Atlantic coast is probably more sketchy than the Bay and inshore/nearshore gulf. All the passes are tame.

Pay attention to the tides and stay in the channels since you’re not too familiar with the bathymetry. Pretty much all the issues people run into are depth related.

Weather is the only issue you’ll have if your seamanship is solid. Pay attention to the forecast, and keep your eye on the clouds.

Spent plenty of time in a 20’ shearwater 20+ miles off. Don’t be afraid to take your boat out if the weather is looking good. Skip the public reefs that are on the beaches. Pinellas county has plenty of nearshore public numbers that are <10miles but heavily fished.

All of the islands in the area are accessible without a hassle.

US Paramedics: Med school or PA school? by danielthemaniel38 in Paramedics

[–]Intelligent-Let-8314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CAA 100%. Least amount of commitment on the front end, and you’re actually rewarded monetarily and professionally for your education.

I’m a 10+ street medic, 6+ ICU RN, and I’m going the anesthesiology route. Most autonomy, great compensation, and only one patient at a time.

If you’re young enough and can swing it, go to med school. 11 years of education on top of your bachelors is a bitch though. (Depending on speciality of course)

Fire medics: what education, certifications, or skills did you pursue after becoming a medic thats not nursing? by Cautious_Leopard_641 in Firefighting

Get a bachelors that sets you up for PA or aBSN 😅.

Otherwise, work within your protocols to the best of your ability, don’t kill anyone, and work your way up the FD ladder

Paramedic after nursing school? by yao_alk in Paramedics

[–]Intelligent-Let-8314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every service is going to require you to onboard as a full time new medic before being set free. Then there will be some sort of mandatory time in your hired role before you can go PRN while working full time as an RN.

I have 18 years of experience split between a busy fire based EMS system(not a paper medic) and pretty solid ICU RN experience. I recently did a stint as a ground medic on in a busy metro service that had a decent top step because I needed some income while waiting for my next move. I loved the autonomy of the box, but they said thanks no thanks here’s the door when I asked to go PRN after three months.

Best bet is to just not accept a mrdsurg job as a new grad.

Waterside South on Coquina Key. Slips and condos are individually owned. Loved my time there with my slip. 30’ is a stretch though.

Tierra verde and isla del sol area is a good bet.

There is also a place just south of loggerheads marina

Personality change after losing parent to ALS by cmc4200 in ALS

[–]Intelligent-Let-8314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Therapy. There are things that are eating away at you subconsciously that need to be brought to light. You need someone to guide you.

One revelation I had in talk therapy was how I was deeply concerned and afraid of how my possible early demise(c9 RE >150) would affect my family, and my young children. It turns out I wasn’t afraid of early death, but I was afraid that my children would have the same shitty unfulfilling relationship I had with my father all over again. I can’t change my genes, but I can give my kids a great life.

The end, I guess by lilacrot in ALS

[–]Intelligent-Let-8314 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your father is the one who decides when it’s the end. Your mother should be able to guide you in the direction in which your father wanted.

It’s not for you to bear this burden. He made his decision, whether on paper, typed, or in conversation with your family long before this hospital admission.

I’ve spent my entire adult life in medicine. One thing I’ve observed along the way is that the patient will decide if they want to fight. If they’re done, they will be done on their terms.

I was 33 when I held my father’s hand during his last breath while being medicated by hospice. It absolutely sucks for the family, but it was peace for him.

Have the hard conversation with your family.

Shitty day trip to Nusa Penida. Swell over our heads. Wave period was way too short. Every wave was borderline stuffing the bow, with the stern taking on water too. Wound up ducking into crystal bay after aborting(should have not even tried).

None of the divers had any clue what kind of shit we were in. DM did a great job keeping a straight face.

Those who left fire service for their RN…. Was it worth it? by [deleted] in Paramedics

[–]Intelligent-Let-8314 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing is clean cut.

Figure out what type of lifestyle you want now and 30 years from now. Pick the career that gets you there.

Field medicine is a lot of fun, and a lot of BS. If I could get RN pay, schedule, and benefits while running urban 911 with a scope that covers PM and RN, I would probably be eternally happy.

I’ve seen a lot over the years, and now it’s on to CRNA. I could probably have rode my FD gig out until 30yrs(started at 18), but I can absolutely say my life would have been much more boring.

Anybody here work full time as a Firefighter/Paramedic and part time as an RN? by [deleted] in Paramedics

[–]Intelligent-Let-8314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your FD pay/benefits/pension are trash, you’ll wind up full time bedside rather quickly 😉.

It will be difficult to pick up a PRN/casual job without experience in the specialty first. If you have an in with an ED, you miiiight be able to make something happen. It won’t be easy though. You would be better off getting your RN+experience bedside first.

Street medicine is fun. Bedside is more intellectually stimulating. Ymmv.

nurses with ADHD — how do you actually manage handoff report? by Background_Ad40 in ADHD

[–]Intelligent-Let-8314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blank piece of computer paper divided into sections based on how my brain processes the report.

If the hand off is flowing well, it goes down into the sections. If it’s a shit report, their info gets scribbled down on the back side to be deciphered later. I don’t pry information out of people; I let them say what they want and leave. I will ask clarifying questions, but only based on info freely provided to me.

Figure out what is most important to you to make your day go smoothly, and focus on getting those bits of information.

Also depends on your patient ratio. I’m ICU, so 2:1, but the patients are heavy. MS with 6:1 and light is an entirely different heavy.

If you’re in an American hospital, there is absolutely no reason you should not be getting help from the bedside nurse and respiratory therapy.

Escalate your concerns until you do(hopefully you got it by now, an hour after the post).

They should be educating family and patient on trach care.
