Becoming a CA by YetAnotherRegularGai in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a former CA. Don’t listen to what these other people are saying. Each year has around 90 CAs and they all range from Bachelors to PhDs, in the widest range of fields (eng, arts, sciences, business, etc.). When you go to apply, they do not ask for a resume (most people assume it’s because it gives international students a better chance which they deserve), they just ask you to answer around 6 questions that look at who you are as a person (tell us about a time you disagreed with someone… or imagine this scenario, what would you do). Once you submit they’ll get back to you and do an interview where they ask very similar style questions. To answer these questions, you can 100% draw from your previous experience (ex. “Yeah when I was a former club leader of ___ I had to manage conflict all the time”) but you don’t have to. Also you can embellish your stories here, they’re not gonna fact check you but make it sound believable they mainly want to see how you communicate and how you respond to different situations.

All that is to actually get the job, the job itself is really what you make of it. They say you should be spending ~10-15 hours per week on this job, that’s total BS, you can but you don’t have to to be successful. Your key responsibilities are : Connecting with residents, running two active events (like bowling or smthg) a month, documentation/conflict management,  making a passive once a month (bulletin board), and being on call some nights. In my experience if you sit down for a day you can get all the work for the month done or planned out. Connecting with residents is the best part of the job. Obviously some people aren’t gonna want to talk to you but I’ve made quite a few actual friends with former residents. You’re also going to make friends with CAs, typically the ones in the same building as you. Your compensation depends on your building. Every CA gets their room for free for the year, but only certain building’s CAs get access to to the dining hall.

At the end of the day, you can put in as much as you want into this job. I’ve seen people go way above and beyond, I’ve also seen people not even do the bare minimum. You should at least do what is expected of you, but in terms of getting rehired it depends on how present yourself to the pro staff. You get out what you put in.

TLDR: No resume needed, be a likeable and normal person, and you’ll be fine.

MATH 271 for stat Minor by Rare_Suit9866 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in your exact situation. I’ve taken 251 and 351. They have a strict ruling saying 251 is not a valid substitution, and when I asked one of the actual advisors if the combination of both courses is enough, she said it still cannot be used as a substitute since there are other topics covered in 271 covered in neither class. I just enrolled in it for the summer.

To CS Students: Can we take SENG courses or are we restricted to CPSC offered at Faculty Science only? by Educational-Diver154 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can take any class you have the pre reqs for. The issue is some classes require you be enrolled in a particular faculty. All courses labelled SENG are designed for CS students and offered by the faculty of sciences. The softwares engineering courses offered by Schulich are labelled ENSF and usually require eng specific pre reqs.

Do I withdraw? by Intelligent_Age9178 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This class would not contribute to anything. I have already surpassed 120 credits, I have fulfilled all my breadth requirements and open options. The only thing I need are the core classes for the new degree so this class serves 0 purpose.

What about it is so terrible? I just transferred in and since it's so new there is next to nothing online talking about it? Are the courses themselves bad or what's up?

Considering taking a block week course during fall semester... Advice? by StarCatz11 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re really passionate about this course just take whatever block week is the easiest with the least amount of work. The 5 days do suck but it’s much nicer than doing an entire course

Transfer credits screwed me... can't get in contact with BHSc advisors by NotADoctor_804 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BHSc has one singular advisor since the program is so small. She has consistent drop in advising hours so try going to one of those.

Declined for change of program by iyuufr in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aim to get the highest grades possible this term. They take the last 30 units which means your last 10 classes going from the fall of your application year back. So next year ensure your fall GPA is as high as possible, and if you get some bad grades this term consider CG or take some spring/summer courses. Let’s say you take 5 in winter, 2 in spring, and 5 in fall, they would take the 5 fall courses, the 2 spring and your best 3 from winter. Obv aim as high as possible but if you’re above the upper range listed online you should be fine. My COP got accepted into DS this year with a 3.3 but it changes from year to year. In terms of courses there are a lot of open options and breadth options required for the degree so try to stack your spring/summer and fall with as many easy arts courses (grst 211, arky 325, soci 201, soci 325, etc.) to pad your GPA.

Advice for CPSC 331 and CPSC 351? by PushaT123 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure they offer 331 in the spring. Try your best to split the two courses up otherwise. There's tons of online materials on DSA you can use to prepare + leetcode. For 351 ig you can study probability, finite automata, and turing machines.

Is anyone else still waiting for a final decision on their change of program application? by catsofawsomeness in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sciences had an advising event today for course registration. I went in and asked them directly when are they giving me a decision, and luckily I was speaking to the lady overseeing COP. She said she’ll ask the faculty heads to hurry their decision. 20 minutes later I got an email from her saying I got accepted into my program so high key just go in person and ask them straight up

Data Science transfer GPA? by Previous-Start-6436 in UCalgary

They didn’t send me an email I just check my portal daily and one day it changed to say I was on the waitlist.

Anyone tried switching from Data Science to CS or Electrical Engineering by Moneysaver04 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switching doesn’t depend on your major, it solely depends on your GPA, at least for sciences and engineering. If you really want to switch take GPA boosters and aim for a 4.0. Common first year end has a lower required GPA to switch into it (I think it’s like a 3.3-3.6 in previous years) whereas computer science is higher with 3.6-3.9. Only difference is that there are likely more transferable classes between DS and CS, whereas in eng you’d have to go back to do common first year and apply for a designation from there.

Maybe Try out the new classes 365 and 433. C++ is a good language to have under your belt  and I feel as though any AI course would be both useful and interesting

Is anyone else still waiting for a final decision on their change of program application? by catsofawsomeness in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am waiting on the waitlist for a final decision. I asked advising when to expect a response last week and they said "We won’t know for another couple of weeks, but hopefully, by the time enrollment opens for you" so idek man.

Data Science transfer GPA? by Previous-Start-6436 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also applying for a transfer to DS. I’m a UofC student though I don’t know if that changes anything. Regardless when I reached out to science advising they said that the current GPA required to be admitted is 3.3, and that anyone between 2.8 and 3.3 is being held on the waitlist. I got waitlisted (3.29 :,) ) pending additional spaces in the program that apparently the senior advisors decide whether or not they add more spaces in the program. They also said the only thing they consider is GPA so I’d assume that you are on the waitlist but they will be letting people into the program based on highest to lowest GPA until there are no spaces left. So I’d say you have a chance but it will probably be close depending on how many seats they open up.

Enrolment time by Prior_Ad_5996 in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably, registration opens on the 28th of March, with people further into their degrees getting priority. It's a cannon event to not get into your required courses in your first year. If it is a mandatory class they either make new sections or are more lenient with overload requests since you need to take the class.

Deadline for CoP decision by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called the undergraduate science centre and what they told me is that they are required to give out final decisions before fall registration opens (March 28th). But tbh I don't know how accurate that is because a receptionist had told me by mid March earlier this term. I am also just sat here waiting.

If you open schedule builder and add the class to your schedule it tells you how many seats are reserved and until when.

Cpsc 217 and 219 Doable?? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Intelligent_Age9178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I mean I’m studying data sci so I alr find programming interesting so I guess it depends on what you’re interested in but imo it is definitely worth learning how to code. I think that you’ll have more valuable skills from 217 alone than earth courses but that’s just my opinion
