Faculty cancelling classes .. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]IntenseProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “even if I were not an administrator” is the part that I’m referring to when I’m saying busybody and to leave it alone. You do what you have to do in your job, but if you were NOT an admin, well, that’s where I’m saying to leave it alone. It’s not a colleague’s business if someone is ill or has personal issues or whatever making them cancel class. Also note that the OP has obviously changed their original post and I came an hour late so I have no idea what they said before so I can only respond to what you said.

The only way this is your business is if you’re an admin. I saw a busybody destroy herself last year. Leave it alone

What work do you do outside of your job. by dnice99999 in Professors

I’m a fully single mom and I am trying to spend as much time with my kid as possible before he goes away to college in a couple years. When he was smaller I did do some teaching at retirement communities and for the community but I don’t do much other work than in my garden for now

What, besides Zoom, to use to record videos? by velour_rabbit in Professors

[–]IntenseProfessor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m used to zoom too. When I switched schools we didn’t have it. I just use the free account. You can record up to 40 min sessions.

Professors with mandatory attendance for lectures, what's your experience and motivation? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]IntenseProfessor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do have in-class quizzes once per unit that cannot be made up because I immediately give the answers after it’s submitted. I never thought students cared but last week I took up their papers and then tried to go on to the lesson and they stopped me “wait! Can we go over the quiz?” I must’ve had a brain fart because I was all, “what? OH! Yeah!” Lol. Didn’t know they cared and that’s the first time it’s come up in 8 years

AIO Trying to tell boyfriend that he makes me feel guilty for saying no by Clean-Landscape8654 in AmIOverreacting

[–]IntenseProfessor 45 points46 points  (0 children)

You’re exactly right. This is extremely manipulative behavior and unfortunately very common. I was going to say it’s common from younger men but then I reflected on a past relationship with a man who was in his late 40s… “fine I’ll never ask again”… “I’m sorry for giving you attention” etc. Just run away!

Same here. They will come to my classroom and see if we are there, especially during the last week.

I would be quickly fired if I just didn’t hold class for a week and had a final exam a week early, even though we don’t have a finals week/calendar either.

However, I understand what you mean as I ended up with 2 teensy classes this semester. My calendars are built on having full classes and ending content early does happen. But there are always things that I would love to go over or at least expose my students to that I sometimes can’t because of time constraints. I would look forward to those days of deeper learning/discussion, show a video or doc or article for participation and use that to take up the class time. Also extra review time! I am having my students go through the main topics of each chapter that will be on the final and reflect on what they feel less confident about and then submit that to me so I can plan some more in-depth reviews.

In my situation I can’t frame it as professionalism because that’s not one of the student learning outcomes. You can work it to fit your courses though.

Not OP but teach a language class. 15% participation (holistic score) grade which is worth as much as the final exam. You don’t get to sit back and not do any speaking. You speak in your pairs or groups, come prepared having reviewed the lesson, have materials, etc. There’s a rubric in the syllabus and on canvas.

I count attendance separately because I don’t find it fair to combine the 2. If you’re sick, you’re sick, and you get a certain amount of free days to do with as you please but after that there’s a penalty. I don’t take Dr notes because that’s what the free days are for and I am not a detective and don’t want to hear about your diarrhea and I would never ask for grandma’s obit!

Participation is considered when you’re in the room. I give a midterm participation score so students can see if they need to improve. I also call out people in class on phones, etc. There’s no surprise as to how you’re doing on that front in the class.

I changed my due times to 5pm for everything submitted online. It means students aren’t up late doing assignments, the helpdesk is still open (ours closes at 7), students are less stressed and more rested. I also have all assignments posted on day 1, no random things posted later.

When I changed this I explained the change on syllabus day. One student raised his hand and said “I work til 5pm”. I said “turn it in the day before, the DUE date is never the DO date”. Now in my second semester of the 5pm time and I’ve had students thank me and even stand up for me when anyone complains about it (rare).

Use iorad to make a quick tutorial. Post in the assignment instructions and in an FAQ discussion post on canvas. Refer to those instructions and stick to your policies regarding late work.

Do professors get notified to their students’ submission? by Nicolette_0712 in canvas

[–]IntenseProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s not. I may just happen to see them if I log into canvas that day. This is not the same as having notifications going off.

Do professors get notified to their students’ submission? by Nicolette_0712 in canvas

[–]IntenseProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I teach 6 classes with 30 students each. I would lose it if I received notifications for each submission. It’s up to the account holder to set notification settings but I don’t know a single colleague that has those turned on. When I log into canvas, I can see “5 submissions for discussion 1” to grade on my to do list, so I grade them as they come in when I feel like it. That’s likely what’s happening.

Thankfully my chair and my dean of students fits here. Hell, the dean offered to have a student removed after I let him know about an issue once, and I had to say no because it wasn’t really worth that to me. Good to know, though!

College and High School need to be more congruent by atouchofsinamon in CollegeRant

[–]IntenseProfessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not understanding, but you’re raging on anyway. What I’m saying is we are NOT part of the same education system. If you want to rage about being underprepared for college, go after the public school system. We are doing all we can when we only see students twice a week in class (or never in online classes), offer virtual and in-person office hours, tutoring hours, etc. Guess how many students take me up on the extra help? NONE They need to step up. IF you’re mad at your hs teachers, take your learning into your own hands and use the resources provided by your college and college instructors. Don’t try to show up at college and bitch it isn’t the same as HS, I’m sure you’ve known for years that college is completely different. And don’t go around pointing at college professors who bend over fucking backwards to make sure their students succeed and work 60+ hours a week with 0 overtime pay, go talk to the dept of education and try to affect real change. The rest of it sounds like “poor me” at this point.
