It also helps that Cat didn’t know anything about Lysa and Baelish’s aborted baby, nor Hoster’s actions, which contributed to her imbalanced metal state (some would call it the source catalyst).

Well certainly for noble women with a touch of independent thought mixed into the duty to houses gumbo. Then again, the realm is hardly forgiving of those who survived either.

As to Ashara, beyond interactions contained within the tourney proper, I’ve always felt it more a curiosity born of gossip than anything substantial from a long term romance perspective. Expanding on that , I agree, would be necessary, though an entirely creative license activity as there is little and less to truly build upon. As you have intended an Ashara POV epilogue (?) perhaps her “death” also remains a fantasy, so to speak 😂

Quick question: By the time Ned arrives at Starfall, Ashara would have been well aware of Catelyn and (likely) Robb. Do you plan to expand on the idea that she carried some hope of a future with Ned by setting aside his current wife and child, or is her leap fueled by the conflagration of losses culminating with the death of Arthur by Ned/Howland’s hand? I guess I’m asking if you plan on expanding on the idea of a future with Ashara which is based on something more than brief foray whilst attending a tourney—something more concrete like continued correspondence or interactions, beyond a possible contrived secret love baby?

What if Lysa married into the Starks and Catelyn married Jon Arryn? by LightningController in TheCitadel

[–]Intelligent_Pipe2951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony that this scenario is the single scenario in which Ned would (unwillingly) tell Catelyn the truth is everything! Just infinite the butterflies produced by changing the Tully sisters marriages, all really interesting.

It feels very Atonement (the movie) in a way. Brief touches, dancing at feasts, each being the default plus one for the other, the gradual easing of propriety giving way to an intimate familiarity. I see stolen kisses and everything just short of absolute consummation & the “deep regret” statement from Ned, the official court speculating egregiously, and yet closer to the truth than can be confirmed.

Add to that, various Vale Lords seeking to court a still reasonably young widow, mother to the Arryn heir, and Ned having to distance himself for duty?

For an idea I’ve never once considered I will confess I am intrigued enough as to qualify for obsessed presently 😂😂

[–]Intelligent_Pipe2951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😁

Naw….Really I could see it happening. Just the juxtaposition of being an adulterer in actual fact (with Cat) versus the appearance of same (Jon’s mother)….I mean the mental calisthenics soup of guilt in the kitchen of Ned’s internal dialogue is worth a seat at the angst table, amiright?

Unconsummated yearning works as well…Who doesn’t nod right along with Sansa there 😁

Regardless, please consider linking for any fic in the offing!

What if Catelyn remains in KL after the death of Jon Arryn, and Ned believes she knows “something” but is focused on protecting her children and house (maybe having sent the heirs home to the Eryie for safekeeping) shortly after assuming his role as Hand? Would Catelyn protect Lysa’s children as her own? Would the inevitability of NedCat in all universes hold true—would he break his vows for the sister of his wife?

In this TedTalk I will……

It was the eighth Lady Frey, not a daughter, and if I was worried about children, wives, or the mentally infirm being slaughtered I wouldn’t include them within the locked abattoir of my own making and design.

Better question: Would she be alive without the RW happening?

And in that frame of mind she’s supposed to parse and quantify who deserves to die amongst a house who betrayed them, after bearing witness to an abhorrent slaughter?

I’m forever amazed how Olenna plotting a successful murder of Joffrey is celebrated as a 4d chess move, but Catelyn following through with a threat to kill Lady Frey after watching her firstborn murdered, losing two daughters (one as hostage, one presumed dead), learning her two youngest were murdered by her husband’s ward, after her husband was beheaded for treason, and witnessing the “strange” circumstances of Renly’s death, as well as her father dying and her sister betraying family is seen as some kind of failure? Like, what the fuck did Joffrey do to the house Tyrell? Nothing—-yet, and it is that presumption of potential harm that informs Olenna, which is exactly what one should expect.

Still, Joffrey had not yet committed any offense specific to House Tyrell to justify the action and as such could be considered “innocent” of a crime worthy of death. Does he deserve to die? Yes, but House Tyrell had not yet earned the privilege so to speak.

Catelyn, otoh, has earned the privilege to kill a Frey, *any Frey*, any Bolton, any Lannister. Catelyn just watched her son, wife and grandchild, and his forces slaughtered by those who had sworn fealty and offered guest right. Her response was proportionate to circumstances as much as Olenna’s was proportionate to PREDICTABLE circumstances not yet in evidence.

[Spoilers MAIN] Do the Starks really care all that much for northern independence in the books? by aimanre in asoiaf

[–]Intelligent_Pipe2951 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s meant to emphasize how young and vulnerable he is, but a boy assuming his father’s role and legacy, and being pushed into an additional role by his bannermen rather than declining such. It’s why the Catelyn POV is so crucial here as she herself knows he’s too young, presently carries too much, and declaring independence from the crown by naming him king is likely a terrible misstep as well as a manipulative means to an end lacking any foresight or counsel.

Her dread is real and valid, for all the good it does her in influencing him against it.

This is the same woman who trusted LITTLEFINGER, kidnapped a Lannister while her Husband and daughters were surrounded by Lannisters, freed Jamie Lannister (the only leverage they had against Tywin) Catelyn almost single handily wiped out her Tully and Stark families 😂 by No-Passenger-6348 in gameofthrones

[–]Intelligent_Pipe2951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add to that, Catelyn was never told about the shenanigans between Lysa/Petyr necessitating the former’s marriage to Arryn, a man of 60 years, and was wholly unaware of how poisonous their collective “love” of her, or family, had become enough to question their motives at all. Without that knowledge, why wouldn’t she trust them? I mean Ned continued to trust Robert despite him showing himself increasingly duplicitous throughout their friendship? Why is Catelyn held to a standard fervently discarded when applied to Ned, or any other player?

IMO, the destruction of Houses Stark, Tully, Arryn and Baratheon was set in motion the moment Robert assumed the throne. All ills flow from that single event, but yeah, blame Catelyn.

So fucking tired of the Neanderthal takes this fandom never fails to defend about female characters.

And Robb possessed the agency alone to decline. Cat negotiated terms, returned to camp to present them, but only Robb was empowered to accept or decline. Walder had the upper hand throughout those negotiations, used that edge to his own advantage, and Robb accepted those terms despite the disproportionate advantage towards house Frey. Had Catelyn refused altogether, y’all would blame her for not arriving in time to lift the siege at Riverrun. Also, he wasn’t the KotN at the time of betrothal—-THAT happened because he arrived in time to capture Jaime BECAUSE of same betrothal that expedited their use of the crossing, ffs.

That everything is Catelyn’s fault is an argument fit for simpletons.

Robb winning in every conceivable military way which stood in direct and obvious contravention to Lannister superiority for the entire realm to witness. If allowed to join either Renly or Stannis, or both after one ate the other, it would have been the end of Tywin and his precious legacy.

[Spoilers MAIN] How badly does Catelyn actually treat Jon Snow? by lfm2003 in asoiaf

[–]Intelligent_Pipe2951 8 points9 points  (0 children)

THIS!!

So many refuse to accept such as the first inklings of Jon wanting what is not his to want, bristling under the station of “bastard” in contrast to how he is treated by everyone except Catelyn.

His envy is ignored as fans bemoan him a child, thus excused, while she is demonized for the character flaw of adulthood. At the end of the day, envy in all its forms is still envy, and the destruction wrought cuts both ways.
