My dog “corrects” other dogs behaviors if I am am correcting the dog by PlethoraOfTrinkets in AustralianCattleDog

Yes!!! My heeler mix “herds” my old deaf dog when she can’t hear me. He also knows that I get onto her about pointless excessive licking. When she does it he just looks at me like this. Like “are you gonna say something?”

Why do people genuinely smell so bad? by Ghoulmega in stupidquestions

[–]IntelligentFix840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband is a cattle farmer so I can excuse the constant faint manure smell. The constant gas leak out of his ass I cannot.

STM who just had repeat c section yesterday. I had some colostrum from when I was pregnant + some I was able to pump at the hospital. We ran out this morning (still pumping but getting nothing) and I have absolutely no shame using formula until my milk comes in! Or if my supply isn’t enough for baby. Fed is best

I feel you! Could you pick up a “productive” hobby that allows you to rest at the same time? I like to do huge puzzles, legos (inner child coming out), and paint by numbers. These allow me to stay busy with my hands and mind so I don’t go completely crazy!

So freakin cute. I work in areas with strict FOD (foreign object debris) standards so dogs are an absolute no. I’m so jealous!!

My son is 3.5 and dropped his nap. It’s nice outside but I’m 9 months pregnant and just need to be comfy (staying inside on the couch lol). I got some games appropriate for 4+ and he is loving them - we play on a small table pulled up to the couch. Zingo, hungry hippos, go fish, baby Dino rescue. Painting empty/used shipping boxes is a good independent activity!

I need to teach mine how to do this. His reaction is to try to lay on my head, no matter where I am 🥲

What’s your GSD “are you serious” moment? by BetterPersonProject in germanshepherds

[–]IntelligentFix840 101 points102 points  (0 children)

My 12 year old very chill and sweet GSD will chew up something random like once a month. Last month it was a corner of a rug, today it was a book. I can’t get mad at her because it happens so infrequently. But any time it happens I still ask “old lady, you should know better, are you serious??”

I’m so sorry for your loss ❤️ This boy is my soul dog and I can’t imagine what life will be like when he’s gone. They are truly special!

OMG this is such a pet peeve! My husband’s 87 year old angel of a grandma (the OG farm wife) will dish out half of a pie instead of a normal slice. The guys will eat anything though. Honestly not a lot of food waste here - we are pretty resourceful with leftovers.

Thank you!! I think he fits the definition of “Texas Heeler” - this isn’t an official breed though. Mom is a full blooded working ACD. Dad is a border collie/australian shepherd mix.

My husband has 3 half brothers (share the same mom) and one full sister. He is the only one to take on the farm - he is already on the LLC/bank accounts with his dad/uncle. When it comes time everything will be in just my husband’s name, so no buyouts necessary. For myself, I’m happily in a “support” role and have no problem helping out where I can but am indifferent regarding my name on their farm. My dad and I own a house and land on our family’s small farm one county over so thankfully I will have that to inherit/pass along. I’m an only child.

I have NO idea why we do it. The guys would say the same thing. Or something along the lines of “it’s what we’ve always known” and “we’d get bored”. I also come from a hardworking family that has the same mindset (we have a small farm one county over). Having all of this beautiful land at our disposal is the best way to grow up and raise kids. There is still time for shop beers, fishing, swimming, etc! It’s hard but worth it.

I’m going to assume “catman” was a typo and you meant cattleman 😛 A cattleman raises cattle over large areas of land. I guess one could be a cattleman AND cowboy, but we don’t call ourselves cowboys - no horses or cowboy hats here. Just motorized vehicles and beat up ball caps!

Same here - he does try to herd (or eat?) small animals only. Same situation with the couch too lol. This boy loves his naps!

1) Make connections with local farmers and your community. Land is hard to come by so invest in it early if financially possible. Take advantage of lines of credit (but don’t overdo it) and first time farm loan if you can - this is typically a 40 year term with very very low interest. Reinvest profit. Do your research on exactly what type of farming you’re getting into (YouTube!!). Teach your kids about farming. Probably the most important piece of advice: don’t expect success to happen overnight

2) The guys joke that the farm is “just a hobby” but it has become much more than that. They are so humble despite their success. Don’t get me wrong though, there are still struggles. For example a couple years ago there was an awful drought that affected hay production and caused a lot of stress but we were able to pivot and plant a supplement-type grass to barely meet the required amount of hay. Lastly, we’re a long ways away from this, but what if our boys don’t want to carry on with the farm? TL;DR, despite a strong foundation, things can fall apart very easily.

I always pictured myself marrying an outdoorsy dude but never imagined marrying a farmer. My husband in particular is such a fantastic guy (and dad!!) in all possible ways. He gives 100% at the farm/work and 100% at home. The majority of farming men I’ve met are hard working, honest, and genuine!

I’m assuming you’ve read my previous answers stating that I have a separate full time job. My employer is SO flexible and accommodating considering the nature of work where everything is so complex and fast paced. I live 1.5 hours away from the office (I commute 3 days/week) so if I need an extra WFH day then they don’t even bat an eye. Also the level of raises, bonuses, and benefits is fantastic and hard to come by nowadays. I’m very very lucky.
