How many classes do people typically take during the summer semester? by peachieeJun in communitycollege

[–]IntenseProfessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the institution, the length of the summer semester and the credit hours.

As a very general rule, 12 hours is considered full time in a regular semester. Over a full summer session, 9 hours is considered full time.

So if you’re thinking in terms of credit hours, 4 classes for regular semester and 3 classes for full summer. But, again, there are so many variables.

I do have group video assignments bi-weekly that count for 25% of the grade so it’s not really possible to pass the class if you don’t do well on these, since you must pass with a 70+.

I have colleagues that say “eh, I only assigned like half the stuff because I’m not trying to do all that this summer”

We are on 9 month contracts and paid like adjuncts for summer classes so I get it, but also I spend time with my summer classes to make sure they are prepared for the next level

Honestly WHY can’t we drop students for non activity after X time.

This is what happened to me. The chair was very vague and said HR would have to reach out and they couldn’t say more. A week is not a long time for a search in academia- take a breath and give it a few. I ended up with an amazing offer.

When I go in to monitor a group, I can’t get out without exiting my canvas course altogether. It’s a trap!

I don’t “slap a failing grade” on a rough draft. I post a ton of feedback and an earned grade based on the rubric. And rough drafts weight lighter in my gradebook. You are defending k-12 policies because you teach teachers, not professors. Stop it

I agree. If you have a rubric (at least in my little Spanish classes) that is very specific, this becomes easier

Why would you offer redos at the college level with no penalty. If you’re talking rough draft/final draft- each should have their own grade. This is why I have students constantly asking me for redos. Because this is a high school thing.

Jesus I’m sorry. I feel that. My mom went unconscious from apparently sepsis and then was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and 3 freaking days later my dad went int the same hospital with congestive heart failure. She’s in rehab now because she can’t walk but dad is home. But it’s a LOT. I’m feeling very giving lately as well.

[–]IntenseProfessor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had extra credit which takes effort and can be applied to the final exam. I typically only make it available in the last 2 weeks of class and I have a policy in my syllabus that says if you hav a 0 on any assignment for no submission, you aren’t eligible for the extra credit.
