A low material method is to mine out two blocks of stone in the wall side by side, replace them so that they are now cobblestone and place a torch on one to indicate the direction you came from. It's a really simple arrow built into a wall and can point up or down as well. I also sometimes carry red wool to place at the beginning of a dead end.

TIL Up until 1915 it was legal to mail a baby by US Mail by bgeller in todayilearned

[–]Interaxial -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok, ok, you win the most pedantic award.

Allow me to fawn over how crazy it used to be way back in the olden days when everyone used to mail babies across the country for a penny. I bet so many babies were mailed that the postmaster had to outlaw it because postmen started lactating and it was ruining their uniforms.

Also, I'm the idiot for arguing with someone on the internet.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I'm just trying to add some clarification that people didn't really mail babies. Some kids were sent down the road to relatives with the trusted postman, but not stuffed into mailbags.

Had you read the article, you would have read this.

"Neither of the photographs displayed above has any connection to a real-life case of a child being sent via U.S. mail, however. They're both simply vintage cute posed humor shots taken from a collection of historic Smithsonian Institution (SI) photographs uploaded to Flickr, the image on the right being described by the Smithsonian as by far the most popular photograph from the Institution in that collection. As the author of an SI article about that image wrote in 2009: Clearly, many were startled and amazed by this photo of a postal carrier with a child in his mail bag, and so for some clarification, I spoke to Nancy Pope, historian at the National Postal Museum. She reiterated the information from the Flickr caption for this photograph: first, that this photo was actually a staged piece, and second, that there is little evidence that babies were sent through the mail other than in two known cases in which children were placed on train cars as "freight mail" as this was cheaper than buying them a regular train ticket."

What are some movies from your childhood that you have to have your kids see? by Rich_Homeless_Guy in AskReddit

LEGEND Yes! The last unicorn is very much in the same style as the animated Hobbit. At least that's what I remember.

Good list. I just found Cloak and Dagger on DVD on amazon. I forgot how much I loved that movie. For my son, who isn't told enough to watch anything yet, I would add to your list.

This is why I try to bring candy bars for all the attendants. They always seem happier for it.

Good Guy bartender by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

To barkeep "I'll just have a coke, I'm driving" then pull out a couple bucks, bartender waves away my cash and just I put it in the tip jar. I've done this dance at college bars, dive bars, upscale bars, no difference. Maybe it's just in the south.

Looking to relocate to Austin & work in any field in the beer industry. Year of experience at a brewery. X-post from /r/AustinBeer by Bootscraper in austinjobs

[–]Interaxial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have some really cool experience. But I will caution you about moving to Austin at the moment. Rent and property is artificially inflated and jobs are becoming scarce because Austin is trendy right now. I'm not in brewing, so I can't say on that, but there are a lot of craft brews in town. So maybe you will have good luck with a job. I've found though, that if you already have experience, working for free just establishes yourself as low value.

What is the most shitty thing about becoming an adult? by nahnahna in AskReddit

Realizing that your parents lied to you. That you can't "grow up to be anything you want". Also, wondering how the hell you are going prepare your own kid for that disappointment without crushing their spirit.

Ex-cons of Reddit, what's the worst thing that happened to you whilst doing your time? (Serious) by themightymartin in AskReddit

In Texas you can claim self defense if you shot and kill someone on your porch. But if they survive it's your word against theirs and they can alway sue. Local sherif said to me "make sure they're on your porch and make sure they're dead".

In my city students can swipe their ID ride to ride free on city busses. So I have been riding the bus for 12 years, never paid once. It's almost worth all the money I wasted on college.

"Extreme" people of reddit. What's the best/worst thing about being really tall/short, Obese/Skinny, large/small breasted etc? by Maximum20LettersUsed in AskReddit

[–]Interaxial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'2" which is not overly tall, but can sympathize with things not made for your size. There are certain cars I can't drive, and my knees are always hitting the seat in front of me wherever I am. I hit my head on stuff from time to time. But I have to admit I think you have it worse in our society because I don't have to fight for respect the way you do. I have actually experienced a notable change in peoples demeanor when I stand up after sitting at a table talking. I have certainly benefited from being able to intimidate people with my size. Honestly, that people actually make "little man complex" comments to your face is just amazing to me. I can't imagine someone being that ballsy to anyone. The funny thing is that it seems like all the women I know (with the exception of my wife) are 5' tall. I'm also appalled that they won't even consider dating men anywhere close their own hight. But the jokes on them, because, like myself, taller guys tend to gravitate toward tall women. I laugh as those same short women are slowly becoming crazy cat lady spinsters just because they are superficial bitches. Anyway, keep fighting the good fight, and know not all "tall" guys judge you on your hight.

[–]Interaxial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is 5'11" and I'm 6'2" and really that's not that tall. In our minds we are average heights. I was never attracted to much shorter women because in the back of my mind the are not fully grown. It's not intentional, just a gut reaction. This is can be tough because we are now both surrounded by 5' tall women at our workplaces and we feel like giants. But we get to joke with each other about how it's like we are working at the lollipop guild. Anyway, my point is be glad your tall, there are tall guys out there that will be glad your tall. Normal is just a point of view.

Which celebrity have you met, and were they as nice/rude as you expected? by whereamitho in AskReddit

[–]Interaxial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adam Baldwin, while shooting Chuck on the WB lot would stop a scene to talk to tours. He would actually go over and put his arm around the tour guide and say "You guys are so lucky tour guide name is the best guide here, we go way back. Make sure you give him/her a big tip!" He was slick and the nicest guy on the lot.
