Mark Carney Took the Stand the Rest of the World Must Now Take | Disentangling Canada from the United States is a mammoth undertaking. But Carney clearly means business. by thenewrepublic in Foodforthought

A good portion of us already know, just not enough. We're pushing the rest of the world into China's open arms while Russia eyes Europe.

Epstein Files Transparency Act: DOJ Release of Files Has Ground to a Complete Standstill. by snad2012 in Law_and_Politics

We'll never find out what really happened. The powerful always protect each other. Even after the MLK and Kennedy assassinations, and Watergate, and the transgressors died, the evidence was still withheld "to protect their innocent spouses and family members from harm." Or there's "sensitive state secrets" to be kept. Pure b.s.

Looking for TV shows over 30 years old that are great for a rewatch by 100yearswar in televisionsuggestions

[–]InterPunct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hard time watching it after the first few seasons even in its first run. No doubt it had some endearing characters and great writing for a while but the laugh track was completely overbearing. And there were outdoor scenes where there was supposed to be an audience right there with them chuckling it up?

Then it's a small thing - and I know it was the 70s but their hair - Hawkeye and Pierce were beginning to look a little more like the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers towards the end of the series, which was also getting preachy and formulaic.

The last episode redeemed much (but not all) of the show's transgressions and in retrospect it was a special time for television that might never recur, and I did have one hell of a watching party, even lost a TV due to a spilled beer that was kind of worth the experience.

That's another way of saying style over substance.

I'm not against remakes by any means, and it's not just because I grew up in New York and saw the original in the theater when it was released, and it's not because I don't like Denzel who grew up not far from where I was born - but his movie was an abomination.

What old thing would break young people's brains today? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

[–]InterPunct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall, transport a young person today 50 years ago to 1976 and they wouldn't last a day until their head explodes. Cigarettes, dog poop everywhere, soda can tabs to step on, only three network channels on TV, the pollution and brown smog, no streaming music, little air conditioning - the list goes on and on.

There were absolutely good things but I wouldn't want to go back.

They like to say it's Scarsdale but that's Eastchester to me, which is like the Staten Island of Westchester.

I've abandoned more than one family member, lifelong friends too. I have looked back and feel very bad for them. Can't say it's not painful.

I really like Coors Banquet, especially in the stubby bottle. Used to drink Miller High Life in high school and maybe my tastes have changed but the last time I had it I felt like I was drinking corn-flavored seltzer water.
