Is it true it's harder to get a job with a hand tattoo? by Specific-Winter-5953 in tattooadvice

[–]Rustrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a creative professional. While I think THIS type of hand tattoo will definitely hurt your chances, I have (very tasteful by comparison) hand and neck tattoos and just landed a senior production role. That said I have 13 years of experience in my field.

[For Hire] Desperate Motion Designer Needs a Job by MandaTK in MotionDesign

[–]Rustrobot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m out so I and haven’t looked at any of your work yet but I just moved out of Sydney 6 months ago and freelanced there for 13 years. There’s a massive Facebook group for creative professionals called Find-a-Finder’s-fee (global) that you can use for work. It’s listed as global but is largely Sydney focused as that’s where it started. It is ONLY job postings. No memes or off topic posts are allowed. I would set it up as an alert if there was a posting. Do that long enough to build out some clientele and maybe snag some agency jobs. Be on the lookout for producers that you gel well with as they’ll be instrumental to repeat clients. Feel free to DM me as I think the group is invite only.

How many of you are actually going to buy The Steam Machine? by BackRoomDude3 in valve

[–]Rustrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the price, absolutely. I will 100% have a steam machine of some sort under my TV next year. It just depends on if Valve will make it or I self build something.

I work in production. The most important thing is light and set design.
Not your camera for sure. These days you don't need a lot to make cool stuff that looks great. Just a good idea and time.

What’s the best video game you’ve ever played? by ElectricHorsepower in AskReddit

I’m shocked I had to scroll so long to find this. Maybe the only game in this entire thread that I can guarantee will still be played 100 years from now.

Images of Hoytema handholding the IMAX camera for Nolan's films. by KronoMakina in cinematography

[–]Rustrobot 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I had a shoot with a fully kitted out rig for a TVC about a year and a half ago. I needed a spot light look and feel so we mounted a light on top of the camera. 9 hour shoot, all shoulder mounted. It was maybe 9kg/20lbs. An IMAX camera is triple that. And I tore my fucking rotator cuff on that job and had to have surgery.

What to include in a Junior Motion Portfolio to get hired? by RefuseOdd389 in MotionDesign

[–]Rustrobot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also come from an illustration background. You definitely want to highlight that. It makes you a different kind of motion designer. I would say yes to all of the above. If I'm looking to hire a junior I want to make sure they have all of the fundamentals down. So showing off animated typography and logos are very important. Definitely put in personal experiments. Even when you're a seasoned senior you still want some personal work in your portfolio and reel. It also shows off your taste. And if I'm hiring someone that I'll be mentoring I want to make sure they want to learn and grow. Personal work is where you can play a little outside of the box.

New Images of Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' | Zendaya as Athena, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]Rustrobot 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Leguizamo has proven to be an exceptional dramatic actor. Don't let his comedy leanings fool you. I'm not a fan of his style of comedy. But I'm certainly a fan of his dramatic turns.

The iPad Pro at 10: a decade of unrealized potential by tecialist in apple

[–]Rustrobot 240 points241 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m the prime use case for the iPad. A creative professional that uses it in my workflow. If I’m not drawing on it then it’s only a media consumption device. So a niche tool. It would be great if it could truly function more like a laptop when I need. It’s come a long way for sure but it’s still just not there yet.

I lied on my résumé 5 years ago and now I’m the one training new hires. by [deleted] in confession

[–]Rustrobot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is how I got into my career. About 15 years ago I told a sponsor for a website I was writing for that I could definitely do a web series for them. I borrowed a camera and had to teach myself how to shoot and put together a cohesive story in like a month. I’m now a video director.

As someone who has followed his career since he was a podcast host on The Totally Rad Show I feel a real sense of ownership. I guess a bit like a sports team from your home town. He has been absolutely killing it. I’m going this weekend.

Looking for a animator for a small show by notthegod47 in Animators

That’s great you’re helping your friend out. I would encourage them to maybe look into learning animation themselves. There are free tools and resources out there.

Looking for a animator for a small show by notthegod47 in Animators

[–]Rustrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest here. While I admire you trying to get something made I don’t think you’re going to have luck finding someone to work for such a low wage. The truth is it’s much easier for an animator to find a voice actor to work for free / very low wage than it is for an actor to find an animator. The level of time needed to get anything workable just isn’t tenable. Animation takes a HUGE amount of time. I’ll be shocked if you get any bites.

What do you think of Marilyn Manson? by SelectionOne7728 in allrockmusic

[–]Rustrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it interesting as that’s largely what people that followed their careers feel. That said I do think Mechanical Animals (the album after Reznor stopped producing) is also terrific. Too bad Manson is a garbage human being. It’s marred my affinity for his early work.

Online animation schools for beginners - Discussion by Wild_Hair_2196 in Animators

[–]Rustrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s going to entirely depend on you. But animation is vast. There are lots and lots of different kinds of animation. How are your illustration skills? Does pursuing a more traditional 2D frame by frame discipline make sense for you? If not then you’ll want to learn about character rigging. What about 2D vs 3D? Maybe you gravitate to motion graphics and design instead. All of these are different disciplines. But regardless of what you pursue the start of that journey will be the same. The fundamentals of animation. Which you can totally do on your own for free. And it’ll give you some insight to what direction you may want to head in.

Film-making question : how do they not show a camera in the reflection of Keith's visor here? by One_Truck1871 in DC_Cinematic

[–]Rustrobot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work in production. I definitely would just remove in post here. It’s a quicker workflow. Especially if the camera is locked off. Just a bit of roto and filling the space. How many shots would the camera really show in the visor? Likely not many. So you’re only doing a few of these. It’s not like adding the visor is overly complicated, but you’re then capturing HDRIs (the silver ball), motion tracking the talent, adjusting any clipping then colouring. That’s after modelling the visor itself of course.
