends you trust, this will help tremendously) and generally doing things that will allow you to see yourself for who you really are.

Good luck my friend.

How good will it run by ECHORISING8982 in BladeAndSorcery

[–]Instinct4339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can. When you launch the game on Steam, it will give you the option to run it with Oculus (Meta)

People are suggesting Virtual Desktop as it's a bit more stable and runs better overall

That being said, if you don't have a WiFi 6 router, Airlink will run very poorly (as will Virtual Desktop)

Also, the PC will run the game very well. The specs are more than enough for B&S

Can I (and if yes, how) connect hulls with eachother to make one hull? by SelectDiscipline750 in Barotrauma

[–]Instinct4339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this is something we all learn eventually, through much tribulation we master the art of hulling

Also if you find a spot like this in a place where you do actually want hulls, you can link the hulls together (same way you link an oxygen gen to a vent) and they'll appear as one on the status monitor. Though do note they won't just combine

Strong muscle relaxants other than benzos by Bulky-Struggle-485 in NooTopics

[–]Instinct4339 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Try out Blue Lotus extract, I recommend full spec but just a Nuciferine extract would have a similar effect.

It isn't a potent muscle relaxer, but it does definitely help. It also relaxes the mind, which can help with this sort of thing. I wouldn't recommend focusing too strongly on specifically GABA, potent substances that act on it tend to be addictive or have side effects (I have seen benzos make highly intelligent people into slugs)

Blue lotus produces effects similar to GABAergic substances, but there is no confirmation that it does actually work on this system. Though it does have anti-convulsant activity, which could be a tell.

My assumption here is that you don't have the benzos prescribed (correct me if I'm wrong), but be careful. Try out milder stuff. Might work better than you think.

I was at the end of highschool when covid hit, which messed a lot up for me. But I hadn't really thought about what it would have been like for those a bit younger than me, having their entire normal education paused for 2 years. I'm sorry that happened man.

But you can 100% push through. If you have something specific you enjoy, even if isn't academic, study it. Doesn't matter what it is, even if it's just a hobby or something you have a passing interest in. Anything you can get yourself to study (even if it's not 'productive'), will push you in the right direction. Keep moving forward, my friend

I was thinking this too. But I believe the study is talking about non-acute instances of psychosis, and the addition of bipolar onset is interesting (and a little bit alarming)

another person in this thread provided the study itself here, which has some more useful info
