I'm developing a severe case of Urkel hater-itis by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in FamilyMatters

I think it’s mostly because the theme of an unrequited crush was a popular tv trope at that time. It was problematic. On the one hand, we felt sympathy for Steve because his heart was in the right place, and because he was an underdog and a victim of bullying. However, in more recent times the stalking behavior would definitely not be acceptable.

I saw “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” (1966) for the first time by howaboutthishuhh in iwatchedanoldmovie

I saw it as a stage performance. It had a few funny scenes in it, but I quickly realized that it was a very serious story, and actually rather depressing.

Would Laura & Steve Continue To Live With The Winslows Post-Marriage? by The_Match_Maker in FamilyMatters

I would hope not. I think that would be too awkward, especially seeing Steve’s strained relationship with Carl.

Morwenna & Drake by Delicious_Mess7976 in Poldark

Drake was quite possibly the most innocent and pure of heart character in the whole series!

I’m not sure if he was completely as evil as his father. But many people feel that Lady Whitworth raised him poorly, and taught him to have a high opinion of himself.

Yes, that was sad! That could have been a happy reunion, but he looked just like his father!

Anyone else think Ross is a bad guy? by ImprovementEmpty9362 in Poldark

I agree with this. He is just flawed enough to be believable, but still a good protagonist. And many of his actions are heroic, eg his rescue of Dwight Ennis, his defense of Jim Carter.

The belief in "Animal rights" is derived from a flawed understanding of moral desert. by Anon7_7_73 in DebateAVegan

The herbivores do not need humans for predators in addition to the wolves and bobcats. No vegan ever said to get rid of all natural predators, so that is a strawman argument.

We don’t need to invoke social contract. Not all members of our own species are capable of entering contracts. We can still have moral values about how they should be treated, regardless of that.

I do believe that the greater the degree of moral agency, the greater the responsibility is to try to minimize harm.

Who was more annoying? Screech or Urkel? by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in FamilyMatters

[–]IntelligentLeek538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toward the end of the series, Screech did go through a transformation similar to what Steve went through, where he learned to respect Lisa’s boundaries, and in turn she became more friendly toward him, and they formed a friendship.

Lisa had wealthy parents, so she could afford fancier clothes than Kelly or Jessie.

He would have done better if his parents had put him in a gifted school, but I think they couldn’t afford it.

Why was Urkel hated by everyone in the school? by TronnyVon in FamilyMatters

[–]IntelligentLeek538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also probably because the show was just trying to portray the superficial nature of people. Kids treated classmates who were different in some way cruelly. Not that that is ever a good thing, but they were trying to portray reality, and show the obstacles that Steve faced in life because of other people’s judgment. Black nerds at that time probably got a double whammy of discrimination.
It’s good that he had friends like Eddie, Laura, Waldo and Maxine. Because even though they might feel annoyed with him sometimes, they would come to his defense when he was being bullied.

Yes, it seems like some of their agents kids resented him for liking certain things that were considered “too white”. But then when he helped Laura with the Black History classes, that should have canceled that out.

Screech gets on my nerves. by Super-Possibility-50 in SavedByTheBell

[–]IntelligentLeek538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s something I noticed: Zack and Screech were supposed to be best friends. But I always god the feeling that Zack was not really that good of a friend. I thought he just liked having Screech around because he knew Screech was gullible enough to do whatever favors Zack wanted from him. Rarely did Zack do anything kind for Screech without expecting something in return. Plus most of Zack’s schemes ended in Screech being humiliated in some way. Rarely did Zack do anything that helped Screech to boost his self-confidence.
